Riverboat cruise

Would like to hear if anyone here has been on. Riverboat cruise? am thinking about doing one this summer and would like some feedback.

Have two different set of friends that have been on Viking riverboat cruisee in Europe with high praises!

What I remember...the top was I believe a proscuitto wrapped scallop with potatoes au gratin, and the final dessert was apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream in a raspberry sauce. Above that was DH's dessert....he chose the cheese and fruit plate.

Hi cheery one, I'm pleased that you're happy with the "pro"s of your retirement. And somewhat sad that you're feeling that you're not keeping up to the mark of what you'd hoped/planned to do. If you feel the need to beat yourself over the back about that - make sure it's with a wet noodle ... and only five strokes, O.K? As for the "average" retiree, I don't feel that I have too much of a handle on that ... and wonder what level of expertise you may claim in that department? I think that it's important to do things that we can be pleased with ourselves for having done, at the end of the day ... week ... month ... year. Something that I note to have been scarcely mentioned in this thread so far is the need that all of us retirees have to concern ourselves about (as well as people in the workforce) is the erosion of the value of our income (and, for us retirees, our assets) due to inflation, every year for about the last 80. There hasn't been much increase in incomes in recent years, except for the wealthy few ... but the prices keep going up ... and for most of us, those prices of much of the goods and services that we buy have been and are going up faster than the official rate of inflation. When we put money in the bank, or buy bonds, etc. which pay us the same number of dollars after several years that we gave them in the first place, apart from the "rent" on the money, it isn't only taxes and living expenses that much come out of the earnings ("rent on the money"), but an allowance for inflation, as well, in order to keep the purchasing power of those assets equal in ten years to what it is now. Yes, they will take your luggage, but my point is you do have to manage it in your room. And to and from the airport. (When we went to Hawaii, we were flown on a private jet from island to island and the tour guide said people got so used to not managing their luggage, that they'd forget to pick it up at the airport when they got home!) One big heavy bag that we'd have to share is always awkward for us. We prefer to have a small carry on and one larger bag each...you'll want the carry on for the bus as, after breakfast, when you go back to your room, your luggage will be gone and you'll have to have a way of carrying whatever...you need after breakfast such as toothpaste, mouthwash, sunscreen, etc. as well as sweaters, cameras, sunglasses.... I used to use a large purse and DH a small travel bag, but for Panama, tauck gave us zippered knapsacks and we've found them even more convenient. YMMV. Also some mornings you will be needing to be packed up early so they can load the luggage on the bus, so the less you have to manage in terms of clothes and such, the better off you'll be. That dress looks perfect...can be casual or dressed up! We also each got a waistband wallet (Rick Steve's recommends them) for inside the pants to carry passports and money and credit cards. At the heavily touristed areas, you may find pick pockets are active. A friend of mine had a fanny pack on on one of his trips, and as he stepped off the bus, someone grabbed the strap, cut it with a knife and ran off with all his money and cards. Also a good idea to make sure your wallet or cards are RFID protected.

I have been on the one in Memphis and a small one in Texas. But I doubt that is what you are talking about.

Yes, I am talking about a local one. Maybe up the east Coast, or the Mississippi. It is called American Cruise Lines.

Oh I would love to cruise the Mississippi River especially if you start at it's beginning and end up in New Orleans. Plan on staying in New Orleans for a few days. I don't think I would go during the summer, I think fall would be the nicest.

Hubs and I have only ever been on one cruise, around the Hawaiian Islands. It was on the SS Independence, which was run by American Hawaii Cruises, which was owned by American Cruise Lines. After 9/11, tourism to Hawaii dropped drastically, and they ended up shutting down the Hawaii cruises.

The cruise was extremely well run, the food excellent, the staff courteous, attentive, helpful, and wonderful. We would do that cruise again in a heartbeat if ACL still had it operational.

We know that ACL does river cruises in the US, and we regularly receive brochures, special offers, etc., from them. We figure that eventually we will go on each of the river cruises that they offer (including Alaska).

We love the fact that the riverboats have no more than 150 passengers (and some less than that). Most of the rooms have private balconies, which is nice. And, I think river cruises would be wonderful because you get to see so much, you don't have to worry about the motion of the sea, and you still can do shore excursions.

So, go for it! Have a great time, take lots of photos, and post some of them here for us to enjoy when you get back.

I have been on several in Europe and enjoy them very much. They're small and people are nice and friendly and crew is usually great. You see a lot and learn a lot. I've mostly been on Viking.

My parents went on one through China in 1999 and love love loved it.

My boss is currently on one with her father in Europe. They are about 1/2 ways through their vacation and I can't wait to hear all about it when she comes home.

I get seasick easily but had a lovely time on a dinner cruise on the Willamette River in Portland, last year. The motion was minimal and the scenery beautful--the food was also excellent.
