For someone going into the military

What do you bring to their going away party? Our friends are having a send-off party for their son who's going into the military. Do we give him something? Does Hallmark make cards for this? Is a card enough?

Prepaid phone cards are a great gift for military personnel and easy to slip into a card that wishes them well in their new career.

Well.....if this person is headed to boot camp, there are not too many things they need to bring with them. I too like the idea of a prepaid phone card but they won't be able to use it in boot camp!! It may be better to get them a gift card to somewhere they shop on a regular basis.....it's a tough call.

Today's military personnel have so many ways to stay in touch while deployed. When my son was in Iraq, I chatted with him almost every day via Skype. I sent him care packages once a month but I think you really need to know the person in order for that to be effective.

Having served in the military and having been deployed outside the country, the best thing you can give someone is continued correspondence after they leave home. It doesn't hve to be a long, drawn out missive of what's happening at home but dropping a card in the mail from time to time is nice. While it may sound old fashioned, mail call still has that "what did I get?" reaction that really means a lot.

If you want one big batch at once for canning, use a determinate tomato because they're bred to .........uhm.......come on all at once. Tigerellas are indeterminate and that means they continue to grow all season and will produce a smaller fruit set but over a larger period of time. That's sort of like bush beans compared to pole beans. Bush beans produce heavy for a short time period and stop, pole beans produce less prolifically, but all season. I want slicing tomatoes and canning tomatoes so plant both rutgers and marglobe (similar taste and size) but one is determinate and one indeterminate. I am in the process of pulling my vines now, after harvesting over 350 pounds of them with probably another hundred pounds to come.

I emailed the seller just out of curiosity to ask about length and cushion fill, if it's down or down wrap. She says...."it is about 7.5 feet by 3 feet not sure about the cushion filled. could be down since feathers poke upl someone is coming at 8 pm. if you want it, you'll have to come before her." If I was that 8pm person and someone bought the sofa out from under me I'd be ticked. Seller should have told me she'd get back to me if the 8pm person didn't buy it.

Can someone please tell me what is going on in my basement?

We had a bad flood in our basement after a big rain fall. There was over 6 inches of water and our brand new floating floor had to be removed. We still don't understand what happened. We had someone come for an inspection and said it was groundwater. However, I took this video of the sewage drain pipe when there was another bad rainfall. Why does the water seem to moving into the house? I also have attached photos of where water seems to be coming up from cracks in the basement floor? We have been here for 2 years and never had a problem with flooding. We think it might have to do the excavation when replacing the main water valve from our house to the street. Any ideas of how the sewer access pipe and ground water flooding might be related? What should we do to prevent this in the future? Is a plumber the right person to call? Thank you.

@1929Spanish You could drive up and get them, only about 800 miles round trip. If your car gets at least 25 mpg, you would only spend about $100 in gas (and 13 hours of drive time). Of course, finding open bathrooms along the way might prove problematic.

a home made gift card for a letter each week?

I sent my daughter a letter a week. It was recommended not to do more than that.

Later, when she was at GITMO, she got a daily letter.

Yes, it was hard to write something every day. But boosting her morale was important to me.

Later I found out, just how much those letter meant to her.

That is the same question we faced a few months ago.
We got gift cards and money he can use when he comes home next week after finishing boot camp, he is a Marine.
Thanks for the info aabout a card or letter a week Moni.. when he leaves here after his week home I am going to really make an effort to do just that. I always send extra stamps along with everything I do mail him.
