Season 2 Doc Martin...great!

I just finished the last episode of season 2. It is so fun to watch. Very different from American series, many of which I also like. There's no laugh track, the scenery is gorgeous. I am so glad to have found this.

Thank you, Tammy! The photos you posted here do appear to be two, distinct roses. It's quite possible they could be very similar and are probably sister seedlings from the same cross. You know how similar siblings can be. Your Grumpy photos here appear to have fewer but wider petals. Doc appears to have more, smaller, "frillier" petals like the one I purchased from Sequoia many years ago does. When my Doc is grown in a cooler, damper climate than mine, it appears more like the photos on HMF where the flowers are larger, darker pink with a more pronounced white center. I've not grown Grumpy. I had Dopey once and enjoyed how it quickly turned from dull, dark red to deep green, but it didn't flower long enough in my climate. When I sought to obtain the best blooming ones, I was advised Doc and Bashful are the two which flower earliest, longest and latest in the heat. Don't have a Lancetilla, but I also believe they are like many of the top varieties, which are excellent tasting. Currently growing: Cushman, Glenn, Kent, Nam Doc Mai (2), Graham, Dot, Bailey's Marvel, Van Dyke, Edwards, Mallika (2), Cogshall, Florigon, Po Pyu Kalay, Rosigold, Phillippine, Carrie, Ta Rob Nok, Keitt, Valencia Pride. A few haven't done well since the hurricanes 3 years ago, I may replace them next spring if they don't improve quick. Most top varieties are wonderful if harvested correctly. Almost all of mine are still too small to produce, BUT, if they get fruit on in winter, I'll let it stay on to prevent further flowering, and make a decision on whether to let some ripen in spring. I'm more conservative than most on letting the tree attain size before allowing one into production. Go mangos! Gary

I have 4 young mango trees here: a Lemon Meringue, a Gary, a Choc Anon, and a Kent. The Kent and the Lemon Meringue are the biggest at 8-10 feet tall and both set a bazillion fruits this year. The Lemon Meringue in particular started flowering in early February, because of our mild winter. Then all those cold fronts came through in March! I had at least a dozen fruits that survived the initial shedding, but the extended drought and extended cold did in all but THREE of those fruits! (I lay the blame on those cold fronts because it was immediately after each front that I would find more cast-off fruit on the ground.) I was crushed. The Kent mango is my biggest tree, easily 10 feet tall now. It brought several fruits into the 3-5 inch size, but is still shedding one or two a week, and I probably only have about 6 left -- bummer!!! Fortunately, the very uncharacteristic rains we got in the heart of our dry season (April) seem to have spurred a whole new set of bloom, and the tree is now loaded up with lots of green "pearls" of new baby fruits! Next year, especially if our winter is dry again, I'm going to try to keep water away from my Lemon Meringue mango in particular. I got to worrying about a bunch of trees due to the drought and made the mistake of watering heavily one week in January. It was within a week or two of that that the Lemon Meringue burst into bloom. I'll try not to make that mistake again. Good luck with the mangoes!

Charleslou23, Nam Dok Mai's are the 2nd or 3rd largest mango export from this area, all sold as cooking mangos. (KP's are the major export and R2E2's either 2nd or 3rd.) Also in the Asian markets here they're sold as cooking mangos. And all the agricultural notes put out on them categorise them as cooking mangos. Of course, any mango can be cooked, and any mango can be eaten raw/fresh, depending on personal tastes. I also know people who eat raw green mango dipped in soy sauce. There's no accounting for taste. I did actually try a fully ripe Nam Dok Mai (off my own trees) but it didn't appeal to me. I prefer one I have called Strawberry mango, but I don't know if that is an official variety name or not. The other really good one is an unnamed variety which the previous owner of my place developed but never registered. So there's only one tree of that, at my place. But I still eat and enjoy other varieties of mango as well.

I'm still on Season 1, but I like it too. I watch it on Netflix, and sometimes I pause the action just to stare at the scenery.

Do you watch Midsomer Murders? Different English scenery, but just as beautiful.

Alisande, I am saving Midsomer Murders viewing for later. It was a choice between the two of them when I started. It is such a joy to watch sequentially and not have to wait for the production and tv schedule.

I'm a convert also. I watched the whole 4 "serieS". The British seem to have very short seasons, 4-7 shows vs US series, which sometimes have 20 per season. I hope Netflix will make the next series available soon. I'm also a convert to Downton Abbey. I have 1 or 2 shows yet to watch. I love Netflix.

DH and I have enjoyed so many UK series. Our library has almost everything we wanted on DVD. I can't even remember what season we're on with "New Tricks".

If you like "Doc", you might like "Reggie Perrin" (with Martin Clunes).

I've enjoyed the "Downton Abbey" series. However, we just watched Season Two, Episode 6, and I'm sorry to say it is starting to feel like a daytime soap. Our spinal-injury hero is evidently about to regain use of his 'nether parts', and we've had a case of *amnesia* in the plot. Oh, puhleese! This isn't up to the high standard of the story line thus far -- although The Lady and the Chauffeur is a trite cliche.

I really enjoy W & M too, though sometimes I wonder why Mary is always so crabby. I think it's very well done.
