how to address error in measurement of upper vent hood cabinet?

i have discovered both the cabinetmaker and i missed an error in measurements - the upper bank of cabinets along range wall are 3/4" deeper than planned. i don't mind the extra depth, the only issue is the cabinet over the range as the ventahood undermount rangehood specs call for a depth of 12". once i factor in the depth of the subway tile backsplash i am over that by approx 1/2". what are my options to address this small gap other than rebuild the cabs?

Are you saying the depth of the cabinet is 11.5" or 12.5"? For the former, the vent will stick out. For the latter, there will be a gap behind the vent. If the latter, you could just put a piece of plywood behind the vent, mounted to the studs, and mount the vent to the plywood.

If I'm understanding the problem---the undercab hood is 12" deep and the cabinets are 12.75" deep, roughly?---I think all you need to do is put a block of the right depth to make up the difference behind the hood and attach it to that instead of directly to the wall. (We looked at doing this with our chimney hood for other reasons but it was a problem there because the vent cover wasn't deep enough to make up the difference, but here the vent will be hidden inside the cabinets, right?) Generally, I think deeper is better for upper cabinets if they're inset anyway, so I think you'll be glad to have the space---we did 13.5" and even that isn't huge inside! Good luck---I can't wait to see how it turns out! :)

With conventional hood systems, the expectation is that the larger particles within the entire grease particle spectrum are collected by the baffles, and the smaller particles are ejected into the outside air, with only modest condensation or impact collection by the duct. To deal with the entire particle spectrum with a filter pack is a challenge, and probably unaffordable in cost for most residential users. If the Amazon rating is based on comparison to outside venting, the result above might be reasonable. As a commercial example, the Wells WVU-31CT filter system is described below: "Filtration Completely self-contained filtration process reduces emissions below that allowed in NFPA 96 and ANSI UL710B using the EPA 202 test method and includes stainless steel grease baffle filter with grease cup, fiberglass pre-filters, high-efficiency (Particulate Air) filter/ carbon-charcoal filter pack. All filters are easily removable with out tools. Air flow sensors continually monitor air flow optimizing performance and grease removal while an interlock system will not allow cooking appliances to function if filters are missing, clogged or in the event of a fire." About $18k. Electric surfaces only.

Your situation regarding a vent hood mirrors exactly what we had to deal with. Load bearing wall, finished upstairs bathroom, all the plumbing for the bathroom was exactly where we thought we could run the duct work for the vent hood and 8' ceilings. What we did was run 3X10 duct work above the 36" cabinets, vented horizontally to the outside and then covered up the duct work with moldings. We did have to drop the vent hood from 30" above the stove to 27". I was worried about having the vent hood 27" above the stove, but we were in the parameters of what the installation instructions required. The only thing I would have changed was to have a 9" vent hood instead of an 18" vent hood, then I could have had the vent hood 30" above the range, but you know what, it works like a champ. My vent hood is extremely quiet on low and medium low, but does get louder on med high and high. Whatever you choose to do, good luck. I always tell my DH, if they can put a man on the moon, then something is always doable, with some thought, and a woman!!!! Here is a picture of our install. Yep, just stopped back in and saw that OP said hood is 30" and cooktop is 36". That changes my answer. Gotta find 6" to at least make the hood the same size as the cook top. That's what I thought I was suggesting before. camsi-buehl did link to the FKB which stands for Finished Kitchen Blog. Sorry, I didn't realize you did not know about it. Mayflowers, here is how I was thinking each cabinet would be used. I will going up to the cabin next week so will check about the spacing where the sink will end up in this plan. I don't like cabinets above the sink at the typical 18" above counter so would want to move it up at least 6" more, which is why I don't have a cabinet there now as that roofline is in question. I figued open shelving in that area would make it feel a bit less claustrophobic. Being curious, I decided to measure my current fridge to see how much space I really need between fridge and any wall to the side to open the door comfortably. So first I opened the doors just wide enough to allow the drawers to all be fully extended. I put a box on the floor to represent the wall so I could measure. The minimum needed is 4". However, while I can open the drawers, I cannot remove the 2 upper side drawers for cleaning. I would have to pull the whole fridge out and angle it to get to do this. As I currently do this with the fridge in my kennel, I'm not excited to end up with this again. Next I opened the doors to their maximum. This allowed all the drawers to be removed for cleaning. This required 10". If I'm going to need 10" on that side I might as well do a cabinet there. IKEAs smallest pantry unit is 15". I'm planning on the unit with doors and some roll outs which I think will hold plenty, enough for a weeks groceries at least.

hi all -

thanks for the replies. yes, the cab is 12.75" so a bit deeper than planned. the rangehood is a ventahood pro look vent where you mount the top under the cabinet and vent by cutting a hole in the cab and run the vent up it. i am not sure how it would get mounted to the plywood but will ask the GC to review the situation and to correct the error.

what approach do you recommend for the subway tile backsplash - mount the plywood and then tile the backsplash up to the plywood? have the plywood end slightly before the lower edge and run the backsplash slighly up under it?

Your solutions will be easier than ours. There's a cabinetry measurement error that puts the hood 1.5 inches to left of range. Our solution: don't look too hard.

I would go with option #1. If you go with #2, you'll have a little nook or crease of some kind and the grunge of cooking could get up in there. Have the contractor finish the end of the plywood to either match the cabinetry, or to blend in with your backsplash tile/grout -- whichever will be the least noticeable.
