have a Mini max NT , E05 errors, replaced thermal fuses (4) will heat then go out after 2-4 hours, have 'flame back' that has charred wires . Have heavy blck soot in exhaust. Heater used since 6-06, never had this problem. Is ignitor switch hard to change?

Hey CJ76 - I don't think you posted in the correct spot.

Oh yeah, you're screwed. That is backwards and the dirt/DE is going right into the inside of the cartridges. This is why I don't like valves on these filters as nobody can get it right. The plumb job needs to be like a sand filter but few know that either.

The pump inlet is correct in the middle port. The QUAD requires a reversal of the outlet and waste lines. For the QUAD, the handle remains in the UP position and the waste line plumbs on top. The POOL line plumbs on the bottom.

Your job is plumbed as a standard DE filter with WASTE on bottom and POOL on top with handle in down position.

The sad thing is the darn valve comes with a blazing yellow tag on the handle that says exactly what to do.

Ask for a new filter with your replumb. Those cartridges are shot.

Thats about a $400.00 mistake.
Make sure they replace the cartridges, I am sure they look all blown out.

The pb's plumber is coming tomorrow morning to replumb. DH and I spoke with 3 different Pentair reps to confirm the plumbing was backwards...all answered "yes" and they mentioned about blown cartridges too.

1) once the pipe is replumbed, will the filter even work properly? I would imagine is has to work better than now, but if the cartridges are blown, what will the filtering capabilities be? Not sure we will get new cartridges until next week if the pb even replaces them., but will be demanding them for sure.

2) what does a "blown" cartridge look like in case the plumber tries to pass them off as being unaffected?
Will the QuadDE work properly with just new cartridges and not a whole new unit? I know the pb will fight us to the end for a new unit.

3) will I need to add more DE (in my case Aquaperl) afterwards?

RepairGuy - I also have a question about our Whisperflo DS 2.0hp pump...are you familiar with them? The plumber had the electrician take some type of connector off from behind the plate with the toggle switch to direct wire it since the electrician was having trouble wiring the pump to the SWG. So we had only high speed for a few days. When the electrician came back to connect the SWG he asked if I had the connector plug...nope!! Now we have no connector to operate the low/high speed so our two-speed pump only works high speed! I talked to Pentair today and they are not sure they sell a separate part for just that. My "case" is being sent to their technical dept.

Why don't you just put a clock on the two speed so it can switch on its own?

The part number is 79129900 for the two speed toggle.

Don't settle for anything less than a new filter. They won't be able to buy the cartridges right away so tell them you want the whole thing replaced. They already have to scrap the valve.

It is not the actual toggle switch that was thrown away. it was some electrical "piece" (sorry, very limited electrical knowledge) that when you open the backplate that the toggle switch is on, this "piece/plug" would be there. I guess the actual toggle would hit the "piece" and the pump would change from high/low.

I will see if DH can take the backplate off tonight, so I can take a picture and post it.

Not if you have a WhisperFlo. The toggle is on the back cover and it has wires that snap onto the main terminal board. It is the only difference on the motor as opposed to a two speed that does not have the toggle.

Here is a link to the pictures of what is missing from the pump. I think it could be the main terminal board that the electrician refers to as the "plug"...oh I don't know.

I took pictures of the toggle plate, which is where the electrician thinks the missing piece is and pictures of the inside guts just in case something looks odd there too.

You're missing the wires on the toggle to the switch plate. you have a red, black and white in the motor. The toggle has wires that snap onto it and then into that plate. Three wires in the motor, three on the toggle.

I'm guessing you'll have to make the wire harness. What kind of clock do you have? It would be a heck of a lot easier to just pop in the right clock and run it that way. You'll save a lot more energy. The clock will pay for itself.

If you have an Intermatic clock, you need the P1353ME.

Thanks for all of your help repairguy. This pool install has been one HUGE nightmare after another. We did such thorough research on this company and have a few friends who used them too. Not sure why we got nailed though.

So just to confirm, if we were to get the P1353, I can eliminate the need for the connector plate/harness and at least write the pump off as an open issue. The intermatic clock has all of the wires needed? Do you know how much wire in length it comes with or do we need the wire? (Again, sorry, very limited electrical knowledge) I am going to call the electrical supply house this a.m. to see if they have it or I will order one online today.

The pb has yet to come out for the filter. He was supposed to be here yesterday.

If you have the standard clock mentioned, this is a direct replacement as it is the mechanism only. If you have some other clock, you'll need the entire clock and the labor will be more.

For the mechanism only, we charge $226.00 installed. Not sure what the retail only price is but I expect it is about 199.00 to 260.00 in range.

The install is a bit tricky if you've never done one or can't read electrical diagrams as the paperwork it comes with is not clear to the novice or most pool guys.

The pump wires you have connected will go into the mechanism but a few small pieces of wire will be needed depending on your installation.

Get a load of this one....the plumber came this morning to "reinstall" the QuadDE. He backwashed what he could I guess, luckily I used the Aquaperl. Then he checked and all 4 cartridges are blown. So he hooks everything back up and of course, I end up with whatever wasn't backwashed, in my pool!! Good grief!! He says he was going to try to get his sales rep to fedex the 4 cartridges for tomorrow (doubtful IMO).

I then asked him about the connector for the 2sp pump. He really didn't say much. He then headed to his truck and I went to the water to test it. He comes back with a switch, which I thought was mine and I said "that is what my plug was missing, so can you hook it up?" He tells me that wasn't my plug. That was a spare he had in the truck. I asked him to show me how it would go in the pump, so he unscrewed the backplate, and low and behold.....the connector was there and he told me all the electrician HAD to do was connect the wires, except that there was nothing there to connect the last few days!!! That slime-ball had put it back on when I was inside and he was working on the filter. I have no idea why he would take it to begin with, but I did not even say it was not there last night, and I have the pictures to prove it. I just left it as is. Unbelievable experience we are having here...never will we put in another pool.

Thank goodness for those, like repairguy, who dedicate some of their time on this forum so we can get the CORRECT information.

BTW - we do not have a clock at all right now. I will be sure to find someone who knows and UNDERSTANDS the diagrams since the electrician had a difficult time with our SWG. Do you happen to have any good diagrams for the P1353ME that you can post?

RepairGuy - a diagram for the timer would be great, thank you. The pump is turned on/off on high speed by one on/off switch that is wired with one wire. The low/high speed was not available until yesterday when the other piece of the connector showed up.

Just curious, Pentair told our pb that a 2hp pump was too big for our QuadDE80 and the cartridges would have blown regardless. They are upgrading us free of charge to a QuadDE100, but curious what your thoughts are on the initial setup? I had spoken to Pentair quite a few times with different setups 1.5hp vs 2.0hp, but always the Quad80. They always told me it would work fine.

The specs are ok for that combo. You would add the clock in place of that box above the pool pilot. Is there a gas heater, and if so, do they have it wired on the pad with the motor?

No heater, but we will have a solar controller (Aqualogic GL-235), yet to be installed. This will be on its own breaker and will be operated by the valve control and when the pump is on. I don't think we will need this on a timer since we will not need it during the heat of summer, only early spring and fall.
