period as excuse?!?

So as not to hijack the DWTS I'm posting this separately. Kendra's behavior was spoiled and rude. As it has been consistently throughout the season.

It was brought up she was on her Period this week to excuse the worst behavior so far. Not just her but many gals are using that as an excuse for so many things. With medical knowledge having advanced since I was in that stage of life there is nothing to say but................

Really so what if she was on her period? There are medications for PMS and PMDD (many are homeopathic). These medicines are well proven and have a low risk of severe side effects. They relieve the physical and emotional effects of PMS & PMDD. I would hope anyone who feels the effects of these very real conditions would seek help. It isn't "Surprise you have your PERIOD right NOW!!! Being on your period is no excuse for spoiled, rude behavior to judges, fans and dancing coach. My step-daughter had really awful PMS when she was younger. After one particular bad bout the Doc called it PMDD. It was SO BAD it was scary at times. Even before she was on medications she managed not to be rude and offensive to her teachers, bosses, audience or staff. The medication made a great deal of improvement in the emotional and physical distress of her PMDD. I wish there were all these options way back when I was going through PMS regularly. Yes I actually did hide out at home a few times it was so awful! I got the tired, whiny, bloated, weepy, mean female dog attitude then cramps just as the flow would go PMS. I would be happy to start the PERIOD just to stop the emotional roller coaster and weird random pains. Get help for a Doc if you're having PMS or PMDD. It makes a big difference in the lives of everyone around you.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones....never had PMS, cramps, blotting...nothing. no one would ever known unless I told them. I'm also lucky that I am cruising through menopause....

Kendra seemed to have a new excuse every week. Once it was the smoke, then she only had three days to learn the dance (never mind, that was the same time all the other contestants had) and now this excuse??? Time to go home, Kendra, you are out of your league.

Shady, the count tradition had its origin as a sort of anti reaction to the then tradition of going out on the day after Christmas and shooting as many birds as possible. A guy named Frank Chapman sort of spearheaded this bird-friendly alternative and it began to catch on. (It certainly far out-stripped the post Christmas shoot.) After a few years, the time frame of count period was expanded and now goes from December 14th to January 5th. You're quite right, of course, that it's held at a time of year when most areas are near their lowest number of birds (both individuals & species). While I know what you mean about being intimidated by a certain hard-core element, most birders really are quite enjoyable companions, allowing for their obsession of course, and the Christmas Count is great in that it has participation from all levels of skill & experience. If you think it sounds like fun, I'd urge you to try it out some time. There's a virtual certainty of a bird count in your area, quite possibly more than one. CJ, your question is really tough for me to answer because there are many birds that are really rare here in winter, but common at other times of the year. There are others that are found here at all seasons, but not very numerous at any time. I guess, though, if I were to try and come up with the weirdest, never-likely-to-be-repeated, species of bird on the Winnipeg, Manitoba, Christmas Bird Count, it would have to be the count week Baltimore Oriole back in 1987. I agree with Michael - you have some other canes that will provide the leaves while the cane is regrowing them from this long cane. Cut down this long cane at least 6-8 inches lower than you want the actual blooms to be, since the lateral shoots that regrow near the top will branch out to form a new, hopefully lower, candelabra. Just remember that at least in my zone Tropicana wants to be a big rose. You're liable to see it wanting to shoot up large canes periodically all summer. I have two roses in the front of one of my beds that constantly want to be bigger than the space suits (Champagne Memory and Dame des Chenonceau). I prune them down to at least 2' if not lower in the spring, then keep an eye on the canes that shoot out longer and ruthlessly prune then down to at least 2' or less once they're done blooming. Sometimes you'll cut off some branching canes off of that main cane, which can be hard to do, but consider - do you really want the rose to continue to branch out from wherever you cut it? If you cut it too high, you get those floppy candelabras with bare cane below it, and particularly in a pot like yours that can be a tipping hazard in the long run. Congratulations on saving a 50 cent rose! That sounds like you definitely got the good end of that bargain. Here's a photo from last week for Champagne Moment showing the results of this ruthless pruning. You can see how the rose gets intensely bushy right at that 2' length (the fence is no more than 2.5 feet). That long cane stretching out to the right is already cut back to below the fence line this week, being done with blooms, or I'd be in the same situation as your Tropicana before long. Have fun! Mike, It is genetic - supposedly "autosomal dominant". That means a person born to a parent with this condition has a 50% chance of having it himself/herself. It's the sudden change in the light level that triggers the photic sneeze reflex, not the reverse. When you are in a darker environment, your pupils are dilated to let in more light. When you step out into the bright sun, there is delay of 2-3 seconds before your pupils constrict to the appropriate smaller size. It is this brief period when there is an excess of light hitting the retina that the reflex is triggered. That may explain a number of things: 1. the sneeze is a brief burst, the intensity of the sneezing is dependent on how much contrast is between the dark and the bright environment. 2. it is likely that some most folks have a mild response, and it does not bother them. But a few may have a response intensive enough to cause problems 3. you can prevent the reflex being triggered by taking time to transition from the dark to the bright area - put on sun glasses BEFORE you step out, wear a wide brim hat (as suggested), or start off by squinting. 4. most indoor lighting are probably not be intense enough to trigger the reflex, unless, you switch the light on while in pitch darkness. 5. theoretically, halogen lamps may be more likely to trigger the reflex because it's light source is very intese and small in area (that is one reason why it's so useful in certain circumstances - it's perfect for spot lighting). So, if a person with the genetic trait moves his/her face in and out of the halogen light source, while looking at it, it may trigger sneezing. 6. On the other hand, I doubt moving from a darker room into a fluorescent lit room will trigger the reflex, since the light source is so diffuse. This would be the likely scenario in schools, offices, etc.

This is a two way street. The people that get all ruffled at Miele when they suggest that there might be operator error are guilty of the same behavior they're accusing Miele of. They are not considering the possibility that they or a particular use might just using the appliance improperly ! I've had almost 20 years with these machines and Miele sometimes sends out or you receive a bum steer. I've personally seen ones arrive with seized pumps or non functioning heaters - you can count them on less than one hand, but they are out there. second, Miele designs and builds one of the most advanced and highest quality units in the industry today. Like any other company, they sometimes ship a defective unit or it gets broken in transit from Germany or they just get or specify a not so good batch of parts. This does not man that they are a bad or inferior company. It does mean that THAT particular user's experience is not so rosey and like a wrecked car you can't un-wreck it. Knowing that you design and produce one of the best machines in the market it's natural for a company to take the view that if there is an initial prob. that it is operator error, especially when the data actually bears this out. Now, what this doesn't take into account is that the product might just not be the correct choice or a particular individual. i.e I just like rinsing my dishes so they don't get crusty or I like using x brand of detergent which for whatever reason doesn't work in a particular unit. (asolo - I agree with you in principle, but some combos just don't work especially in the prior generation) Or - my dishes are wet AND I refuse to use rinse aid. The prob. is big corp. brother makes NO provision whatsoever for the fact that sometimes a product is not a good fit for or able to meet the needs of some customers. For those that take umbrage at all the try this or that. Take a breath - most of these are good suggestions that have worked for people that have had problems with these in the past - sure it'd be nice to take it out of the box and have it adapt to my habits without needing to read the manual, but that isn't the case with much these days. Again - all this hopping on one leg patting one's head while tugging the left earlobe may be more than a particular customer wants or feels (s)he should have to invest in getting a tool to work for them. But, refusing to do it once you're in the game AND THEN calling the product or co.'s stuff, junk isn't quite fair. I'd advise megg not to get a Bosch - or any other Euro washer and the results are very likely to be the same. I do hope (s)he will come back and tell us what they ended up replacing the miele with and how the new unit fairs.

I was lucky also, no problems at all. I was raised in an age where you didn't even wash your hair during your period. I swam, took gym class anything I wanted to do I did.

"Period as an excuse" ... dang! Ain't that the truth!! It seems very prevalent these days. And not just "the period" itself, it's also the week before AND the week after are also "excuses".

I find it odd too that a woman's period is everyone's business. Some gals had cramps, but other than that & taking a Midol once in awhile, we barely knew when one another was having their periods... back in my day. It really was no big deal... a stark contrast to today, imo.

My periods are horrible. PMS including a day or two of keeping myself in check as far as my attitude, excruciating cramps that last for 3-4 day that are sometimes so debilitating I can't function until ibuprofen kicks in, etc. I don't use it as an excuse (I have had to call in sick a few times though), although I will tell people close to me that I'm in a bad mood or feeling crappy and to give me some space. There is nothing medically wrong with me to be fixed, bad periods run in my family.

Just because there are medications for it doesn't mean they always work or work for everyone...just like any med. Some of the meds for PPMD are just anti-depressants, that in my opinion, they are now trying to prescribe to everyone for every ailment. Periods are nature and no medication is going to "solve" it. Besides, some people don't like to take medications unless absolutely needed.

So while I don't think periods are necessarily an excuse for bad behavior, I also don't think there's a magic pill to solve them or that people who have been lucky enough to have easy periods should think that since it was easy for them it is easy for everyone. I feel like that's the same thing as someone who has had an easy labor telling everyone how easy having a baby is. Everybody experiences things differently.

That being said, I don't watch DWTS and it sounds like she's just a baby.

I so agree with you Jennmonkey..
All of this its so easy talk and their is nothing too it..has me thinking none of you have ever suffered from PMDD.. and yes Bee for me its the week before and the week after....horrible cramps, muscles so sore you cant raise your arms to even brush your hair, headaches, stomach issues..I could go on, but the day after it begins.. I am a different person all together and I feel GREAT!!

...I try not to use it as an excuse but I find my family does.

I look forward to reading the link the op provided..but so far nothing has worked for me..Tried Yaz and thought that was the answer to my prayers and it was for the first 3 months..and then nothing bad and worse than ever..

I never had anything for the pms, or the pmdd they call it in todays world. ALTHOUGH, I would have GLADLY taken anything the week before, and during my period when I had one. The week afterward was no problem. I had terrible cramps, all over aching, headaches and extreme moodiness. I would cry, bit%h, aat everyone and anything around me, I even hated myself.... I went to a psychologist one time to talk about how I would feel during that time. Diagnosis? emotional distress caused by general non well feeling before and during mensis..It was written in the DRese language, but that is generally what my diagnosis was. I was sent to my Family dr. for a physical and he sent me back to the psychologist, DR. told me every woman has a period and I had a choice whether to allow myself to get through it. This was back in the late 60's. I never went back to complain to any Dr..I just figured I needed to try harder to cope. (I never succeeded at that) I had a hysterectomy(complete) about 20 years ago, because I started hemmoraging. I was a mess inside, with multitude of tumors.(pre cancer cells were found in the tumors or at least what they sent off for a biopsy) I was a changed human being after that. Yes, I had the hot flashes but I refused any kind of hormone, I truly started LIVING after that hysterectomy. If I knew what back then in the late 60's what a change after a hysterectomy would be like I would have DEMANDED a hys. after my last baby. If you have never suffered with pms or the newest diagnosis pmdd, call yourself blessed. Some of us went through He$$ and back because of the female cycle. Thank GOD and my Dr. I am through with it. If you have/or have had the pms or pmdd, I TRULY empathize with you. I know your pain!!!!!!!!!

Littlebit I would love a magic pill for my stomach. I thought I had found one, but after a couple of months...it made my stomach 100 times worse than without the pill. I was lucky with my periods but not with my stomach. We all have our health problems, I am just grateful I have lived as long as I have and been healthy as I have been. A few aches and pains, but nothing needing pills for.

I use my period as an excuse for everything all the time even when I don't have my period. I forgot to get the milk--oh, I must be getting my period. Don't feel like raking the leaves- oh, it must be my period. Ate too much chocolate- oh it must be my period. Irrationally yelled at the dog -oh it must be my period.

Seriously girls, if you're not using your period as an excuse for everything you do that's a little off, you're missing out on one of the great tools of womanhood. :-)
