Furniture placement..help!

Here is a scan of our great room plan of the home we just built. Nevermind all the writing and marks on it. The rooms are labled. The livingroom is about 16X16 square from the patio door to the left (not including the patio door). The green rectangles are where our furniture is currently. The red square is the 12X12 area rug (we have duraceramic floors). I still need to find a chair (or 2?) The purple rectangles is the area I'm currently working on filling in...I'm thinking a padded bench or console table (with an ottoman or 2 underneath for extra seating/storage). Or even a credenza? I don't have (or like) alot of knick knack type stuff so a glass curio cabinet wouldn't work.

Our sofa and loveseat is reclining (wall recline, so they don't lean back real far). I'd rather not have reclining furniture because it is an arranging nightmare for me, but husband insists due to a bad back. I'd really like something behind the couch if possible because there is just so much space between there and the dining/kitchen (7-9 feet of open space)...plus I'd like to not see the back of the entire sofa.

What do you suggest I put behind the couch and along the wall of the hallway? Theres about 8 feet to work with along that hallway wall...so something about 4 feet wide and no real deep would probably work.

Another option I've considered is putting the tv (it's a 60" sitting on a fireplace/media cabinet) along that short wall on the bottom, loveseat on the left wall, sofa in front of window and future chair(s) on the side where the sofa currently is. So my problem there is, if I put something behind the couch now, where will I put it if I switch to my other idea for arrangement?

I totally suck at decorating! We've been here for 10 months and I have nothing on the walls in the LR or dining yet!

So...just wondering what would look good, or if a console table, credenza, or bench would look good or bad in either of those spots, or if any of you have arrangement ideas. I'd like to keep the sofa and loveseat ON the rug so they don't slide around so much on the hard floor. I really wish I had planned out furniture placement more on the floor plan before we built. Thanks in advance for your help!

Perhaps you might consider a decorative folding screen to screen the back of the couch, if itÃ¢ÂÂs left where it is now. One that is suitable for your decor.

Hi, What direction is the lr window facing and the deck on? Do you have a nice view to look at out the window? Do you need to have the window treatment closed for privacy or sun??
Is there a fireplace with the media cabinet? Is the furniture drawn to scale?
I think I'd move the area rug further down, and possibly put it on an angle. I see this as kind of like a family room, correct? Could you add a round game table and 4 chairs on the lower end? Would that be the room you would possibly go to make puzzles, play cards, etc.?? It would be helpful to see some pics of what your furniture looks like, wall height, etc.
Do you need storage for games, books, etc? Do you have a foyer closet? I think a lot depends on your decorating style too. Do you like antiques? over-stuffed furniture? Would book cases or an armoire that is a rather stately looking piece be something that could be added for storage and interest?
Sorry about all the questions, but hard to know what to suggest.

Congratulations on the new home! When deciding on a room arrangement, consider both the space and how you live. Unless you want reclining chairs, sofa facing the fireplace, then the fireplace is too high for a tv. So, then it should go on the other wall. What type of furniture? The most flexible type is a sofa and 2 chairs. Why? -can be rearranged in several ways -can be used to lie down on -guests prefer their own seats, so you have a total of 4 seats if no one uses the middle of the sofa Maybe you rarely have guests. Fine......then is there is reason you want a sectional with a chaise? You may have a good reason. It will work....just make sure there is a reason you want it. A chaise on the end of a sofa makes for an awkward furniture arrangement. If you are talking about a sectional with a chaise........that gets into what I call a "trap" (hard to get in and out of and forget a coffee table). So, get what works for you.

Where it says terrace, are those doors or windows? If they are doors, you'll have to consider traffic flow going in and out of that area. How many people usually sit in this space? Will you be having a tv? Is your terrace the focal point? Focal point can be a beautiful view, a fireplace, or a piece of wall art. Do you have a picture of this space? Pictures would help a lot to visualize the space and get a much better idea of how to decorate it. Thanks!

Your title says "bi level". Is there a change in floor level behind the sofa? You obviously have two separate areas to decorate, so maybe that is what you meant. I can give you my opinions, but you really should make a floor plan for these areas. Start in one corner and measure the length of a wall. Note how far a door is from that corner. Write down these measurements, with notations, such as Point A to B = east wall = 16' 3" and east wall closet door 8' 5" from point A. When you have measured all the walls and doors draw the walls on 1/4-inch graph paper (aka quadrille paper) which you can print from HERE. Your room is larger than an 8.5 x 11 page will hold, so print out more pages, then trim one edge and tape two or more pages together. Draw the floorplan so that 1 foot equals 4 squares on the paper. Each square will represent 3". Door placement doesn't have to be exact, but note which way the door swings, so it isn't blocked by furniture. Next, measure whatever furniture you intend to keep. How long and how deep is the piece? Most sofas are around 7' long by 3' deep, but there are variations. Take a tape measure with you when shopping. Furniture always looks small in an expansive showrooms. Make sure it will fit before you buy. After you have measured the furniture draw the outlines of each piece on another page of graph paper to the same 1' equals 4 sqares. Label each and cut it out. Now you can move the furniture about on the floorplan until you find the best position. Make sure you will have room to walk around the furniture. Try for a 42" pathway. I'm thinking you should leave a path on the left side of the TV area so it's easy to get to the bathroom from the fireplace area. I personally do not like sectionals, preferring a single sofa with 2 or more chairs that can be angled toward the TV or towards people for conversation. If, however, this room will primarily be for TV viewing a sectional could be better. Here is a Houzz ARTICLE on sectionals. The fireplace area is small and should be made cozy, IMO. A couple of chairs with ottoman and a table between. Perhaps a loveseat or divan under the windows. Maybe you like sitting in front of the fire, so how you place the furniture depends on how you will use the space. Once again, use the floor plan to see how furniture fits.

I would put TV on the short wall by the FP so both could be enjoyed as a focal point. The TV gear can be stashed in the closet behind it. Float a 3-seat sofa perpendicular to the balcony sliders with two swivel chairs opposite it; all of them around a coffee table. Place a drop leaf dining table against the "south" wall. Only one leaf needs to be up for the two of your, and it can be pulled away from the wall and opened for guests. If you only entertain a few times a year, consider renting extra chairs for those occasions. If you do dinner parties more frequently, two chairs can slip under the two ends of the table and two could flank it on either end. A third pair could go in the second bedroom until needed. Mixing and matching chairs can be interesting, and pulling them from other rooms works too.

It looks like there is quite a bit of space. I'd want to center the conversational cluster on the tv wall, so the arrangement can move down. That way there would be more room to get out the french doors. I also would think about putting the love seat on the other side of the sofa, facing out the windows rather than the wall/hall area. Then maybe one chair with a side table in the corner of the room kitty corner with the corner by the window facing the sofa and loveseat to complete the conversational cluster, but not block the TV.

Typically one puts a console or sofa table behind the sofa with lamps on it for lighting. But you could put a buffet type thing for extra storage.

A lot really depends on what you use the room for and how do you want it to function...is it primarily tv viewing? a play room? conversation? That should drive the contents of the room.
