I don't have keys to my house. The key to my car lives in my car. When I travel, I don't take keys when I am dropped off at the airport. Otherwise, I must carry my single car key. LOL! I don't even carry a key to our business.

DH, OTOH, carries lots of weird keys. Keys to his safes, etc. They don't even look like keys.

And I thought leaving the house without wet wipes was "livin' on the edge"!

Well, I don't remember being keyless, but do me a favor and say hi to my daughter for me if you bump into her while you're in Asia. I miss her! Thanks.

spitfire too funny!! yeah last time I had no keys when I was a kid in Phoenix and we only locked the door at night if we remembered. The keys had been lost for years. The years of leaving the house unlocked were pretty free.
Other than that - nope.

I confess, I can't even visualize this. Last time I was keyless, I am quite sure I was too young to stay home alone. And how do you keep the key to your car IN your car? You park at the mall and leave your car unlocked?

I have two or three (hopefully, not any more than that...) friends who don't carry their purses or keys much of the time. So, we are at a meeting and Cindy's DH has to be in a longer meeting. She's stuck unable to go home because "Joe has the car keys". So I tell her I can take her home. But "Joe has the house keys, I didn't bring my purse!" She's stuck. And this happens constantly. I don't get it. Another friend plans to go out to lunch with some of us, but then, has to cancel because "I don't have my purse and my keys with me, so if Dan doesn't get home before I do, you will have to take me home with you!"
Nope. Don't get it. Not having keys means you must rely on someone else for the most mundane things. No purse means you can't pay for lunch. Even my children were taught at an early age to always carry house key and I.D. Everywhere.

When I am home, the key is always in my car. At the mall, it is locked. Since my house is always home, it is never locked.

When I have the Prius (Max has it now), the remote key is hooked to the inside of my purse. That car doesn't need to have a key inserted. You can lock and unlock the doors, start and stop without the key, as long as it is somewhere in close proximity. I love that.

I don't keep house keys with me, and at home my key ring stays in my car. When I'm out and about, though, I generally have my car, office, and post office box keys on the key ring in my purse or pocket.

Do you mean that someone is always home? If there is no one at home, do you lock your house? The reason I ask is that if a house is burglarized and it can be proven that the thieves did not have to break in because the door was left open, the insurance company can refuse the claim. It happened to folks I know who had their house burglarized many years ago. Not a great idea.

This is a bit OT, but relates to the changing meaning of keys and keylessness. A friend of mine could not open the door of the car because the battery was dead in her fob. After thinking and thinking about what to do, she called OnStar, and they told her "Ma'am, you Can unlock the door with the key."

I understand that some people don't want to give muggers both a key and their address from a driver's license, but ??

I've had a house key since, I believe, my junior high school days at least, when I'd be coming home before my mom and dad. I'm sure that for a few years before that, the back stairs entrance to our top/bottom apartment duplex was unlocked and a key hidden somewhere inside that hallway.

I do keep a house key on my keychain, but 99% of the time I do not use a key to enter my house. We keep the door between the garage the house unlocked. Our garage door requires a code, and we have an alarm system inside the house. We do have a key hidden that fits the back door in case the power goes out and we can't open the garage. DH's car doesn't require a key to lock/unlock/start so technically he could go key-free, but he would still need to carry his fob (which has a key inside it).

DH is wants one of those biometric locks for our side door (thumb/fingerprint, not a numeric code) to have one less key to lose. :-) It's a bummer that they're so industrial looking, though.

All I carry on a normal day are house and car key/fob (hate that clunky thing). Keys to the yard gate padlocks, shed, household safe, a couple of friends' houses (so we can feed their pets or whatever) and other random things like that hang on a key rack in the kitchen, I don't think there's much point in carrying them around all the time when they're only needed occasionally. I usually don't take my keys along if I'm going somewhere with DH (who has a house key, a car key/fob - the key flips out of the fob when you push a button - and the key to some work thingy that doesn't look anything like a key at all), since he prefers driving when we go out together. I haven't been completely keyless since 1987 when I got my first car. Back then, we never locked the house - no one we knew did, living in exurbs and rural areas - so the only key I carried was my car key, or once in a while I'd have a key to somewhere I worked. When I lived in Chicago and Boston and didn't have a car, I had to carry keys for the main door of the apartment buildings, my apartment, and the mailbox, as well as a little leather holder for my public transit card and (in Chicago) school ID.

It's been so long since I've been on a plane that I don't remember if I took my keys - I'm pretty sure I did. But that was long enough ago that I was also able to take two actual swords onto the plane in my carryon (don't ask).
