Diving board? What length?

We are putting in a diving board. Am I totally crazy? That was the only feature our children wanted to pool to have, so we gave in. Also, I haven't a clue as to what length we should have. They are telling me an 8' board, but that seems too long? Anybody have any ideas?

Hi again - this is one feature we were ALL looking forward to! Ours is the six-footer and it is just right. Who is "they" that are telling you need an 8-footer? Somebody here may have one, but I've only seen those in public swimming pools.

Just make sure that the board you choose will fit the pool. Having an installation guide that shows the various diving envelopes is helpful. There are guidelines for minimum depths and widths at various areas of the pool. SR Smith, who makes diving boards, may have the info available on their website. You might also check with whoever you are buyer the board from. They should also be able to provide the appropriate info for a safe installation from dig to water.Good luck.

Ours is a rock. They delivered 3 before we found the one we wanted. My husband finally went to the "rock" store and picked it out himself. They used a backhoe to set it into place. They put it in before the coping so I'm not sure how labor intensive it would be to do it later. The kids LOVE it! Best of luck finding a solution.

tell ya what, Im not supposed to have a well where I live either. I had one dug in a stealthy manner, and have the pump in my shed in the back yard, I pay for township water $25 a month or so for house, and water my yard like a madman. If I was on woodlands water, I would be paying $120 a month easy for my water I use. Its a big no no, but I dont care, when I move Ill pull the pump, cap the top and noone will ever know. =)

Ditto Ditto, Minimum of 7'6" with a 6' board, and your break starting at 9'6" out. Agin that is minimum, most pool builders build way outside of the minimums for safety. If anyone gets hurt diving in your pool the lawyers will have a field day.

There are no safe options when there are kids involved. Just put a crash helmet on them soon as they can walk :-) I saw a friend's twelve-year-old kid at the community pool do a diagonal jump of the side of the pool and promptly hit the other side and need stitches. My kids never get hurt doing "high risk" stuff. It's always dumb stuff that you would not think of, but then again I have three boys (8,10.12) One tripped over the dog and broke his elbow last year. The other tripped in the bathroom getting off the toilet and cut his forehead on the counter top - five stitches. One fell off the couch and broke his collar bone and we ended up getting CAT Scans in case of a spinal injury since he could not move his head. The list goes on . . . And the funny thing is they ski and skateboard and never one E.R. visit for those activities. golfgeek wrote: Kids seem to find the darnedest ways to make any safe product unsafe. I thought you only did an 8' diving board to accomodate the extra length need to get over an auto cover. 6' should be all you need, 8' I think would be over kill.

imny-I asked my girlfriend what length her board is, and she too has an 8' diving board. I think if we can get by with a 6' I would prfer that. I agree, 8' does seem like overkill. I wonder if there is any reason why I couldn't go with a shorter board?

Longer board = more spring = longer diving depth area in pool. You build the pool to suit the diving board. A pool not built to diving board specs as noted in an earlier post cannot have a board added.
Many people mistakenly believe that any pool with an 8' deep end is a diving pool. The depth is only part of the equation.
