Quilt U class project finished

Hi, everyone - I've been taking a class called Flower Power at Quilt U. She taught us how to really analyze a photo in order to recreate it in fabric. She also taught us her upside-down applique technique, which I like a LOT! :)

Here is my finished orchid:

Lovely! Oh the possibilities with photos. I could see Grandma's old house recreated, or a favorite part of the garden.

This year at school, I had a 4th grader (aged 10)who's family did not allow to go on field trips. Since she earned the privilege, but could not attend; I asked her if she would like to tac her own quilt in place of the field trip. She was so excited!. I took my frames to school, and she helped me to set the frames and sandwich the backing, batting and top. Then I showed her how to tac the quilt. It was crib sized: @45 x 65. (I call them lap quilts or travel quilts when I work with older children.) We set the frames on the stage, although I could have set them up in the library. The other children were fascinated! They begged to make their own, and to help her with her quilt. She would come in to school early, tac as soon as she finished breakfast and lunch, and while waiting for pick up in the afternoons. I pinned the edges for her and showed her how to hem it with a blind stich. As soon as she finished, she wanted to do another. Next year we are planning a quilting club after school. We may have time to move on to pieced quilts, etc.; but the most important part is planting the seed! Kudos to you for your desire to inspire! Thanks Teresa. I've doing Sail Away, and I added the island, boat, and sun last night. I ended up hand embroidering the rays, since I didn't like the way it came out by machine. I removed the tear away stabilizer, but ripped out a few of the wave stitches while doing it! I found a border fabric and possibly binding (or will do pillow case method). It's looking good. Donna, it's absolutely beautiful! Do you have training in art or fabric art? I think the colors and shadings are so stunning. Please tell us how it's done. For instance, the reddish edges on the leaf in the lower left. Surely that can't all be applique. And the shading in the flower. I think you did a fantastic job.

Lois, no art background...just the QU class. The shading is done with thread painting after the applique is done. So - the red edges on that one leaf are just satin stitching with red thread.

I'll be working on my stash of mottled fabrics...they work perfectly for this type of project. :)

Donna,

Congratulations on a beautiful quilt! I took Flower Power several years ago but I didn't finish my project. You are inspiring me to pull it out again.

Despite the fact that I didn't finish my flower, I use upside-down applique from time to time, it's a great technique.

Once again, your quilt is gorgeous. You should be very proud.

Donna, You surely have to be pleased with how your orchid turned out! You could make a wallhanging with a few more squares of flowers and show off your new talent! Is that a picture of your orchid?

Sharon, it's not my orchid, but I did take the photo. It was taken at Hillwood Estate in DC a few years ago. They have a whole greenhouse full of orchids.
