Ipe Decking 1x6 vs Tongue & Groove Covered Porch
Comments (1)Big difference is the obvious: space between boards lets water flow between boards. A regular deck does not need to slope away from the house since it can not hold water. A tongue in grove deck needs slope away from the house or it will risk water being driven against the house and leaking in or puddles forming on deck with minor levelness imperfections. Slope is easier to achieve if deck is not deep. On deeper deck, generally avoid tongue in grove, on shallow deck it is an option--but a very slight slope is needed....See MoreIpe Tongue and Groove Installation Tips??
Comments (11)I had my contractor install a 2nd floor covered porch. It was nailed, and joints glued, over PT 2"x8" stringers. The decking material we're using is PT 1"x6" T&G planking that is smooth on one side and has the appearance of bead-board on the other side. The bead-board side faces down, creating the exposed ceiling of the first floor porch. The PT lumber was stored according to instructions (stacked outside on a covered patio, with spacers for aeration and loosely covered) for several months. Within one day of installation it severely buckled and cupped. Any ideas as to what went wrong and how to correct this problem? Thanks, Grandma Sheri...See MoreComposite Tongue & Groove Porch Flooring
Comments (5)I used Azek to make a white picket fence(you can use regular woodworking tools to cut/shape it) around two sides of our small patio. enough material for 36' of 36" high pickets spaced 8" apart cost over $200. Three things. The chips from sawing/shaping have to be vacuumed up. The squirrels loved to chew on the picket tops, requiring replacement of several. The fence is under a roof, but open to weather, facing east and south. Twice a year, I have to clean of a greenish mildewy stuff. The whole point in using the Azek was to have no maintenance. I have three other similar fences made with PT wood which are primed and painted. I only have to repaint them about every 3-4 years....See MoreLight or Dark Stain on Cedar Tongue & Groove Patio Ceiling?
Comments (7)Deck looks great, can you share details on the decking and roof? we are designing a deck and asked our contractor for roof over it. He is saying we need architectural drawings and roof extension permit from the city. so trying to understand how expensive the actual roof material and construction is before we decide to add roof to our project...See Morenatal
