Comments (9)before you install the t&g, know that it is very leaky. as our biggest heat loss is through the ceilings, sheetrock or tyvek behind the t&g is a reasonable/cost effective step towards air sealing this area. take care to air seal the sheetrock/tyvek at edges. while I love the look, it quickly became apparent when blower door testing homes with these types of ceilings that they are very leaky. the above are solutions for this issue. btw, I like just a clear seal to let the beauty of the wood show. and it looks really cool on the diagonal rather than straight runs. just my personal preferences. best of luck....See MoreBest type of glossy stain for tongue and groove patio ceiling
Comments (24)I enjoyed reading all the commentary. I learned alot especially about the use of varnish. It is an old school finish that uses resins to protect the wood with the added benefit of a leaving the wood with a lovely patina as well as adding a drama to the hue. A comment up the chain aptly likened it to the look of wood on his boat. In addition to varnishes I love using gel stains when i want to add a stain. The viscosity or gel quality allows longer curing period and therefore enough application time to greater control than regular stain products. I have also had excellent effects with gel stain on painted wood. If you work with it the look mimics wood quite convincingly....See Moretongue and groove ceiling - natural?
Comments (2)cedar, white oak, (pine, but it can look yellow and knotty), rustic alder, or reclaimed wood. why can't you do a light stain if it needs something? BTW, you can get regular flooring and put it on the ceiling. I did it with bamboo in the bedroom and a french oak in our bathroom. its T&G. we used adhesive and finishing nails And, found it on craigslist after someone ordered too much and couldn't return it. got it for less than half price! this one is Cypress white cedar...See MoreStain or Paint Tongue and Groove Ceiling
Comments (14)I like the look now and wouldn't stain it, the problem with leaving it would be the way it coordinated with the wood floor. That said, I'd either leave it and change the floor color or make the contractor paint it. One question: Did the T&G sit in the house for two weeks with heat/AC running to acclimate it to the temp/humidity? If not, it's going to shrink or swell (probably shrink) when the house is closed up and heated/cooled. If you paint, you want to paint AFTER THAT. Otherwise, you'll have lines of unpainted pine showing through. The house will be near finished and the contractor will say "You really don't notice it from down here" and won't address the issue....See MoreRelated Professionals
