Good Pool rules for teens?

We have had an inground pool for several years with no problems. Suddenly the 15 and 16 year old teen boys have discovered girls and the 15 and 16 year old girls have been hanging out at our pool which brings the boys over. This leads me to issues we have not had before. After getting very tired of providing clean towels, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, meals, etc. what have other parents of teens done to not be taken advantage of all summer and to limit things? I don't mind providing a towel once in a awhile or snacks and meals occasionally but this is getting to be a big problems when there are several or more teens here daily and nightly in our pool

Don't you make the rules?

Don't be so spineless, sit down with your kid, lay down the rules & tell the kids to pass it on.

Visitors without towels go home wet, no sunscreen get sunburns, no drinks - they go thirsty, etc.

Or look at the other side... your kids could be hanging out somewhere else....

I'd consider it a small price to pay for keeping an eye (or internet camera) on their activities!

we have a few rules....

1.. first and foremost:::
there must be a parent home before there is ANY company...

2. and as the post above says if you want it, bring it...

3. we have certain days of the week that is visitor day... and other days that are family days... NO exceptions.

this is our first summer where this is an issue as well. i am in school, and hubby works nights, so even if he is home, it does not mean that we have a house full of kids.

also, we have only girls, so NO BOYS unless its preapproved.......
i would be greatly concerned of the mixing of girls and boys especially when you are not home....
alot of things can happen while you are gone.

We have large groups of kids over frequently, with parents present, so this is something I have thought through a lot. I have a document that I actually share with moms when they are invited over, now we have pretty much a known group so I go over them with anyone new, but generally my rules are known. Here are my posted/emailed rules: Pool rules 1. Diving allowed off the diving rock only. 2. You may jump off the waterfall, but only towards the deep end. No diving allowed off the waterfall. 3. One person at a time on the jumping/diving rocks. 4. No shoving or wrestling near the rocks. No roughhousing on the seat by the negative edge or on the diving rock/waterfall. 5. Know where the slope is, no diving EVER in that area 6. No peeing in the poolÂ 7. When you are leaving the pool, please retrieve any toys off the bottom People are very respectful of our rules, am I pretty stern with the rules (particularly the diving ones) so I will yank a kid out who isn't following them, and they all know it! I have a narrow beam area that separates the pool from the fireplace area (and it's a long drop onto concrete) so I keep spiky plants on there, that tends to discourage walking. I don't let small kids in without a parent. Ever. Non negotiable, and I don't allow those arm floaties, if they can't swim they need a life jacket. For my own kids, I'm a bit more lax, they can walk on that ledge, they know where the slope is and they can dive off the waterfall, etc, and I'm not always outdoors with them, as they are strong swimmers....we do use the buddy system though.

Just one data point here. Most of the rules Livvysmom listed are at my neighborhood pool as well. 2. No Food, Glass, or Pets in pool area We have the same. People break the No Food part but the No Glass and No Pets are pretty strictly enforced for obvious reasons. 3. Persons having open cuts, sores, rashes or communicable disease are not permitted in pool. I don't think we have quite this rule because the kids always get cuts and the life guards put bandaids on them and send them back into the pool. 4. Children must be toilet trained, and if under 12 must be supervised by a responsible adult. Usually this has to be with health regulations for toilet training and insurance for the under 12. Our pool just changed the age to 12 (from 10) due to insurance. Swim diapers don't contain fecal matter so I'd rather children wearing swim diapers be banned than allowed. This is the first year my four year old son is allowed in the "big" pool because he did not toilet train until after he was three. 5. Adult (age 18 or over) hour is 3 pm-4 pm. 9. Only Coast Guard Approved personal flotation devices allowed, No swim fins, tanks, coins, floats or toys in pool area. The pool allows coins and toys (e.g., pool balls to toss around) but no fins, tanks (!), or flotation devices (waterwings and such). If a child needs a flotation device then the parent has to be with that child at all times. This is actually a safety issue so that parents don't get "lazy" about supervising a child who can't swim. People used to gripe about the flotation device rule until a 6yo child at another nearby pool drowned. He was wearing a flotation device of some sort, went to the restroom, took off the device and did not put it back on. Jumped into the pool. Drowned. The parent or adult in charge was not with the child at any point during this time. It's easy to blame the parent but I think putting a child in a flotation device gives a false sense of security for lots of people. 10. No horseplay, running, jumping or screaming. The extent of horseplay and screaming and jumping is usually up to the discretion of the life guards. Some are strict and some let the children (teens) play if they are the only ones in the pool area. 13. No Diving Obvious safety issues and insurance. We have a diving well. One member brought up the point that if the diving boards (low and high) were removed, the pool insurance would be alot less. The dive team parents objected to this notion.

yes, the oldest has add... which I work with to upteenth degree. We actually already have the homework rule... ours is more like even if you dont have homework you have homework... you have to review what you did in school that day to make sure that you understand everything. Which, is why I find it so frustrating that he or rather they lie about having homework. It is not like they get out of doing work, they just end up in trouble for lieing and not doing their homework. It is ridiculous in a lot of ways ... why spend an hour reviewing everything from the day when you could have spent 15 minutes doing the assignment the teacher gave you. They are just playing every angle that they can and unfortunately it's working on a lot of fronts and I am exhausted. For example: the kids were at their moms house this weekend. The oldest had a report to do. I meet BM at 6 monday morning to take kids to school and oldest didnt do his report. I asked if BM knew and he said "well I asked her if I should finish at your house and she said I guess so" Ofcourse I am highly irritated because we had a very specific conversation on satureday about what he needed to do. And, ofcourse, I make him sit there and do his report. But, to top off the entire deal I show DH what he didnt do... he gets onto oldest ss about it makes a big deal. But then I have to go to school that same evening (report did not get finished before school which I made sure DH knew) and I dont get home until after 9 and he didnt do the first thing on the report and DH says that he didnt realize what he needed to do. So, I end up staying up with ss until late late to make sure the report got done. And then, the next morning DH gives the grounded boys doughnuts even though it is his own rule that when grounded you dont get treats. I don't know... I feel like they are doing it to test me sometimes. It's not like anyone else is holding them to right and wrong and doing what they are supposed to do. (well I suppose that is unfair DH does back me up but i feel like if I didn't say this is the problem it wouldnt be brought up) Really, I honestly feel like they are testing how far they can push and I will still stand strong... but then I feel like maybe they are starting to have an attitude of you arent my parent that has never really been an issue before because they weren't teenagers. i tried to disengage tonight and just let DH handle everything but that sooo didnt work... it is not in my nature. I tired to busy myself in my room organizing... I didnt ignore them, I helped them with homework and answered questions but my goal was to make sure that DH made sure they got their homework done and made sure they werent just wandering around doing nothing... but i couldnt help it... I couldnt just watch oldest ss playing with the girls knowing that he had a stack of homework on his bed... ugggghhh it pretty much boils down to I am frustrated!!

I'm starting to see some judging of others' opinions and experiences ... Everyone is different. Some are paralyzed by the crisis and some spring up to make lemonade out of the lemons they are dealt, and others are somewhere in the middle. I have a high school senior too, but using the examples mentioned above, I don't see it the same, because I went to a school system overseas that had none of the graduation traditions that you have here in the US. There were no proms or big graduation ceremonies. You took your exams, school ended and you went onto the next steps in life. I also hear stories from many Americans that didn't go to prom and didn't particularly like their high school experience due to not being in the IN crowd. So maybe it shouldn't be such a big event? The school visits are great too, but I accepted and attended a graduate school without ever stepping foot in that State before, and that was before the internet and video tours existed. I feel bad my teen will miss out on some of these traditions, but I don't fell sorry for him. I see these as experiences that will help him grow and be more flexible when other crisis come his way during his lifetime. We've all had different experiences and handle adversity in different ways. Some curl up in a corner, some will tell you to pull yourself up from your bootstraps and the rest are somewhere in between. None of the reactions are better than the other, just different for different individuals. Maybe we don't understand that reaction, but unless you know exactly what that person has been through, I don't see how you can judge them ...

I guess I'm a bit confused, do you live in an area with lots of teens and they are just showing up, uninvited? Or are these kids you have extended an open invitation to? Do you know them and their parents, at least a bit?

We have an open invitation every week, and we have a big group of kids (not all teens though) every week. I love it, but I have extended the invitation via the parents and included that they need to bring towels, sunscreen, and snacks.

I'd do 1 of two things if I were you:

-contact the parents if you know them, and let them know their kids are welcome but please ask them to send snacks and towels. If you don't know the parents, I would politely ask it of the kids directly.

-if that failed, I would get a membership to Sam's club and stock up on big bags of snacks, big bottles of sunscreen and cheap towels, and I would feel grateful that my kids were at home and I was getting some insight into their activities during this time! I personally would NOT provide full meals, though I would offer to order pizzas for anyone who coughed up cash to me. I stock heavily on those huge tubs of pretzels and such and put a few things out every week, I buy enough to last me a while so I'm not restocking each week and I don't put it all out at once.

As far as rules, I would let my child know they are not allowed to have friends over when I am not home, particularly boy-girl mixes (this rule is true with or without siwmming). Other than that, I'd let them know you are home and watching from indoors and let them have fun.

We do a lot of things together as a family (we do horse events, boating, etc) so it would not be OK with me to have kids over every single day/night. I would probably feel the need to formalize it and let the kids know they are welcome every Monday-Wed-Friday or whatever you would like, then you'd have a few days each week that you knew were quiet.
