I'm loving the damask chair, so I would suggest adding some damask print pillows to the sofa.

If you think you could use more wall art, maybe you could complement the black and white photos with a wall decoration that mimics the damask pattern?

I just saw a painted canvas that might work. Maybe you could project and paint the pattern of your fabric?

I may be way off base, but those are some ways to carry the print around the area.

what a great looking room! just a few questions - are you going for a more formal or casual look? Would you like to pull in another accent color? I can see maybe a nice yellow or even an amber orange working for the rug or pillows? I'll try to see what I can find - I love working on mood boards :)

Beautiful wall color! Looks so fresh and nice! Love the B&W photos, but I think you could create a great gallery on the sofa wall, rather than spreading the photos around the room. I just got some fabulous (and cheap!) shelving at IKEA, which have a lip on the outside edge, making them perfect to place frames on and changing them up. They are about 3-4 inches deep I think. Then you could put a great piece of art on the wall between the windows. If not a painting or print, then a fabulous piece of pottery maybe?

What are you thinking of for a rug? Also, are there window treatments in the plan?

You have gorgeous (bones) lines in that room. The color is FABULOUS!! I love that you have waited to see how the room feels.

First, I would find another wall for the pics and put artwork (oversized) where the pics are. I have gone to a store, purchased stretched canvas and actually painted MY OWN to put above the sofa. Put the pics in a hall, maybe? Or on another wall. Just a suggestion. Perhaps a pole lamp on the right of the sofa???

An area rug would go great, I don't know how large the room is and how big an area you want to define. Then perhaps a coffee table. Again, I don't see the whole room so I cannot suggest what size or shape table to use. I like the large squares with small storage in them. They come in so handy to hide toys, tv equipment, magazines, yet they look clean. If you have kids running around I would go with a dark (ebony) wood finish on that table or you will be cleaning the white all the time. Oh, do you have a tv in there? I can't tell.
A smaller table next to the chair would do fine. Those little stools used as side tables (west elm).
No Kids? Get some nice leather ottomans! Oh I love the look of those and you can get them in black leather!!

You can put a nice table/mirrored cabinet behind the chair between the windows and some framed black/white prints. I would move photos to big photo wall only. Just my suggestion. You can frame black/white photos of trees, plants, buildings and it looks like art!!! Nice big mats. Big frames. Round black mirrors.

Maybe a nice big stuffed black leather chair with the pole lamp and small table. Do you have a fireplace?
Do you want window treatments??? Maybe white with grommets and nice black iron rods???
Z Gallerie has some awesome knickknacks at reasonable prices, for all those tables/dressers I would like to see in there!! Maybe remove some stuff off the shelves.

Add a few artsy pieces - vases, unusual glass things...less family photos. Just take it down a notch.
As for your books, leave those with the same colors in your room. Will look so much neater.

Try a couple crazy pillows for texture (z gallerie). I love this room!!! Have fun!! I like to go thru some places online and see what I like/what I don't. I hit up pottery barn/crate and barrel/william sonoma home/horchow/west elm/ethan allen. For ideas. Then run to stores to try to find similar pieces.

What a beautiful room! I love the gray/blue with the crisp white trim. The black and white really pops in the room. I would add pillows, and perhaps some unusual glass accessories in a complimentary color like a lime green. I love the idea of the white curtains with grommets--have those in my bedroom. Make sure you hang them right below the molding and it will add incredible heighth to your room.

Love your room! I would add something more colorful above the sofa... oh and your sectional looks wonderful... I love the lines and I bet it is so comfy!

I would add a rug with some color in it and do the same with some pillows on your couch. For window treatments I would also get something that has a muted pattern but also has some of the color..

You may want to consider a sofa table behind the sofa to place a lamp and some other stuff on. I've seen other people do it and I think it is a nice anchor for a single sofa, especially up against a large wall.

I would also get a simple beige rug to mellow out the cool tones. Maybe beige throw pillows then or pick a nice accent color (like red) for pillows and accessories. You windows are so lovely I think I would just go with black rods and white sheers.

The paint color is BM Oxford Gray - it is really a beautiful color!
I definitely wanted to try and bring some yellow into the room either on pillows or the rug - the wall across from the couch has french doors that open to the foyer, which is painted yellow. As for the window treatments, I don't want to do drapes b/c the french doors (that i keep open) block half of the window on the right - was thinking maybe roman shades? and i want color or pattern on the windows, not plain white - i am not a fan of white sheers.
Throw pillows are so hard to find! This is the rug I was thinking about, but i don't want it to be to close to the color of my hardwood floors and it now says no longer available.

I worked on this before I saw your post about adding some yellow. I will try to rework it later tonight. I do agree that yellow pillows & accents would look lovely in your space. But I'll just post what I worked up anyway so you can get some ideas. I really love the previous suggestions of a sofa table behind your sofa. Gives so many options for that space.

Those are enviable bookshelves, they need more books and fewer photos.

In fact, to my eye, you've got too many family photos scattered all over the place: nearly thirty frames on the bookshelves alone. I'd consolidate (and edit them) them into a single, stronger and more unified, design element. And definitely not the predominate wall decor element, either.

Floors look great and the wall colour is lovely and the windows are fab. You need to make a bridge between the warmth of the floor and the coolness of grey and B&W. I think before you go much farther, it would be a good idea to decide on a good looking rug. Then pull elements out of that to tie the whole thing together.

I have often read that the rug should be the first element in the room design. I don't often follow this advice, but have equally often wished I had.

thanks laurensmom21 - that helps to see it together! I definitely want yellow as the accent color though and still not sure about long drapes in there. it is our "formal" living room, but still a casual space. i love family photos, so they will definitely be staying!

I agree with the previous person who suggested choosing a rug first. That would give you the basis of your plan and then you can pick accessories, art, and window treatments to coordinate. Here's a few rugs I found. If you like one, I can draw up another photoshop plan for you to get a sense of it in your space if you'd like.

sydmad - I'm really enjoying this post and all the wonderful ideas for your room. I love the long curtains and don't think it makes the room too formal if that's what you're worried about. I really like the off white curtains, especially since that's what I just put in my room, but PB has these if you want something with yellow/gold.

Would it be possible to move the family photos to another wall just so you could put some big art behind the sofa or an arrangement like laurensmom did? The skinny one that's between your two windows right now, could go to the left of the window and one of the bigger ones behind the sofa could go in it's place. You might could even put both of the bigger ones in that space with one of top of the other.

@liriodendron - I heard that suggestion too, and actually heeded it. I knew what I wanted as soon as I found the area rug: modern glamour from ethan allen!

Sydmad - I would just be a little more cautious with adding too many different colors and go for a bit more texture and pattern, maybe? You have the blue on walls, white, grey sectional, black and as much as I can kind of feel where you want to take the room with gold/yellow it may just be too much - allovertheroad.
Why not more grays? Silvers? With gold as an accent color? You really should try to stay in the blue/gray area of the color, in my opinion.
Possibly big gold frames for pics/art, gold lamps, gold vases and perhaps a small gold foot stools under a sofa table?

I think with all the good advice here, you will be put together a fabulous room. good luck!!!

Here's some more ideas to consider (are we totally overwhelming you yet?! haha!) I used teacats table and the pretty pb curtains msrose suggested. I put the blue rug in one pic and the yellow one in the other. And now that I look at it, I think the yellow rug might be a tad too much. just my humble opinion though!

I also like worriedone's suggestions of gold frames. There's really so many different ways you could take this room - I'm sure whatever you choose will look fabulous! Good luck!

I would like to suggest a type of coffee tables which have the gray colors.After locating this your living room looking will be amazing and also pillows should be light painted in my point of view.
