Pics from the Zoo!

We went to the Brevard Zoo today, what a nice day! The weather was beautiful, the company was spectacular (went with my son, my aunt, my uncle, and my grandpa), and the animals were all active and up and about.

Here's a link to the slideshow:

That was a great show--thank you!! I loved the bats, the giraffes (especially the one scratching its butt), all the birds, and everything else.

Great show, April! Thank you! Haven't been to a zoo in years. I keep promising myself a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo.
This is the year...the Muscular Dystrophy Association, of which I am a card carring member, is doing their "Walk and Roll" benifit walk there this May.

I enjoyed your pictures, both the Centennial Parade and the zoo. Have you seen the series on Animal Planet about meeerkats? Of course, right now I can't remember its name, but the animals live in large groups and it's almost like a soap opera!

Hi Jeffrey, I had to repost this thread as I did not know how to send a pic. FYI, please find attached a pic of Mystic Pink. It may be same, but with seasonal and cultural influences, it could be same bloom .. could. Have a look at the eye zone and see what you think. Ignore the petaloids as these can be seasonal. Have a look at the stigma pads .. are they the same colour. Let me know your deductions. Regards, Brian. Image link:

I would say Ponytail Palm too. Botanical name is Beaucarnea recurvata. Don't know how old it is, but the one in the picture is definitely an older plant which is probably taken inside every year. I think I have seen these at Wal-mart & Lowe's the bulbs on smaller plants are usually about an inch across wheres as some of the bigger ones I have seen are 3-5 inches across. I recently saw one of these in the palm house at the San Antonio Botanical garden that would make this one look like a seedling. It was HUGE!! Really neat to see. Hope you find one, it is a very easy plant to grow.

I will try to ID some of your question plants: #104 is a Ficus dammeropsis (as is #82); First large philodendron is Evansii, the second is bipinatifidium; #99 palm is Parajubaea torralyi; Dioon in first cycad photo is meijae, and others are actually ferns I think (Blechnum gibbums); first 'cactus' is indeed a Euphorbia ammak, I think; and second 'cactus' is Alluaudia procera; #11 is a bottle tree or Brachychiton rupestris; the palms you called European Fan palms (can't recall number, if any) are Nannorhops (not European, but Iranian); #57 is Dioon merolae; photo #50 is a Caryota, but not sure what species... something a bit unusual as it does not appear to be a gigas or a urens; never heard of the name Macraw palm... those are Rhopalostylis (Nikau palms I have heard them called) from New Zealand; Hawaiian native succulents are Brighamia insignis; ficus close up #30 is Ficus lyriata; #35 and 33 etc. are Brachychiton discolor; #23 I think is Trithrinax campestris; #14 is Chamaedorea tepejilote; all the Staghorns in all your photos are Platycerim bifurcatum, though they do have nice examples of superbum at that zoo (just no photos of them above); Palm in last palm photo is a Pritchardia, but no clue what species.

That's a great slide show. I love all the pictures. We are planning on going to the Memphis Zoo within the next couple of weeks. We've been waiting for a warm and dry day. We've had one or the other lately, but not both together. :)

The giraffes were our favorite as well, so much so that they were the first area we went to. We lucked out as they feed in the morning and it was 10:30ish so they were still hungry :-)

The one baby was soooo cute, she just wasn't *quite* tall enough to reach the snacks, by craning her neck and sticking her tongue waaaaaaaay out she could just barely get the crackers.

I also liked the one "squatting" down to drink. It's amazing how awkward AND graceful they are all at the same time!
