Companies that filed for bankruptcy

There is an email being circulated that admonishes to hurry and redeem gift cards. The list I received includes Circuit City and Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but these two companies have not filed bankruptcy as yet. According to Snopes, analysts suggest Circuit City may be on the path to closing or filing bankruptcy and Blockbuster has offered to purchase, but Circuit City has not as yet filed.

The following companies have, indeed, filed for bankruptcy......

Movie Gallery (Hollywood Video) in 2007 and is closing many of the stores

Sharper Image

Linens n Things

Lillian Vernon

Ionic Breeze air purifiers

The Children's Place

Power Mate Pens

Trump Casinos (again)

P.C. Magazine

And, there are many more, including several airlines. Filing bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean a business will close their doors. Sometimes, they do it in order to protect themselves from creditors during re-organization. Levitz furniture company is on the email list, which has filed for bankriptcy several times before. I don't know if they plan to close this time though.

Thanks for that. I was about to order from a catalog, but quickly opted not to, as I got burned from The Paragon Co. going bankrupt. Lost my money on that one, now I'm very hesitant to order from catalogs.
Where is the best place to check on the situation?

There are plenty of shopping streets/neighborhoods here that going to a mall is not a necessity. Not all malls are all covered here either, particularly Century City Mall, which has a parking structure, but you walk outside to go from store to store. Third Street Promenade is all outdoors, as is Rodeo Drive. Melrose Avenue is one of my favorite shopping streets, but I also like Sunset in the Silver Lake district. Hollywood and Highland also has a large central area that is open to the sky. There's really no need to cover these areas, since we don't have cold weather, and it's usually not too hot. Lowspark, you are not a weather wimp if you can handle living in Houston in the summer! I lived there when I was going to Rice, but I never managed to stay there in the summer. Rice closed for the summer when I was there - they didn't want to subject the students (and professors and staff) to the heat and humidity. DB had been telling me that Circuit City had been late with all their payments to Sony, and so we were not surprised when we found out that they were going into chapter 11. We bought a new TV recently and ended up getting it at Best Buy because they have a brand (Insignia) that got good reviews and was well under the employee discount price that DB could get from Sony for a similar LCD widescreen TV. I gave our old widescreen TV to the neighbors, for helping us move it out of the house. It was a rear projection TV and was huge!! I'm much happier with the flat screen TV, and our old TV, even though it was HD, was not compatible with Blu-ray. DB had bought a Blu-ray player a couple of weeks ago at a company sale (at Sony) along with an AV amplifier, but we could not get a picture on our old TV with it. Finally, I broke down and bought a new 47" Insignia flat screen LCD TV, and we're much happier with that. We only have a few Blu-ray discs, but we're starting to collect them. The old DVDs are supposed to look better on Blu-ray player, but it's difficult to tell. Lars

Definitely see a credit counsellor, but first check with your local consumer protection agency (here it's through the Attorney Generals Office) to make sure they're legit. Nothing could be worse than signing up with a shady credit counsellor and finding yourself worse off than before. Don't fall for payday loans or other quick-relief schemes. And tell your friend you're handling it. My in-laws listened to a 'friend' and filed bankruptcy even though their credit was sterling. The only deal was that they couldn't make their car payment and credit card payments and still have enough to get by every month comfortably. Meaning there was no cushion. They didn't even have their cards charged up to the max, and were not behind on payments, EVER. Their total debt less than $10,000...most of that being the car loan. Some shyster got them to file bankruptcy using scare tactics and the same baloney logic you seem to be getting from your friend. Later, after it was discharged, they financed another car, but because of the bankruptcy they had a very high interest rate. Then those payments got too high for their comfort, so they traded in that car and got the balance added to the new loan (negative equity) so now they drive a car worth no more than $3000 that they owe $17,000 on and their payments were lowered only $20/mo, but spread out for 7 years. All because some one told them to file bankruptcy. How far out on your car loan are you? Can you sell it and get out from under it with any equity? Any way to unload the other party? Or at least make them start contributing? Best of luck, I feel for you!

Just for the record, Rowe filed a Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy. They will stay in business but concentrate on their upholstery core business. Selling Storehouse is part of their change in strategy.

I don't agree at all with the public beging at fault. I prefer to own American "based" brands of vehicles. My very first car was an older model Camaro, that I "financed" and paid for. My second financed vehicle was a Brand New I put the miles on it for the test drive Pontiac, at the age of 20. I kept that Pontiac for years after it was paid for, and my husband commuted in it for years more until finally at over 200K the engine needed to be done. It had weathered several bumper to bumper I5 accidents that he was caught in the middle of too.. We have a 1995 Ford Ranger that has over 300K and still runs very well. It's had timing belts changed regularly and a starter..other than that all engine bits are original. However we both drive "foreign" cars. I have a Mazda MPV. (which has had countless problems, which the extended warranty more than covered!) But now it's paid for and no warranty..so when it's done, it's "done"! And hubby drives a Jetta, that has had it's set of EXPENSIVE repairs, but again over 200K on it that he commutes in. Hubby has always wanted a "big rig" Expedition, Escalade..that type of thing.. I kept him under control and said NO FREAKIN WAY! When gas got up to $5 a gallon..I was sooooooo glad of that! I love Honda's they are reliable and a well put together machine. Hubby won't see that at all. When we need a new vehicle, the purchase will be based on our needs, not the brand name and the best deal. I'd happily buy another GM if that worked for us at the time. oh and My neighbor has a Mazada Truck that looks and sounds just like our Ford Ranger..Same Truck...just a few years newer. So I don't know which one of us has a more "foreign" truck he, or us? Probably built in the same factory, for all I know.

Foggyj, I check snopes against that email. Also did a general search and found this article. The looked up almost half of them and they all check out. Bankruptcy is public record though. You can find them with a better search than I did. I just don't know exact the site(s) without have to check every county in the country.

Thank you all for posting this information. Even the stores/catalogs that have been around for year have to be watched.
Home Depot is closing its Bismarck ND store and it is only about 3 years old along with many more. But then they are higher that most.

It is sort of nice not to feel the need to be buying much stuff.

On return trip from a cousin's funeral last month, another cousin suggested to me that it's time to winnow down my stuff, leaving less for my kids to dispose of when I'm not going to use them any more, whether due to moving into an apt., residential home, nursing home ...

.. or final departure.

Different strokes for different folks, huh?

Huh?? I'm still confused as to why posts are missing but it seems others have the same issue so I guess it's not my computer.

As I recall, Bestlawn made some additional comments. I don't see any now, do you?

Administration has an eraser ... which they use on occasion ... not getting involved with anything remotely resembling "censorship", you understand.

I've heard that Bestlawn has been banned.

She may disagree with folks from time to time, and I think that it's fair to say that sometimes I've felt her replies to be couched in less diplomatic language then I felt comfortable with, but I do believe that she could disagree without being disagreeable.

Sometimes she is (was) rather good at keeping the discussion on track and I felt at times was something of an antidote for some unusual (strange?) opinions that had been expressed.

I think that sometimes it would be well if a few participants here were to back off a bit, disengage themselves some from their opinion and not feel personally insulted when someone disagrees with them ... to develop a bit thicker skin.

I've written to admin to ask that her ban be lifted.

Far be it from me to have the temerity to second-guess admin ...

... however ...

... could be they figured that the topic here is worthwhile.

But, if they have banned bestlawn, as has been suggested, it may have been some of the fussing that took place later between a few posters that had them take the eraser to some of the "offerings".

Otherwise ...

... maybe the gremlins were responsible for those problematic erasures?

I guess some folks who figured when they saw the number of posts offered at this restaurant that they were in for a full-course meal ...

... were seriously disappointed when they found that there was little here but horse de oeuvres (hors d'oeuvres?).

That's about all that I can offer as potential reasons on the subject.
