Wiring wrong on IntelliPro to EasyTouch (and maybe heater too)

After fixing a collapsed pipe (separate thread), I started the system and began to consider different pump speeds for the various running modes (spa, pool, heater).

Without getting into all the details, the easy touch allows the 4 different speeds to be assigned to the various modes. Each of the 4 speed presets can be programmed with speeds between 300 and 3450 RPMs.

Well changing the speeds on the easytouch was not changing the speed of the motor and when I looked at the manuals to trouble shoot, I noticed that when you're using an Intellipro with an external controller, the 240 V power is supposed to be wired direct to the pump from the breaker without going through a relay.

But that's not how the electrician wired it. He wired the pump to the Filter pump relay.

OK, I can fix that but then I noticed that the MaxE gas heater IS wired directly to the 240 breaker. Did he just mix these up or is the Heater also supposed to be wired direct to the power circuit (not through a relay). The instructions for the MaxE are silent on this. It only says to make sure any breaker that can turn the pump off must also turn off the heater. In my case, they are both wired to the same breaker.

Please let me know what you know about the power wiring for the MaxE heater and IntelliPro.

Thats fine. The heater controls from the Easy Touch will tell it when to fire. The power should be direct to the pump and may be to the heater. If the power to the heater is from a relay, the relay may be programmed when to turn on automatically or used manually.

For example, lets say you want the pool to heat for weekend use only. Setting time on/off days and hours is now an option.

The pump relay is unused with this pump. There is also a 4 wire control cable that came with the pump to connect to the Easy Touch. That is how the speeds will told when and what RPMs are to be used.

Thanks Scott. The simple fix is just to swap the heater wires with the pump wires on the relay so that the pump is directly connected and the heater is under relay control. But I can move them both off the relay. It's not that hard.

The 4 wire control cable is there but I'm thinking the pump speed has been working in manual mode for the last year and a half and not being controlled by the easytouch.

See photo below (I go a bit overboard with these photos but it helps me when others provide them in their posts so maybe it will help others in the future).

The 240V lines from the breaker are the 2 lighter blue wires. The red wires got to the heater direct from the 240V line (pre-relay). The yellow wires go to the IntelliPro pump (post relay but not for long). The blue and brown wires go to the EMI filter for the Intelchlor transformer (post relay).

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. i bought a couple of these on ebay to use in my walk in terrarium and they work wonderfully. one is for reg heat and other is for backup.

I'll tell you one thing about me though. I'm not someone thats going to sugar coat anything, if I think someone has no business inside their system I won't think twice of voicing my opinin. Maybe you're an overly sensitive and extremely naive little individual tlewis. Perhaps you should go over this entire thread again. It seems to me this guy is having a problem with his gas heating system. Incidentally he himself said he smelled gas! So he thinks he could go on the internet, type in a question or two and "glory be" his problem it solved! But its possible he could kill himself trying. Its been days now and this guy is still monkeying around. How do you know at this point if this system isn't totally scrwed up. Is the internet anyplace to learn about gas furnaces? NOT! "Gee, I wonder where this loose wire gets connected to!!!" I suppose your going to explain to this guy how to check all the safetys in his system too. If you're in this trade tlewis I hope you don't work this way with your customers. I don't know about you but when I work on a system, even if it was something simple, I go through that entire system. I check every safety, every wire, every sta-con, "everything" If I remove a wire nut I always cut back and strip insulation this way I know I have a nice new clean tight connection. Maybe in your mind I'm not a people person but I'm one hell of a conscientious technician who customers and less expereienced techs ask for. I also think I'm a pretty good judge of people and know when somebody should bail out. I hope someday being a little goody two shoes doesn't end up biting you right on the keester! Its a crazy world out there!

Ladyvixen, we were in our 30's in 1985 when we bought our 1898 house. Looking back, we were very young. Neither my husband nor I had any skills or knowledge at all about how to work on houses. All we knew was that our house was nearly intact, was very inexpensive, and that we loved it. I had always wanted an old house, and had been buying things such as light fixtures, hardware, etc., for years before we bought the house. We bought the house "as is". Fortunately we were both employed and had no children. We had to hire almost everything done, and it needed a lot of work. We did not take a vacation for years. Then came a time of around a year or two that my husband was either unemployed or underemployed. During that time, the house just didn't get worked on. We didn't care that we lived in an unfinished house; in fact, I thought it was beautiful from day one. We have a corner in the dining room where all the little balls the cats play with end up, but you don't notice the slope otherwise. It has taken us over 25 years, and we are almost finished, but still have some work to do. We should have it finished by now, but are in our 60's now and do like to take a vacation now and then. Also we sometimes didn't have work done even when we had the money, because we were tired of the mess of having things torn up. We lived with a practically non-existent kitchen until about 2004. I said all along that this house was my dream house. People would look at me funny, but it was and still is my dream house. Don't let others talk you out of your dream. Make the decision based on what you want and what you think you can handle. If you think you can live with an unfinished house for years, go for it. If you have to have everything finished and perfect, you shouldn't buy an old house. I have the ablility to not even see the unfinished stuff until we get ready to do something about it. I meant this to be an encouragement to you, but reading back on it, maybe this will scare you because it has taken us so long. Don't let that scare you--you can do it faster than we did! Update-My home warranty company has dispatched it to a new plumbing company. Since I am technically partially disputing the first plumber’s findings (that it was caused by an electrical surge) a different plumber has to take a look and see if he agrees with the first plumber or if he says it needs to be replaced but not because of an electrical surge. I currently have the power off to the unit because I don’t want it to overheat and deal with whatever happens when that happens. My question is what do I do now? If I leave the breaker flipped off the plumber will report that the breaker was flipped so that is why it’s not working. It will start to heat up after he flips it back on and he’ll say it is fixed. I called the new plumbing company and have an appointment scheduled for Tuesday 7am-noon. I gave them the history of what is happening and they said the tech will call me 30 minutes before he gets to my place and that I should turn the breaker on then. It started the wind “shhhhh” sound at 1:30 am this morning, 12 hours after the electrician left. If I turn the breaker on 30 minutes before the plumber gets here he’ll likely see that there is hot water so it’s technically working but I have no idea if it will be shhhing/overheating by then. I did video the sound I heard this morning. In the video you can hear it (it was louder in person) and it shows that I flipped the breaker and the sound stops. I can't upload that here though. I’ve also asked the electrician for his report showing that there wasn’t an electrical surge. Any ideas? The lowest quote I've got so far was the $1,700. The company that came out through Home Depot said that to give me quote he would need someone to come out and cut the drywall to see how much of a leaking pipe needs to be replaced. The other plumber that gave me a quote was $2,300+. I'll keep looking for estimates and try Lowes. The back and forth is very frustrating. However I'm currently working from home. Welcoming them and repeating the situation to the next person is starting to feel like a routine.

I swapped the wires and it all seems to be working as designed.

The pump now responds correctly to the speed settings I programmed into the easytouch. Pool mode is set to preset 1 at 2250 RPM. The heater is on Preset 2 at 2650 RPM and the Spa is on preset 3 at 3150 RPM. Preset 4 is currently unused.

Scott, thanks for confirming my suspicion on the wiring and for responding so quickly on the 4th of July holiday.

I am wiring up my easytouch 4 system now and the manual sucks.

I take it the relay wires from GFI breaker and then to the connection you want to control via easy touch. i.e. lights, etc.

Do the actuators take up a relay?

For example on Relay # 2 what is that controlling and do the second set of White and Blue wire go to the breaker.

i.e. Wires In from breaker (white/blue) then to 120V intellibrite Pool lights via relay (white /blue).

I will NOT wire the pump to the relay and use the intellipro serial cable.

Does this mean the #1 Pump relay is always empty? Does the easytouch use this in any way or does the serial cable connect to this via the circuit board.
