Okay, another question for tech toy people. 1st generation ipad?

Has anyone replaced their 1st generation ipad for a newer version? I am wondering it I might want to begin with the 1st generation (presumably cheaper). I am actually still trying to decide WHAT I want (Kindle, Nook, ipad, etc.) but like the idea that I can use the free apps to read Kindle or Nook using the ipad. Maybe by the time I graduate, I will know which one I want- it will be my graduation present to myself. :-)

I have a 1st Gen and have played with a 2nd Gen. It is lighter to hold for book reading but not as comfortable as my kindle. My sister prefers the backlighting and does most of her reading on her iTouch. I will wait for the next generation to upgrade. The two cameras just aren't important to me. The iPad has versatility that the kindle doesn't. eg- surfing the Internet. The Kindle can do it but you won't like doing it. It really comes down to what you will use it for. If you are strapped financially as a student, there is a new kindle out for $114 (WiFi) but you have to put up with ads on the screensaver and homepage. The books are not affected. You save twenty-five dollars.

If you have a computer, I don't see the point of owning an ipad. I also have an iPhone and to me, the iPad is just a big iPhone without the phone. I love my Kindle. Part of me was miffed that 3 weeks after I got my Kindle, they came out with a cheaper version, but who needs the ads/ While they're only on the screen saver and the bottom of your homepage, $25 isn't enough to pay me for that.

I would think the non-glare of the Kindle would be nicer on the eyes, and the fact it's lighter and smaller and easier to hold than the iPad.

I've played with the iPad a few times at Best Buy, but just can't justify it. You can go to Facebook, but can't play the games: it doesn't support Flash.

A couple of notes because the rest is going to be rather long and involved: Lynda, I have the Vitex marked for you and in your baggie! And thank you for the marigolds! They will be very interesting with my others! Dessie I would be more than happy to receive your little helper's seed packets! I think it's great! Wendy Try some Chai Spice tea, it works wonders in helping clear up colds and flu. I always add a dollop of honey to help sooth the throat. It's a staple in our house and really does help. Alright, here is my take on this.. I can understand how many were hoping that the two swaps would not coincide, but, we all knew there was a fair chance of that happening. For myself, I know that I continued to update my list, even well after Patty's swap's mailing deadline. I did my updates using the same method we did for Patty's swap- using an updated date. Even had I not, I knew there was a good chance the two swaps would overlap. I joined this one knowing full well- according to the guidelines posted for it- that I may NOT receive as many as I sent in. That I would receive as many as were sent in FOR me, up to five packets of the SAME item. I recall there being some issue with this and a member who became very rude in their comments about this fact. Yes, my package from the What's Left swap is in the second batch to go out. No, I did not keep strict record of what I sent to those who were in the What's Left swap. I did keep better records of what I'm sending for this swap. I also know that a lot of people will be sending in baggies of seeds marked as extras- not dedicated for anyone, but to add in when it's seen those items are on someone's list. No, these may not be some of the rarer or more exclusively wanted items on someone's list. But if someone has some of those rarer or more specific items to share, I'm sure they would have put them into your baggie before they mailed. So, I don't see that anyone would be missing out on anything. The only way I could see having updated one's list further as complicating Patty's swap would be if someone had removed things from their list. Updating and adding items would not have conflicted. Because if there were any extras of what you were wanting, Patty would have included them. So, I guess I'm not really understanding how there is such a need to update the lists just because one is in both swaps. If I receive duplicates, wonderful! Because the things on my list are things I want! If I don't receive something on my list, then no one had it to share. If I receive so many of something that I can't plant it all, then I can bless someone else by offering it up for a trade. So, perhaps I'm being dense here, but how would one not receive something sent in specifically for them (up to FIVE packets of the same item!) that was on their wants list in this swap? Everyone has the chance to see your wants as posted and you have had the option to add to that list, as many including myself have this whole time. The only thing I could really see the two swaps happening almost simultaneously possibly affecting would be one's have's list. I'm sorry, I don't mean to upset or offend anyone. I'm just honestly trying to understand why this is such an issue. So please don't take this as meaning to offend or as pointed to anyone in particular. This is just me trying to understand why so many are upset about this. If you prefer to email me privately and help me understand it, I would be pleased with that and please do! Perhaps there are aspects and issues with this that I'm not readily seeing and should consider. I don't want to keep the thread off track by my question becoming a debate here. Perhaps there can be some adjustments of dates if this swap happens in the late summer or again next winter, but for this year it is as it is and personally, I'm really enjoying it! Nancy, I hope you don't decide to drop out, because I know that I should have at least a couple of things from your list, perhaps more. But I'll respect your choice and be your Garden Buddy either way :) Fran, you have a real job ahead of you and I don't know how those like you and Patty do it! Leave me hosting my "pair em up and let em go" or true RR type swaps! I think those of you that host this kind of swap are awesome! Angela, you have been a wonderful help to Fran and all of us in this swap! I know the time it can take to code pages like that, though updates are easier once the initial work is done, and I want to say THANK YOU for the time and work you are putting in on this swap for everyone's benefit! You can track a package all you want; it does not mean the actual recipient received it. Last year there was a lot of thefts of holiday packages that were left on doorsteps. Hub has one niece that I've sent things to; & I kick myself for sending what I did. It was a fairly expensive comforter set; my daughter changed her room; it was still in great shape; I was going to store it to use in the guest room. The niece got kicked out & needed stuff; so I sent a huge care package. The tracking receipt says it was delivered; she says she never got it & she wasn't interested in finding out what happened to my package. About a year before the package incident; this same niece visited us for 3 weeks with her child. She had begged us to visit for a few years; we finally had a house large enough that she could visit. I spent a lot of money between plane tickets & clothing for the baby. She was here 2 days & miserable; wanting to go home because she missed her new boyfriend. She made me regret bringing her here & when she left; was not appreciative of anything we did for her. We did not hear from her for close to a year. Giving a gift should come from your heart; we give because we want to; it makes me feel good when someone appreciates that gift. We usually pick someone in need to give to each Christmas (back when we could afford to).. One year hub & I gifted a brother & sister that is friends with my son. They left CA to move back to NJ & were feeling down that they were not going to be with family for the holiday; so we invited them over & had gifts for them. The smiles on their faces still warm my heart 6 years later. I've also bought a $700 car for another friend of my sons when hub was 1st diagnosed with cancer. I felt this hard working mom needed a break after losing her car to a freak accident. She was going to save her money & give the car back to me for my daughter. She seemed appreciative at 1st & actually stopped speaking to us (we've known her for a long time) when I could not lend her over $3,000 for her electric bill. I found out she did not take care of the car either & when she killed it; her parents helped her buy a newer car. I've had experience where some people really do not appreciate something nice done for them & it really kills me that I could have given my gift to someone who really needed it that would appreciate it. It does not make me a bad person to "want" a thank you; no matter if it's words; a hug; or even seeing something I've given being worn a lot such as the hoodies we bought the brother & sister.

A buddy of mine is using a micro hydro for backup power. When their power goes out he opens up the gates on a holding pond. The flow drives the hydro and powers his house and studio. He can get about 30 hrs from it before the pond gets down too low. I'm not sure if he's using a Turbulent system or not. He says that overall it's not overly efficient because it uses a lot more power to refill the holding pond than it generates but it's worked well for him. He's slowly deploying more solar so hopes that will take him mostly off-grid in a year or two. Yes, your buddy definitely has a problem... ETA: Do whatever you want, you have obviously picked your side in this debate and are out to discredit other sides. The problem being that your argument is largely selective and tangential. Saving generators from landfills with batteries... Great job, since the environmental impact of battery production is exponentially worse for the environment than almost any other product you might use in your home. Every pound of battery produces about 450 pounds of toxic materials just in the mining process, while production into batteries produces more than double that. Photovoltaic cell production is nearly as bad. If you want to be off grid, just because you don't want to deal with the power company that is fine. But if you are doing these things to be green, then putting micro-hydro generators on ponds that are not fed by natural streams is destructive and silly. Powerwalls and poorly utilized micro-hydro generators, like many other green technologies, are too often done because people want to show off their green toys.

@pinkmountain, Here's an example of what kinds of things a listening advertising device can do. Today, I was having a casual conversation with some friends in the dining room where my now unplugged and vacant echo device is. I mentioned the irony and my disgust at how much pornography is on the Internet when compared to other great information which is also there. I remarked that I didn't understand where people got the time to mess around with all that, relating an experience I had with a class where the teacher was trying to demonstrate the value of the (at the time) new feature of video streaming, and most of what he was finding while casually nosing around, was pornographic. Later when talking more about the dumbing down of our culture, I remarked how awful I thought the movie "Book Club" was and how ridiculous I thought the plot premise was, that such accomplished mature professional woman would be interested in that book, and then went on to talk about how silly I thought S&M was in general, giving a scathing opinion of my reaction to renting the movie, "The Secretary." Now, with the algorithms world we live in, had my device been on, at some later point, I would have seen ads for porn and S&M "accoutrements" showing up somewhere in my feed. In fact, it will probably happen now that I have posted this on this board. I'm trying to see that quality input gets to my brain, and I really dislike the burden of having to work so hard to filter out the garbage. This is all a bit backwards to me. You admit that the internet contains a wealth of information - you do realize that each and every time you search for anything online or do any sort of activity on the internet it's stored, don't you? (I'm assuming you do, based on you later mentioning that it'll probably show up somewhere due to your posting here.) So you realize the magnitude of the wealth of information on the internet and you obviously use it so you're okay with all of your information being out there/data being collected but you unplugged your Echo because you don't like the idea of it collecting your data the same way the internet does? I will say that I find it quite ironic that you're so worried about a device listening to conversations you're having - the same conversations that you just shared with a bunch of strangers on the internet, in detail. I'm trying to see that quality input gets to my brain, and I really dislike the burden of having to work so hard to filter out the garbage. You also realize this garbage you speak of is garbage you created, don't you? You're the one having these conversations, which is telling the device that these are topics you're interested in, so it suggests things based on that. If you weren't interested in this "garbage", you wouldn't be having in-depth conversations or such strong opinions about them, and then later sharing it all with strangers on the internet. You mention algorithms so you evidently know how the internet and advertising works. In translation, this should mean that you understand that it's collecting data that you're providing in order to provide a more customized experience for you. If you stop being interested in and having conversations about this so-called "garbage", then you won't have work so hard to filter it out. It's a pretty simple concept. But let's not beat around the bush here. This statement should actually read "I only want to see information that 100% agrees with my opinion and I dislike having to filter out anything that doesn't." I just can't get over the irony of someone who is so paranoid about a device listening to them and "spying on them" posting such negative and judgmental viewpoints to a bunch of strangers, who may also have opinions unlike a device. And these topics are so first worldesque and the tone of superiority just staggers me. For what it's worth, I think narrow-mindedness, lack of perspective, and a focused & cynical concern with what everyone else is doing with their lives when it has no interference with yours does a far better job of demonstrating the dumbing down of our culture than any of the things you mentioned. The internet contains so much great information, you ought to utilize it to get some perspective.

have you considered an android tablet they are much cheaper and do everything and more, I have the Pandigital Novel tablet/ereader. Prices are great on them. There is a 7" and a 9" version I have the white 7" version and absolutely love it. I can read, download books, watch videos, play my music, view my pictures, surf, email pretty much all I do with my netbook or pc. Love that it has android so no worries about infection.

I got mine several months ago for just over $100 Since it uses epub format natively it is very easy to find books including from the library, there are apps for other readers too. It does have built in wifi so you can jump on wireless networks easily.
We have had many discussions about these over on computer help since many of us bought them.

I was just at the hair salon using mine while waiting and one of the gals came over to see it, she had just got the new ipad and loved my PDN she said she would have bought it had she known about it because the size is much easier to carry and handle, and of course the price.

Raven-I am checking out the links now.... you can read Kindle, Nook, and Google books on yours? That is my issue with the Kindle and Nook... they do not accommodate each other's apps. Seems like the Nook will accommodate Google books but Kindle will not.

This seems to be similar to the whole Blue-Ray DVD debate that went on for a while. I didn't have to deal with that one because I don't watch enough movies to worry about it but Eric and I read LOTS! Plus, I like the idea of textbooks being electronic- which is another VERY pricey reason to make sure I can use all file formats.

I do not care about accessing the Internet on the thing. Just want a "traveling library". LOL

There is a free (and very trustworthy) application available on the Internet, called Calibre that will convert Google books into the proper format to be read on a Kindle.

with android you have a ton of apps you can get to use just like on smart phones and there is a kindle app, a nook app, pretty much every ereader platform has an app that can be added to use. The first versions of the PDN could not but they have put out new firmware that makes it able to use a lot of the apps and also has access to the market for lots of apps, and android is associated with google so it is very google friendly.

and yes calibre is an excellent program I think everyone that uses any ereader should have calibre it does a lot of neat stuff. There is also a linux based version of calibre too.

Janie keep in mind that wiki link is quite old and no one has bothered to update it with the many many newer versions of readers and tablets on the market now. So don't base a lot on it.

this is a very very fast changing market so for what is available now you can look at some of these articles and keep in mind it will be different by next month.
