Need creative idea for back of peninsula

I've attached a photo but bear with me while I explain. We will have a large peninsula separating the dining/living room from the kitchen. The view your looking at is from the dining/living room. Here is our issue. We found a slab of Quartzite we LOVE. Drove 2 hours to go look at it and thought all was well. Well...when they pulled it out for final check it is 3 inches short of what we need for it to dive into the wall like we wanted. So we do one of a few things:
Float the wall out 3 inches
Add a floor to ceiling wine rack at the end (that would use up about 10 inches)
add a seam in the corner and not worry about it (uck)
Other thoughts or ideas?

Here is the kitchen layout-the yellow is where Quartzite will be.

Good thing you caught it now! I would as you described float the wall out 3". I don't think you'll notice it. I don't think you want to give up 10" to a wine rack if you really need 5 seats at the counter.

It's almost like Christmas morning!! I woke up to a many more gifts! Thank you. Karin, thank you for the insight. I absolutely love the idea of an armoire. It would be beautiful, but I do not think practical. I am in those files many, many times each day. The ones to the right of my desk are customer files, the rolling files on the floor hold a few more customer files plus other info I need access to. Patty and Mary, the bookcase idea sounds like a possible as well. Les, you have given me even something more to think about. Several others mentioned this as well -- purpose of this room. As I said, this is a center hall colonial. 20 years ago we added 5' to our family room and added a large sunroom on the back of that. Since that time (and even before that) the living room has just been for show, not function. Several years ago my sons suggested moving my office from the basement, where dry as it was, it was still a basement. I was so very reluctant, because after all I was going to disparage the living room. So I put the desk and files in and bought the screen. While a very large room, shoving everything down just made it worse, because now I had just moved the living room over to make room for the office. I recently got rid of the sofa and two tables. That was great. I had my family room furniture delivered and they would take away any used furniture for free and donate to a furniture bank. I had the sofa and a chair (37 years old). One of the men said he knew someone who could use it and asked if that was okay with me. It felt good because I knew it was going to be put to use. It was in perfect condition - I just didn't want it anymore. Anyway, this has all made me realize that this room is primarily an office and I should embrace that - I am going to start by moving things around. Thank you, Les. I do love the bookcase divider idea as well. I have been thinking of moving the desk anyway, as it is starting to "alligator" in the sun. My father brought this home from work many years ago and refinished it. I can still see his hands on it, so want to preserve it. Les, if you are still out there, --- you mentioned a loveseat to the left as you walk in the room. You cannot see well from the pictures, but there is a very large window there. I don't think I would want a large piece against the window. Thanks again to all who helped me. Now, I just need to break the news to my dear, dear husband that I have yet another "plan".

Yes, the porch walk in door there is 80” tall and the overhead garage doors are 96” tall. I have read too about the egress windows and that is definitely what I want to stay with, just trying to figure out how to get the roof lines tied together and still save the window height.

Y's post really gets at the heart of what should be your design and decision making process. Start with what your needs are for the space. If you're not sure, think about it a bit while you are out there, imagine how you might use the space and how you might like it to look or make you feel. Then you can begin to see where the problem issues are that could be improved. The next step is dealing with the realities of the way your home sits on the land. Drainage issues, the planting zone you are in, the way the light moves across your yard, views, what your neighbors are doing, etc. You have to work with them for a successful landscape. There are a lot of options for shapes and materials and colors, but they all have to function, and drainage, for example as you have seen, is a basic functional issue that must take front and center. If you're not sure what you want from your deck, perusing Houzz photos or other photos online or in landscaping books or magazines is a great way to get some ideas. For example, in my own backyard deck redo at my last house, I had three goals--privacy first, and then nice views, and lastly plants I could interact with, either edible or smell or the "look" I wanted which was memories of my northwoods homeland (I lived in urban PA). The physical parameters were that my lot was tiny, tiny, tiny surrounded by neighbors close up since it was a row house, and it had southern exposure and was hot as hades in the summer. Also some pests of rabbits, feral cats, squirrels, mice and chipmunks. And the ever present drainage issues which in my case were fairly easy to solve. Later on, my oasis of landscape attracted birds I never would have imagined seeing in such an urban setting. That was an unexpected plus. I didn't do it all at once, and as the yard progressed, my ideas and needs changed, but I did have an overall idea of where I was headed based on my goals. Once my patio became a place I LIKED to visit, I added other goals such as outdoor dining, grilling, a small campfire area, entertaining, and just sitting on the swing with my new honey who is now my husband. Oh, and I had to make room for a pleasant looking compost bin, which my then boyfriend/now husband designed. It's how he won my heart!

I would eliminate the back corner where you have the stool. Nobody is going to want to sit there anyways as you are facing the wall. Does that get you the size you need?

I would put a full height cabinet in that corner and put table linen, extra stuff for the dining and a wine racking you want one.

I vote with lyfia. Do I see the run is 124.5" long total to the wall? I would do a ~24" built in to eliminate the wall jog as no one will want to sit facing the wall. This will leave you about 100" of elbow room split between four people, 25" each, which should be ok for island seating. I realize 5 with a person on the end might be a little tight...

Yes that run is 124 1/2, it is a great room though and we plan on swivel stools so people will potentially sit facing the living room there...oh so many choices what to do . Do you really think 100 inches is enough for 4 stools? If we do a cabinet what do we do with the side facing down the length of the peninsula?

I have an issue where the end of my island has two columns. I was trying to figure out whether the granite should go between the two columns at the end. Ultimately I decided to have a little elevated (above the counter) shelf at the end (not covered in granite). Below the little shelf would be attractive outlets for using laptops and devices. IME, the wall end of a peninsula is where people end up sitting with their laptops, and it's nice to have handy plugs that you don't have to root around in dark places to find.

Adorne outlets are pretty beautiful. For example:

Make the little shelf look intentional, for example a picture ledge

Or don't change your plans just because the slab is too small. Have them find you another slab.

Caramahaston:

If your fabricator has access to a CNC machine or a Seam Phantom, you could add 3" to the slab. With a top polish the seam wouldn't be felt and would be highly inconspicuous, especially at the end of a peninsula.

Trebuchet, would a three-inch seam at the end be vulnerable to breakage? Or only if it is on an overhang?

Sorry, I forgot to sift through and remind myself whether this would overhang or be up against a wall.

I love feisty's idea. Outlets for phones/laptops are vital on a peninsula or island. Or, if you are open to a built-in, here's an idea from Pinterest.
