Bosch or Jenn-air

Hi,

I am new here and trying to get my kitchen remodel of the ground. I have gone through many of the threads and I appreciate all the info. I have not had much luck finding out about Jenn-air quality. I have heard mostly good things about Bosch.

We are looking at cabinet depth fridge, induction cooktop, wall oven microwave combo, dishwasher and range hood.

The folks at the various stores like to try and sell you everything in one family of applicances, based on bundling and rebates. They also claim that the stainless steel can look different between manufacturers. Although, I understand that no one manufacturers does everything the best, it doesn't seem like the worst thing either, if the bundle price is good.

Has anyone recently purchases Jenn-air (within the last year)? How does the quality stack up?

I am looking for good quality that will be hassle free for years.

I purchased a 42dba bosch about 6 months ago and I have been very pleased with the noise level and clean factor.

I also puchased a GE Advantium at the same time (not so happy with that one) and I never noticed til you mentioned it that the stainless has a different sheen to it. Now I like it even less....

The handles for different models will vary so if you want everything to be the match you would need to get the same brand.

My Jenn-air stove was purchased 4 yrs. ago for our lake place and it has seen heavy use through the past 3 yrs. I love it, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Mine is a dual fuel range.

I have a dual fuel pro range at our home and I actually prefer the Jenn-air.

All the appliances at the lakehouse are stainless, and all are different brands. I cannot distinguish any difference in the appearance of the finishes. I chose each of them based on specs/features I was looking for, instead of just buying all one brand.

I know this is going to sounds nuts, but I don't think I have ever HATED an appliance, or anything or anyone, for that matter, as much as I hate my dishwasher. Consider this a public service announcement. Right out of the box, it was a complete pain, it never really got my dishes clean, no matter what. And the machine was expensive to boot! Approximately $1300-what was I thinking? This supposedly state of the art dishwasher does not do its job. I have to rinse (practically wash) everything before putting it in the dishwasher. If I don't, everything will come out with baked on food - with every cycle, including sanitize or heavy wash! And every cycle is an eternity...not one "quick wash" cycle. Before our house burned down, I had a Bosch, which I loved dearly. I would never have broken up with my beloved Bosch, but for the unfortunate fire. I could put dishes and silverware directly into the dishwasher without ever rinsing them off and they would come out sparkling clean. Isn't that what you expect from a dishwasher! I have to basically wash everything before putting it in the crappy JennAir dishwasher, and many times wash it all again after I remove things from it! I have tried it all, dishwasher cleaners, vinegar, dishwasher detergent with phosphates, dishwasher "boosters", JetDry. I am disgusted, and I think I have been beaten. I want my Bosch back, boo hoo! I understand that this is supposed to be more "green" and use less water. Hello, JennAir??? If I am essentially washing one load THREE times, that is a tremendous waste of water! Nothing green about it. About the only nice things I can say are that it is an attractive appliance, and very quiet. But I don't need something pretty, quietly sitting there, taking its sweet time, NOT doing it's job in my home! (I've worked with enough people like that!) I have contacted Jenn Air, their customer service is awful and dismissive...they got my money, won't do anything further and they don't care about pleasing the customer...simply awful.

The 10" Dacor (I have not found the 15" Dacor for sale here) can be fitted with a 1200cfm inline blower for $699 so the cost is comparable to the Miele but the blower is more than twice as strong! I'm tempted to go with the Dacor for that reason if it will fit in our cabinet (we are not replacing the cabinet). Does anyone know whether I will need that much power with an induction cooktop? If I don't, I'd rather go with the taller Miele which is the same brand as the cooktop. Thank you, Barb

A friend of mine had this "no grout" look and she told me she had seen it in several kitchen magazines. I used her tile man to do the job too. Although we still have a few things left to be done and tweaked, we've been able to cook in the kitchen for a good 3 weeks and I haven't seen any evidence of dirt or anything getting in the cracks. In fact, maybe because there's less of a line as you'd have with grout, there's less chance anything would get there. Might be a question for Bill Vincent on this forum. He also might know if there's a backing glue that is not red.

That's long been a sticking point with Whirlpool-made dishwashers that use cabinet-panel doors; depending on the cabinetry they are either a tight fit or won't fit flush at all. I would have assumed Whirlpool's European-market dishwashers already have the shallower dimensions and they could have sent one over to the US (the Bosch that Jenn-Air is using is also imported from Germany, or appears to be; it's certainly not the US Bosch design which is about 1-3/8" deeper). Those 'discerning customers' have probably cross-shopped Bosch or Thermador and will recognise the Jenn-Air as being the same thing, only with fewer features. The only rationale I can think of for Whirlpool not importing a Euro model is they'd have to either stock a unique set of parts in the US or make owners wait a long time for repair parts to be shipped from overseas; plus they'd have to train service techs. By rebadging a Bosch they can ue the existing Bosch parts and service infrastructure. Still, it feels rather like finding out a new top-of-the-range Cadillac is actually a rebadged BMW, with the explanation that Cadillac simply didn't have a car that fit into a market segment that was becoming popular. Makes me think that management wasn't very prescient about where the market was going.

we have had our Jenn Air 30" pro range, 72" sxs fridge and DW working for about 1 month now. Hard to say how they are functioning. I love the range.....frdige OK so far. DW is great, quiet, does a good job.

Would be happy to give you some other input, but without longevity, not sure it would help! let me know!

We got a Jenn Air single wall oven, convection microwave, gas cooktop & dishwasher installed about a month ago (with their free dishwasher offer, we decided to update all the 17 year old appliances!) All are working well, but it has only been a few weeks. I love how quiet the dishwasher is. I believe that it is a re-branded kitchenaid DW.

I saw that you mentioned you were looking at a combination wall oven microwave unit and I wanted to share the advice we got when we were replacing ours -- microwaves tend to fail much sooner than ovens, so the salesman strongly recommended separate units. We did this, with a trim kit for the microwave, and it looks fairly close in style to the combo unit we replaced. This also let us get a microwave door that swings out instead of down, which is easier for my kids to use.

Each company's appliances have different features. I would choose according to your needs and the reliability of each appliance rather than trying to match the stainless steel.

Thanks everyone ... I appreciate the feed back. I am now not sure whether to just try and pick the best brand of each type of appliance or stick with a family of appliances.

I agree with avidchef. I bought a Jenn-Air DW, ref, warming drawer, and oven for a few reasons: got a rebate; the handles matched; they got good reviews on Consumer Reports. (cooktop and drawer MW are other brands.)

That was 3 years ago and I wish I had found the forums then. We've been disappointed in the performance of the DW, and the refrigerator gets cold spots that freeze lettuce among other things.

Things may have changed since 3 years ago, but from what I've read here many times, it's better to buy the best in each category rather than relying on one brand to make excellent appliances in each category.

Wondering about your 2 choices though... have you looked at others? I believe that Bosch dishwashers, being in metric measurements, are a bit smaller than US brands. Before we bought our current DW, we compared the lower rack of a Bosch and a KitchenAid DW, and the KA had more room.
