Our 6" drawers have a proportionally smaller area between the rails than the 12" drawers. The recessed part is 2-1/2". We have bar pulls. I've noticed scratches on the rail where my husband's very strong fingernails have nicked the 1/4" edge on a couple of the drawers that he uses most. No scratches on the recessed panel directly behind the bar pull. This is after over 2 years of constant use.

I just went through with this and it wasn't easy to come up with a plan. Definately take this to a lighting store and get input. I went to 2. The plans each came up with were very similiar. Beware - the best laid plans often go to pot once you go to actually install those lights. For us, 95% of the cans were not placeable according to lighting store plan - joist fell right in the middle of every spot. We found an even better plan I love. Here's what I would do based on what each lighting store told me. This would change according to your real life dimensions based on tips laid out below this: 1. place one a foot in front of the fridge 2. place one on each side of the range 3. place one over the sink and one on each counter beside the sink (3 in a line) Do you need to light the area in front of the island? I didn't light walkway areas and was told not to. They said it's lighting the floor and unecessary. Additional tips: 1. There is a formula that may or may not be an old wives tale, but I wanted to meet it regardless in case there was any validity: length of room times width times 1.5. That's how many watts you need for general illumination. So then take your bulbs - are they 50? Add them up. I have almost double what I need but fully customizable so I won't be using all at once unless I need a ton of light. 2. Find out what your lighting radius is from each bulb. My 50 watt par 30 halogens were 3.2 feet so I made sure any dead spots were in unnecessary places. Par 30 if you don't know refers to size of the bulb. 3. if you put the cans too close to the uppers, it will create hot spots on the cabinets. If you place them too far back, you will be working in your own shadow. The ideal is centered right over the counter edge.

Yes Mongo, I was wondering about quality and quantity of light. For putting on makeup I really like having lots of lumens. In the east bathroom that DH now uses for most of his grooming, I have 100watt halogen bulbs on each side of the mirror. I think that is around 1600 lumens per bulb. But a calculator I just used says its 2000 lumens. So at the mirror for DH to shave it is 3200 to 4000 lumens. It works well for him. In my other bathroom (west) that I use for makeup, I have 2 sconces that each have 120 watts halogen. It seems to put out less light. But the room has more dark pieces of furnishings, so maybe that is why. According to the calculator I should have 4800 lumens at that mirror. I would not want less. I have a dimmer on that switch, but never use it because I need the light. I also have 2each 50w halogen overhead lights in the ceiling. This room is 8x10. I would not be happy with any less lighting.

Thank you for the comments! I need to clarify that a few of the lights are already up. I have modified the layout to indicate the following: filled in green circles are where the electrician already made holes for canned lights. I would like to leave those in place as much as possible since he's already done the work for them. Should I add two more lights where the blue circles are? Where would you place them? Would you add any more lights than that? We did not pay for under cabinet lighting. We have it at our current house and never use it so we didn't want to spend the money on it. I have requested they be set at 3000K like the rest of the house. Is that too low? I don't like the super bright look when the K gets too high. The kitchen is on an open floor plan with the living room.
