There's lots of college team fabrics available. If you used some of that, along with matching solid colors and black polar fleece or minky for the backing it should make a pretty nice and 'manly' quilt.

I've also seen some patterns for other computer games like Super Mario Bros.

I've made denim quilts for guys, and I think the bear paw quilt block is masculine. Most any of the traditional patterns can be used, I think it is the fabric choice you need to be more careful of.

The disappearing 9-patch quilt pattern is simple, quick and easy to make. There are several tutorials on the web for them - this is pretty good.
I sent my son off to college with an Amish Roman stripe quilt - made with black and every shade of solid stripes. It's an oversized twin - at 25 he still cuddles with it on the couch but now has a queen size bed.

When I gave my two teenaged g'kids quilts for Christmas I pondered the same thing about my g'son's quilt. I ended up making him a flannel-backed denim rag quilt. He uses it on his bed all the time and he says he loves it. I was so relieved. LOL.

I just finished the top for a Trip Around the World with dark colors. Not girlie at all, I don't think. This is easy to make, but having trouble with Photobucket, so can't post a pic at the moment. Maybe later.

I like to use plaids for quilts for men/boys - I've made 3 plaid quilts and have more in my future.

Traditional blocks I favor are Shoo Fly, Flying Geese, Bear's Paw, Bow Tie, and others I have forgotten.

Is this for him to use on his dorm bed? College colors are good, and maybe a non traditional pattern. More than likely, it's going to be a big jumbled pile at the end of his bed most of the time anyway. lol That's what I saw in most of the dorm rooms I passed by when I visited dd. However, there was one comforter they kept in the "living area" of the suite that everyone wanted to wrap up in because it had flannel on one side.

Put a solid backing on it and if he thinks it's too girly, he can turn it over.

No, no Marti8a, this quilt is one I made for my daughter, but thought some of the colors would be boy/manly enough for Monicatx's grandson's dorm.
