Ever have one of those days ...

Today was another gray, rainy, cold, icky day. Went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned this morning, DH got his braces off (sigh, I have another year). Came home and ate my low residue, bland, little lunch. Decided to load the twin quilt on the frame and get started. So I did. Changed the thread, sewed a sample, it looked good, so I got started quilting. Nice big loopy curves and curly ques. Power went off, on, off, on, off, and on again. Finished the first pass (about 1/6 of the quilt), advanced the quilt in the frame, and there it was. A nice tight bobbin thread and loopy top thread on the back. Well, poop. OK, big sigh, take a break, fix dinner, clean up. Start frog stitching. I got about half of it out when Biggest Loser came on, so stopped for the evening. Gotta work tomorrow, so won't have any time to work on it. Thursday I'll finish the frog stitching, work on the tension, and start over.

I hate when that happens! I had the same problem with my last quilt. It was a small wall hanging for a friend's 50th anniversary. I rethreaded the machine, cleaned the bobbin area, put in a new bobbin, and tightened the top tension. Perfect stitches!

What a bummer! My DS 15yo is totally bewildered by piecing/quilting as a hobby in the first place, but he really tries to be gracious. I was wailing about having to undo a row, and he smiled brightly and patted me on the top of the head and said "Well...it's just more quilting fun!" Like if I was insane enough to do it once, I'd probably be comforted by thinking I got to do it again! It did kinda put it in perspective for me, and now when I have redo a piece and rematch those pesky points, I snort to myself and think "More quilting fun."

Suzy, how do the tender plants survive shipping...are heat packs used? No, Jo. We more northerly growers refuse to hang up the shingle and keep on keeping on. The tender plants come in on every imaginable means. Sometimes, if it's a large order, the grower brings them on their own heated truck. I even have one of those rescheduled, because the high that day was still below freezing, and the goods expensive. They come overnight on the familiar shippers, they are picked up at airports, they even sometimes come courier. And today, we went and got THEM! The bigger wholesale growers are pretty adept at shipping them between the worst of the weather fronts and put them in what they call winter pack boxes, it's like a box, within a box, within a box. Expensive way to move perishables, but still cheaper than frozen plants. The small liners (rooted cuttings) and plugs don't seem expensive until you look at a bench of the packs and realise there is a couple thousand dollars sitting in a few square feet. Michelle, I cracked up at your description of winter madness. I have worked in those facilities and sometimes I wondered if the staff were as grounded as the clients at times. It's all relative, I guess. My cabin fever is late coming on. It usually hits in January and by this time of February I'm in spring mode, even if the weather isn't cooperating. I think I did myself an injustice by biding through January without going a little mad. I feel like a big zit about to pop when I need to be the most functional. The sun did come out for about an hour before it set. The ice was falling off the trees in big chunks. The whole d*mned property is a hard hat zone.

I have a lot of days that are sort of like that. Makes you wish you had stayed in bed. I thought I broke my foot. Go to the emergency room and find out the doctor thinks I may have chipped it. Says I have to go to an orthopedic specialist. Great. I have no insurance. No problem, they will refer me to UTMB and can get it done at a reduced rate. Evidently regular old doctors don't put casts on any more...everything has to be a specialist. She gives me my x rays...faxes the referral. Tells me to call them first. I call. They say they will get back to me in 10 to 15 business days. I look at x rays...can't see a break. I see where she noted my little toe. That isn't even where the pain is. Was told to put no weight on it...sent me home with crutches. They did give me a boot. Made me promise to follow thru with going to UTMB. Decide, screw it! Throw away crutches. Wear boot...and walk on it. Doing much better. Swelling has gone down. Then today one of the horses knocked me down and I hit the back of my head on the driveway. Have a goose egg. No point in going to the doctor...UTMB would get to me in 10 to 15 business days. Anyway, I'm okay. I think I will live.

Aw, geez! My grandmother would say I was wishing my life away. Sorry about the wrong day! At this time of year, who the heck knows what day it is--okay, Georgysmom does. ;-) Glenda, breakfast always sounds so good to me--except in the morning. Especially pancakes. Georgysmom, is your son home yet? Your dinner sounds warm and delicious, as usual. Woodsy, you sound like me some days (those are the days we have breakfast for dinner). Azzalea, I just have to try making something with leeks. That sounds like a dinner Harry would love. Shirley, that sounds good to me--especially the little clean up part. I thought about fried potatoes but decided we didn't need the carbs. Harry's down to 191 and just can't seem to get to that 189 mark. He isn't really trying, but when we moved here he weighed about 250. Sadly, he just doesn't eat that much any more due to his health.

Hang in there Beverly. It happens to the best (& worst) of us. You'll get into the habit of running your hand underneath after the first 12" or so after starting...at least that's what I do.

That is what is so troublesome, Jennifer. I quilted a "test" on the side before starting, and it was fine. Oh well. Live and Learn. I don't think a 3 year old will complain about a few extra holes in his quilt.

Grrrrr. The quilt gremlins were visitng you. You did the only thing possible to combat this situation--put it down, step away and reapproach.

Beverly, Santa can bring your quilter to my house....I got a snow filled driveway for the sleigh. I'll keep the light on~LOL~LOL (Make sure he brings all the manuals, please)

Yesterday was sort of a bummer for me too. I sewed half of my 12 blocks wrong and I had them pressed and matched. I have no clue what I did to them.
I agree you did the best thing possible, step away. Today I will start the rip process.
Very annoying!
