Horizontal versus diagonal backsplash

I have on order maple cabinets with a "hazelnut" glaze, Emerald Pearl granite countertops (similar to Uba Tuba), SS appliances, and red oak flooring for my new kitchen-to-be in April. I have NO experience with tile, and wanted something that would look good with my other choices, yet not be dated in a few years. So far, I've picked out 4x4 squares of Jerusalem gold marble (a neutral) with a matching listello piece going around the area. I've looked at all the Finished Backsplash photos, and many tile company web pages, and can't decide between the squares running on a horizontal line of diagonal. Which is more "timeless"/less of a fad? Any opinions would be appreciated since I've never had tile in my kitchens. Also, my husband is a native New Yorker who said "no" to subway tile "in a kitchen". (LOL) Thanks
