Every kitchen will date at some point. What makes a kitchen last is the personality you put in it for you. If you love dark go dark. The best decisions are made when you listen to your gut.

I agree with SunnyAlberta (I'm in Alberta too, so "Hi, neighbor!" ) I think all things at some point will be dated. I have seen espresso cabinets in showhomes and furniture since at least as early as 2003. I wanted them so badly when we built in 2005 but the cabinet company our builder used did not have them, so in our last build I had to have espresso even though they might be dated at some point.

They say most trends in decorating last 10 years but since the general population has only really putting them in the last 5 or so years I think we are safe for a while. Espresso with the trend of glass tile might say 2012 but if you don't combine too many 2012 trends it might not date your kitchen too much. My opinion is do what you like and enjoy if you plan on staying a while. :)

I would say that's an obvious, given the way we can see Oak, or the blonde Scandinavian stuff of the 80s (which we can date because that was its era) as in a time period.

It will be decidedly too dark and gloomy, and someone will espouse the virtue of a light maple or something. Even the Shaker style that's everywhere, so clean and classic, will be dated.

I, too, love the dark woods. Always have, even before they were the trend. (Never liked light things>) If I could have afforded it, I'd also have these beautiful cabinets. But I can't, so they're in my MBR.

Well, It's the nature of decor.
So do what you love and just enjoy it!

I truly believe that you do what looks great in your space. I tried for a transitional kitchen but in the end our house has lots of dark wood, beige/brown tones, beige tile throughout(the previous owner added and not in budget to rip out all 1800 sq ft:( the trend around my area is definitely beachy white kitchens but that would not work in our home nor did the transitional style I envisioned with glass tile backsplash- just looked odd. Instead I put in some modern style touches with the hardware, countertop edge detail and went more traditional with hand glazed ceramic tile back splash and granite countertops. I stuck with plain style cabs in the 2012 famous shaker style in a warm cinnamon rather than the usual white seen around here. And it fits because it fits our home, not some ideal of what is classic or timeless. I hope I am making sense:)

I think it can also help when you consider the age of your house (though this is a generality). If you have a hundred-year-old house and choose to make your kitchen look "period appropriate" it will never go out of style the way a modern kitchen in an old house would, and vice-versa.
