Help! What color to stain white oak floors?
Comments (5)We have quartersawn white oak floors that have no stain and just an aluminum oxide finish for protection...they were pre-finished in a very matte finish we specified to be put on at the mill. The quarter sawing changes the appearance of the grain so they may look a little different from yours unless yours are also quartersawn? We love the color and though they do scratch a little (we have two VERY active larger dogs, a Border Collie and and English Shepherd)the lighter color hides the scratches so far and doesn't show a lot of dirt. Night shot with flash Daylight with no flash Good luck! Kat :)...See Morewhite oak floor stain in light brown/grey color?
Comments (2)Get an extra piece of your floor to try out the stain. You may need to layer a grey stain over a brown stain to get close to that look....See MoreWhat Color Should I Stain My White Oak Floors?
Comments (3)I second the thought of using a stain 3 steps lighter than the island. Because you have an orange/brown wood already in the space (the island) you already have your floor colour dictated to you. Just as an aside, White Oak rarely has 'pink' in it. When it is raw it has more of a greenish tinge to it. Red Oak is more commonly associated with pink tones (and lilac...and peach and salmon). Many people find out LATER that their purchase simply says "Oak" which allows the retailer to use Red Oak...because it has 'oak' in the title. Please check your purchase receipt to ensure it says White Oak. The type of oak you have on your floor will dictate the stain colour as well as the FINISH. Remember: an oil based finish will naturally turn orange. Which will be a nice match to the orange/brown island....See Morewhite oak and red oak floor next to each other stain help
Comments (5)I don't think you will be able to get that light look consistently with red and white oak. You probably need to go with a medium neutral stain on all floors, one that has green tones in it. Green is the complement to red/pink, and mixing complementary colors neutralizes them. I've had success with Special Walnut stain throughout my home. The floors in the original (1920s) part of the home are oak, not sure if red or white. The new white oak floors in the kitchen were installed in 2014; all are stained special walnut. Here is a photo of the transition area between dining room (above the saddle) and kitchen (below the saddle). The color is not too dark and not too light. Depending on the light it can look warmer or cooler. It's my "go-to" color for me and my clients for many years....See Morebreezygirl
