Wanted to show-off my deck project

Hello all.......just completed my diy deck project, only have a couple odds and ends to finish up. The 2,000lb boulder I built into the deck will eventually be a gas firepit once I get the rock hollowed out and the burner in place, then covered with fireplace glass. This was a ton of work but goes to show with proper prep you can do it yourself!

hey vicki...i'm not sure what live forever is, most probably my grandmother called them that, then my mom, and now me lol. i love your tipsy pots and love the little frogs hanging out...especially the one hanging on, he is adorable, has quite a grip =). hi linda! it's a funny thing about stray kats they just seem to stay right on your heels lol, never knew if you caught that later post or not. when she said i had broken every design element rule...first thing i thought was good for me lol. when you posted that you hang out over here and this forum would probably be telling me to add more things to my garden...i thought hmmmmmmmm probably the place for me =). goldenpond thanks it is bricked on the front only...i like it but would like it better sitting in the country on about 10 acres! Then i would have a whole new slate to start gardening, as it is now most of my beds are pretty established but at the point now i can add to and take away from so that is kind of fun in itself. but a whole new blank canvas would be nice too. nonacook thanks for the kind welcome! i will check out the conversation area as well...i've already seen quite a few things i have spoke to my mom about...she is like me in her garden all the time, guess that's where i get it. thanks again to all for such a nice welcome =) and hope everyone had a fantastic mothers day!

Fibre Trends has all the patterns. The clogs are addicting. I have the ballet slipper pattern (not much luck with that one yet)...the Alpine slippers (both the child and adult)..and the Clogs (again both child and adult). THe clogs knit up VERY quickly, and theose little kid ones are so cute. Add some fake fur to the cuff, and you have little girl ones... Vickey

I felt sad about putting them outside last Friday. But they seem to love it, a lot more room to move around than in large basement boxes. In a couple of days or so they will be more ranging free, once they get used to where Home Base is... not completely as my neighborhood is full of foxes, hawks and owls. But they will have a home outdoors they can enjoy. The black Australorpes and the buff Orpingtons remain really friendly. I'll let them enjoy their run starting tomorrow morning. Above, way back in babyhood... Australorpe, Orpington, and a Wyandotte lurking in the background. Buff Orpington in foreground, and over at about 11 am, clock wise. Right behind is a Buckeye. That is a very beautiful deck. I LOVE pergolas; any plans to train something on it like grapes or wisteria (or roses!) You'd be amazed how much things can grow in a short time; grapes, for example, could give you full coverage in 3 or 4 years and look like they've been there forever.

How do you plan to hollow out the rock?

DYI huh? Looks professional, I think everything looks great and the boulder is a great center piece to a beautiful project, look forward to seeing the pictures with the boulder transformed in to the fire pit, take care.

Slateberry asked how I was going to hollow out the rock.

First off I will make a mockup of the cavity and make sure the flame works like I want it to. Cannot take a chance on ruining the boulder because the deck is built around it, it weighs slightly over 2,000lbs and is setting on 3 footings/piers.

I'll first cut a rectangle into the boulder with a diamond blade to define the edges, then I'll take my core-drill machine and core out the majority of the hole by taking several bites, then finish up with a chisel. One bore will be made all the way through to the bottom. I'll remove a couple deck boards temporarily to run my gas line, thermocouple etc. I'll fabricate an access panel of sorts into the deck (basically a door made of the deck boards) to allow access to a ball valve to turn the gas on and off.

Not as complicated as it sounds but have to ensure it is safe. Burner components and piping to be stainless steel, there will be a SST plate below the burner to keep the propane from sinking as it is heavier than air, the thermocouple will cutoff the gas flow if the flame goes out. There will be a bed of sand, the burner, then topped off with fireplace glass so the flame will erupt from the glass.

We'll be experimenting before we cut anything. :)

When we found the boulder in the stoneyard we bought it on the spot and stored it for a while. It was the perfect stone and we knew if we did not buy it right then it would be gone. We instantly knew it was 'the one'. We are always fooling around with stone so we planned a boulder into the deck long before we even had a solid plan.

Real nice job. I used to like making cedar decks, but nobody around here wants them anymore...they want Ipe. The pergola looks great, but maybe a bit close to the gutter and roof. It would look super with some wisteria flowers hanging from it, but anything you run up there will drop a lot of trash on the deck...especially concord grapes (don't ask how I know :-)

Thanks Steve, not even sure if you can get Ipe around here in the boonies, at least my local lumberyard doesn't stock it. (Wonder if they even know what it is?)

I seem to have adequate clearance to both maintain and/or replace gutters and roofing if needed.

Although it would look nice I do not plan on having any climbing/creeping plant material on the pergola as I don't know how I could ever re-apply oil after that.

Don't understand your local customers not wanting Cedar decks any more as they are beautiful, guess Ipe is the latest and greatest though as far as durability (not counting the composites which I dislike).

As long as you have adequate clearance...It looked like the posts were touching the gutter, and the beams were over the roof.

Ipe is a better decking material. and my client base can afford the added cost. Of course, all that may change next season.

For those clients that want custom fences or pergolas, I usually sell them on knotty cedar.

I think that hanging plants would be the way to go. Sometimes, I design in a copper pipe element to make it easy to hang plants...and I think it looks good to.

WHOA....STEVE!!!!! WOW! I just checked out your website and saw some of your work!!! Beautiful! That Ipe is awesome as well as the mahogany, cedar and your workmanship speaks volumes.

Now I am really feeling like the amateur that I am. LOL!!!
