Crown Molding Advice needed urgently

Help! I have ended up with 5" between my 42" maple upper cabs and the ceiling. I have 2" crown molding. The original plan was to go all the way to the ceiling using filler (I do have enough filler if needed). My lead carpenter just asked me if I would want to leave 3" between the crown and the ceiling instead. He says my ceiling is very uneven and it may be tricky to get it flush with the ceiling. He said that I could put rope or puck lights on top if I wanted (I had thought there wouldn't be enough room). He held it up for me to see both ways. I actually liked the look of leaving the 3" - it seemed to give the perception of a little more depth (My kitchen newly expanded kitchen is still only 11"x15").

My questions are:

A. Will leaving the 3" between the crown and the ceiling look better and is there really enough room to add accent lighting like ropes or pucks?

or

B. Will the 3" above become an impossible to clean dust trap ?(I'm allergic to dust)

or

C. Both A and B?

I gotta decide quick - I would be grateful for any guidance!
