I have two in a kitchen drawer. I use them mostly to pry up a glass jar's screw off metal lid, to break the seal so I can unscrew it. Dottie

I always thought that was sort of a slang term or nickname.
I can't tell you how many people have NO idea what I'm talking about.
I look for them when ever I'm out where kitchen gagets are sold. I don't think I've checked the hardware store.

coral ok that was funny. Lots of people here with a good sense of humor. We are down to one church key at our house.

I grew up in a house that just called them bottle openers. I did hear the term church key but was under the impression that was for the one that only opened bottles. Usually a hollow, almost like a thick wire shape for the bottle opener and handle. I have several. I knew they were collectables, plus I like them for some reason. I also keep them around since screwoff tops don't always, at least not always easily!

I first thought of the opener when I saw the subject but so often, people are talking about something other than the subject suggests, o at least to me!

We always carried them at the dollar store I managed years ago - don't know if they still do but certainly worth a look.
I think thrift shops and garage sales would be a great place to find one as well.

DH still has the one he had when I met him.It was on his key chain then and still is,even though it hasn't opened a bottle of beer (or anything else for that matter) in over 40 years!LOL Ahhh the memories!

I rememeber "church keys" openers. Those were used to pierce the tops of metal beer and soda cans before the advent of pop tops. Those were also used to open cans of motor oil. You might find one in an auto parts store. The last time I saw one of those was in the kitchen section of a grocery store.

I think I got my last one at WalMart.

We just always called them beer can openers. I have one or two but never use them anymore to open cans of anything. I just use a regular can opener. I had never heard them called Church Keys.

I normally call it a beer can opener, but sometimes say church key to be funny.

Somehow I assumed they were a normal part of everyone's stock of kitchen utensils.

Yes, I remember that term, but we always just called them bottle openers. The one I have has "Pearl Beer" on it.

They used to include one with every 6 pack purchase. No recycling worries back then.

They still had them at Walmart last year when I worked there doing the remodel.

I always think of Curch Keys for opening cans of beer. Before the pop-top days!

Yeah I have a number of bottle openers, I need the pointy end for punching through cans. The one I have is an "updated" version with a black rubber grip and coated metal. It's terrible, doesn't work at all. Now when ever I go looking for a plain one all I find are those big smooshy ones. I like simple and traditional.

I remember my dad using them for motor oil, I'd forgotten all about that. Motor oil comes in plastic bottles now :(

I thought church keys were just the bottle opener kind.
Not the puncture one where you'd punch a hole in a can to pour.
The handle with an oval hole to remove bottle caps is how I remember church-keys.

Those puncture kinds are perfect for breaking the seal on jars. Just lift the edge of the lid and it "pops" right away and is easy to open. I often wish I had one of those, and I don't.

A few years ago Ragu supplied a plastic opener that is great for breaking the seal on some of the jars. Sometimes a good upside down whack will do the job too.

I have 3 of them on my fridge,and yes they still sell them.I got dgd a couple at the dollar store(dollartree) about 2 years ago and i still see them in there from time to time.

Jazdip-That's what I thought too.The one DH has on his key chain is the bottle opener kind.I always called the other kind a can opener.Just bought two because the kids didn't have one here.Ordered one from Pfalzgraf with some other sale items forgetting that I had bought one at WalMart a couple of weeks earlier.Both are exactly alike.One from W/M was almost $3.00 and the other was $1.00.Neither one works worth a flip!LOL

Some openers have both kind, one on each end.

They should still be available as i have one for the camper. Maybe some might even call it a can punch, but i knew church key. One of my mechanics called it that. I always called it a can opener.

I definitely know what you're talking about. I noticed they have them at our local grocery. Two to a package.

I recently saw them in my local grocery store in the gadget aisle.

Never heard them called that but I do have one. I think I bought it recently too because I couldn't find my old one. I just can't remember where I bought it.
