Ultimate Horrible Painting Day - Please Answer! Help.

OMG I am so sore head to toe - I have been painting like crazy all last night and all day today only to completely hate the results. Did I mention I am painting cabinetry so it is a massive understaking!

So I was looking for a cream color - got a yellow color - it looked terrible! Oh did I also mention it is oil paint - hate it...never use the stuff again.

So I have an oil based primer and I just went and primed over all my work to remove the yellow (I could have cried!).

Here is my question.

If I primed with an oil primer does that mean for my next color it has to be oil paint or can I put latex paint over an oil primer?

On Colorsplash yesterday they said you can put an oil over a latex, but never a latex over an oil. Sorry! Maybe others will have some suggestions for you.

Hello stompoutbermuda, This is really quite a coincidence as I rarely visit the landscaping forum, but just happened upon it a couple of days ago. From what I can see of the mountain range in your pics, and I could be wrong, but it appears as though we are practically neighbors. :-) If so, I live in the neighboring town maybe 7 or so miles east of your location. I agree with the poster who said you've got a 'diamond in the rough' there. I'm in my 50's and have lived in this area for nearly 40 years, and have seen many a beautiful desert oasis built in the area where it appears you are. :-) Not being a fan of snakes either, lol, I feel safe to say that in the many years I've spent in the high desert, and many hikes out in the desert, I have seen rattlesnakes as many times, or less, than I can count on one hand. They are shy creatures, not aggressive, and while dangerous, they are an important part of the desert community. We would be overrun with rodents otherwise. And I also agree with the poster who said king snakes, roadrunners and hawks are natural predators who help to keep the rattlers at bay. I'm afraid it's a waste of money, effort and time to try to create a snake proof fence. Your best bet is to accept that they are a part of the community - walk with loud but cautionary steps around hiding areas where they may be, and carry a long stick with you if you need to poke around in an area which may be a hiding place for them. If I may offer a few suggestions, for what they are worth...? :-) Line your fence line with oleanders and cypress. Both are drought and wind resistant, are green all year round, and the oleanders offer beautiful and colorful blooms this time of year. Yes, oleanders are poisonous, but one would have to actually consume many leaves, or breathe the fumes of burning plants to be in danger. Many, many homeowners in this area have oleanders on their fence line for a windbreak, and I have yet to hear of anyone becoming sick as a result of them. I've raised two children here in the high desert and now have several grandchildren enjoying the slow pace and beautiful sunsets over the Sierras. :-) As far as gardening, there is no reason why you can't realize your dream of having a productive garden. I say this as I just went outside and picked several ripe and juicy tomatoes from my plants. I visit gardenweb often and lurk, but I believe this is my first post as it pertains to something I actually know a little something about. LOL. Oh boy do I feel for you! We had the same situation in our downstairs guest bathroom. This small room had all four walls covered in thick mud that a diyer with no experience had tried to texturize with saran wrap or a plastic baggie. Adding insult to injury, they painted the whole room in what can only be described as a Baby Sh** brown that was so dark it made the room look even smaller than it already was. My idea (and I've since been told by 2 other contractors that I was right) was to install new drywall by either tearing out the old and starting fresh or by doing a lay over on top of the old drywall. Unfortunately, the guy I was using at the time was not thrilled with that idea and preferred to sand it instead, giving me a price that was 2/3's the cost of drywalling it. Well he underestimated how much sanding there really was, and as it turned out, it took him THREE DAYS to finish just the sanding. I have never seen so much dust, it was everywhere. But when he finally finished it was still so uneven he had to even it out with several thin layers of mud. While the end result is good enough for government work, I believe the results would have been much better if we had gone with my original plan. Especially in the corners where it was hard to sand, they look pretty sloppy to a knowing eye. If you decide to sand it, be prepared for a lot of dust, be sure to close off all the entry ways cause it travels everywhere! And don't be surprised if you will need to finish it with at least a couple of coats of mud. But don't just assume that's your only option. Get quotes for both methods, my new contractor said it would have run pretty close for him in price. Even if it's more to drywall, if you can afford to go that route, I would recommend you do so because you'll definately have a better result. Don't get discouraged, keep your thoughts on the end result, it will all be worth it when it's done and good luck!

cjhwillis, First off, I would like to point out that while a Doberman or a Rottie may not be a "Bully Dog" most people certainly consider them one. I work with a local Bully Breed rescue and trust me, any large mean looking dog is considered a Bully Breed by the general public. Point made since you are the first one to dispute this classification! :-) Also, when I was naming all the large breeds you mentioned I was doing so because the OP had stated that all dogs large enough to kill should be eradicated!!!!!! In addition, the Doberman also comes from Great Dane descent. There are also many, many dogs that have these different descents. I don't agree that because a breed has a bully breed in its descent that makes it a bully breed. Which brings me to my next point, (since we are getting down to specifics) you are misinformed on what technically is a Bully Breed. Mastiffs are one of the oldest breeds of dog dating back to Aristotle, Philip the Second, Alexander the Great, etc. / 400 - 300 B.C. Too many breeds to list have Mastiff in their ancestry. The only Mastiff that is considered a Bully Breed is the Bull Mastiff coming from a Mastiff and Bulldog descent. A bully breed has all to do with being of Bulldog descent, not Mastiff. Bulldogs were originally bred to fight Bulls in the Arena (hence their name) and was developed in the 13th century. Yes, they are of Asiatic Mastiff descent yet, as I mentioned, Mastiffs are one of the oldest breeds and there are too many dogs to list that are of their descent. Also, in your list of bully breeds you seemed partial to large breeds. You forgot to list the Boston Terrier which was originally called the Boston Bull and is from English White Terrier & English Bulldog descent. Avg. size 15 - 20 lbs. Also, the French Bulldog whose descent is from the Chincha Bulldog. Avg size is 22-28 pounds. Breeds that are classified as Bulldog Breeds (Bully Breeds) are as follows: Boxer, English Bulldog, Old Englishe Bulldogge, Amercian Bulldog, French Bulldog, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, Valley Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Bull Mastiff, and Banter Bulldogge. You had listed the Cane Corso Itailiano as a Bully Breed, this breed is of direct descent of the Canis Pugnax (Roman Mollosian), no Bulldog in this breed. "I'm just incredulous that the police didn't think getting punched in the nose is not assault simply because the victim avoided a broken nose" YEP. I am actually more pissed about it, the more time that goes by. I don't really know what BM said to the police because they talked to me inside and she was out in the driveway. I know she was claiming I HIT HER first which pisses me off because I didn't hit her AT ALL. I covered my face with my hands and ran! LOL. Even SS saw everything that happened and was screaming/crying at his mom to not hurt me. TRUST ME, as loyal as he is to her, if I had hit her, he would have been yelling at ME. But according the cops--it's a "domestic issue" and they told me it's always he said/she said. It also made me angry because one of the cops (there were, like 6 or 7 of them) said "well, if she is so drunk, why'd you let her in the house?" UGH. I let her in and didn't call the police to avoid a SCENE like the one we had! Granted, in hindsight, I shouldn't have let her in--but she was sobbing at the backdoor and then SS SAW her. :( It all worked out really badly. I did the best I could under the circumstances. That one cop was kind of rude to me, I thought, but the others were all pretty nice. The last one to leave did tell me that I have 6 months to press charges. He didn't really say I should or shouldn't, but just said it was an option but that in domestic situations, it is hard to get anything to stick. I am angry the police were not more helpful to ME. MY house, MY driveway, MY yard--she's DRUNK, and I'm SOBER, taking care of two children. Let's see.....who is in the wrong here?

You can put a latex over an oil, but have to first put Kilz as a binder so the latex will adhere.

Oh, how infuriating for you!
I know just what you mean...we used a gorgeous ivory inside our house, and I wanted the same color outside. I came home the first day of finish coating, and the side of my house was yellow! I made my darling painters come right down off the ladders! They mixed the color half and half with white, and it was perfect,
Some oil primers are designed to hold either oil or latex paint. The reason that latex shouldn't be painted over oil paint is that it won't adhere, and forms a rubbery film that peels off.
Ask your paint store what your primer is good for. And if it won't hold latex, I think you have to bite the bullet, or the results will drive you nuts when it starts to peel.
Having said that, ask your question on the paint forum. Things are changing so fast in the paint world that there may be a product that will do what you need it to do without sending you 'round the bend!

My dh, paint expert, says it is no problem to use latex over oil primer, in fact, that is the proper way to do it. Good luck with your project.

Haley I can't help with answers, but I'm glad you have what it takes to go ahead and do it again after such a horrible painting day. I hope it is beautiful for you, the next time.

Maybe eat some chocolate bunnies, chocolate is a wonderful panacea.

I'm painting a dining room built in this week, and an experienced painter told me to use an oil primer under the latex paint. So I know it can be done.

Yes, you can use latex paint over an oil primer.

On the other hand I have used latex paint directly over oil-based enamel---w/out a primer, w/out a problem, BUT you have to carefully sand every inch to remove ALL the gloss of the oil-base paint. But you're supposed to do that anyway for a smooth job.

You can put latex over oil, but it would be wise to sand it lightly first.

If the oil is gloss (is it?) you will have to sand it very well, or else use a chemical deglosser, so the latex will have a surface to bind to.

Thanks everyone for your input - your all so great!

Well I took the plunge last night and repainted everything again till the weeeeeee hours of the morning and it looks so nice now.

So I am happpy to say that the latex paint over the oil based primer worked wonderfully and adhered to a strong finish.

My ridicous ugly yellow cabinets are now a beautiful bone ivory!

Boy cabinetry is not a paint job you want to get the color wrong on I tell ya!

Will post pics in a day or two once the finishing touches are done.

Latex PAINT over Oil-PRIMER is...
Just fine.

Especially on exteriors...it's a preferred method.

If "Pro's" are saying NO to latex over oil PRIMER...they're no "Pro"...
* Almost EVERY Oil primer says Latex is fine on top.
However >>>>> If it's a GLOSS Oil, it HAS to be sanded to "dull" the sheen, and create a surface-profile for new Latex.
* Preferably though...SAND the Oil paint to dull; Prime with EITHER Oil or Latex; then PAINT with Latex topcoats.

At our store...we can't afford to give bad advice.
We go thru hundreds & hundreds & hun....... of gal's/year.

The key word here is PRIMER not paint. Primer is primer, paint is paint, two different things. My DH has never heard of a primer with a sheen, he says thats the paints job. DUH!

My DH comes from a painting family. Been in business for over 50 years. So I'm hoping that FIL and DH have learned SOMETHING over the years. LOL

Who was talking about a "primer with a sheen"?
I again state that you don't need a primer between oil & latex paint IF you sand off all the gloss/sheen of the old oll-based paint. Saved me one extra "paint" (however you want to define the word) coating job. I have a whole house, including a kitchen which I often wash down, using that exact method.

In spite of the extra work, I still much prefer an oil-base paint finish, but bcause its white yellows, I only use it when I paint with colors.

Yep, exactly right. My dh has been in the paint biz for 32 years both as painter and manufacturer's rep and that is the recommended way.
