I think two armchairs and a round table would be great! A spot to read the paper, or a book, and have a cup of tea seems appropriate for a kitchen area to me.

I totally agree with Sue on the comfy chairs and small table. I've seen that done before, and loved the look. In fact, if our next house has a breakfast nook, that's definitely what's going in there.

Two armchairs and a table would be great. I've also seen a small couch with a coffee table or ottoman. I love the idea of a small sitting area directly adjacent to a kitchen. The mother of a friend of mine has this setup. When we visit, sometimes our help is not needed working in the kitchen, but we can comfortably visit and socialize by sitting on the couch, still interacting with the cook(s) but out of the way of the work.

I don't think you need any help at all lmmccain, you already had the perfect idea. It'll look great!

Depending on how much light the room gets, you could use it for your herb growing room. I designed one with built in's on and around the windows, above a cozy built in window seats. For a table you could use one of those convertible coffee/dinning tables.

Depending on your budget and your abilities, you could always do a faux painting of pub style planking for the walls. That way you are not stuck with something you may out grow if your tastes change. My daughter is a professional painter and did a basement room very similar to your in this faux style, and I�ll tell you, you would have to touch the wall to believe it was not real wood. Granted it was not inexpensive labor wise but compared to real woodworking labor is was a bargain.

As for the fire place, what about the field rock (it looks like uncut rocks, rather than the spilt field stone that you show in your picture.

When it comes to your backsplash, a mirror which has the family name etched in it would be nice, but rather than affixing it as a permanent installation you could paint the backsplash with a good quality paint and then install the etched framed mirror with mirror hanging hardware.

PS, if you are considering doing a pub style, you should consider changing the light over the pool table and install a pub style stained glass pool table light.
