iPod application: Fabric Stash

Has anyone else used the iPhone application called Fabric Stash? I just downloaded it today. You can take a picture of the fabrics in your stash, sort them by color ot type, and assign them to projects. Its a neat way to keep track of what you have and what you want to shop for. It may take months to get a photo of everything though!

Kate, although I don't have an I-phone, if I did, I'm afraid that I would not live long enough to get my fabric stash entered. lol

I read this post to my husband. Notice I did NOT refer to him as "dear". He would like to know if your husband would like to join his fledgling group, the NQHA - the National Quilter's Husband's Assocation [he claims it is "kind of a survival group"]. He believes he is being funny. But I think it is a way for him to end up in an early grave. He says there will be collections for "relief effort" ... I don't know why he feels he needs relief. What the heck is that???

Annual dues are "whatever is left after the wives spend all our money on fabric. It won't be much. We might have to resort to pop cans".

Yeah, I'm livin' the dream.

Umm, oh, well, I won't be using that anytime soon, LOL. I still have a very difficult time remembering to take my old very basic, cell phone when I go out.

Yes, flooring is what I do for a living. The 'linoleum metal edge' manufacturers went out of business many years ago. NY Metal mouldings was one of the leading distributors. Randall Manufacturing out of Newark NJ bought up most of the left over stock and I think some of the manufacturing capabilities, but I am not entirely sure that the later is true. However, I am very surprised that the product has disappeared altogether and left vinyl and linoleum end users without suitable edge products to use, other than those ugly applied-after binder bar things. I bet 1/8" metal moldings are available in Europe. The ceramic edge profiles I am talking about are not made of ceramic materials at all, but are 'large' versions of what we had commonly available in aluminum, steel and brass for linoleum and vinyl to finish door and stairnose edges. The reason I suggest them is that you could adapt these extrusions for use in a stepdown, such as you have. You would have to look at what's available and then design the product into your project. It can be as simple as cutting something off the profile to make it work...inseting the profile in your substrate...applying the profile to the 'riser' portion of your stepdown and building up that surface so the vinyl would meet almost flush to the metal. This can take some hard thinking, but it is not impossible to do. Since almost everything else being manufactured today seems to come from China, why do we not see suitable metal edge profiles coming from there? I don't attend the Surfaces flooring convention, so I don't know what is being offered as manufactured looking for distribution...there must be some somewhere. All I know is that I have not come across any suppliers recently and the only stuff I do see is my own personal stash for my special flooring needs. I heard rumours that there is a marketing place in San Francisco (or somewhere in California) called 'linoleumtown'...or something like that. It is a group of stores selling linoleum and other sheet and vinyl products and I bet there'd be a good chance of finding something there. Good luck.

mommabird, that's kind of what I was thinking. It seems like when a project comes up, so often what it is on hand, is not what would work best. Often I end up out shopping for something more appropriate. Especially now that much of the sewing is done for a child, the fabrics should look modern, and even many fabrics that are only a decade old, look like fabrics from a decade ago. Since I don't do much of this anymore, compromising and using second best fabric does not sit well. Same thing with some of the yarns, particularly ones that were sent this way after my grandmother died. Most are really beautiful wool yarns, but wool is hard for me to work with, and the colors are not right. Part of me thinks I should just let them go, but then again, they are some nice yarns... I did go through a few months back and got rid of anything that didn't hold up well (faded in the wash, wore prematurely, etc), as well as smaller scraps that I couldn't imagine finding a use for. My mother was one who kept even the tiniest scrap declaring that it could be used in doll clothes or to make a doll quilt- great but that is not how I want to spend my limited time! I've got to break that influence that all resources are resources to be kept and used. Thanks for the feedback, I'm excited to get started going through this stuff, but fearful that I will freeze up and just put it all back away!

Curtain ideas needed please; limited fabric

I want to thank each of you for the responses and wonderful ideas. Please keep them coming! I'm going to weigh each idea against the amount of fabric I have. I have two windows to dress; these curtains are going to be temporary "summer" curtains. The north window is 38x52. The west window is 53x54; my bed is directly under this window. There's no other way to arrange the small room. I have 4 5/8 yards, 58" wide, of the floral print, and 4 yards, 58" wide, of the stripe. I originally bought the fabric for a 3/4 bath at our last home. I intended to make a Roman shade and valance for the small window; a shower stall curtain, and a "skirt" for the circa-1952 wall-hung sink. I never got them made, obviously, and now we live in our own house with a black/white/red bathroom. Nana 2010 The paint is a Pittsburgh Paints color, "Safari." It's from their Ultimate Style "Creative" collection. It does not look anything like the dull chip shown on their site. It's a lovely grayed sage with a tiny, imperceptible hint of yellow. It's color 13C-2 Safari. I had it mixed in Dutch Boy's Dimensions paint. I know that's not the "It" paint, but I love it. It goes on easily, wears like iron, and washes beautifully. It holds up like a dream to my Mountain Man hubby and the two hunting dogs that live in the house. Les197 How far below the window trim should the curtain hang to be proper for "apron" length? I want it to look correct, even if they have to be short. I don't want any high-waters! LOL - - - - - I'm at my wits end with these windows. I want (and will eventually make) full-length, black-out, thermal lined, pinch-pleated drapes in a textured sage fabric. The ones I've found for sale aren't worth the price; the sewing quality is awful, and I don't want to pay a custom-made price when I can sew very well myself. Until I get to the cities (Minneapolis area) to visit some "real" fabric stores so I can make my dream drapes, I'm willing to settle for trying to "cut my coat to fit my cloth" with this fabric I already have. It would be happier hanging on the windows than it is hiding in the sewing cabinet.

We moved to a much larger house, so a lot of our rooms are starting from scratch. We also found that pieces that worked well in certain rooms in the old house just didn't work in the new house, so I had to look at everything differently. I'm kind of low tech, but I'm also easily distracted/overwhelmed/forgetful, so I had to have some sort of system. I start with a notepad, and just brainstorm about the room. Function is always first...what activities are going to happen in that room, and how do I need the room to work for me. Then I measure everything I can think of, the floorplan, windows, spaces between doors, spaces between windows, etc. Then I look at the stash of what we already have, and try and match function to form. Will that chest of drawers be more useful here or there? What can I use for storage that's less than 32" wide? Once I kind of move things around, I can see what's working and what's not, and I'll start a list of shopping needs. I usually come up with a color scheme or feel of the room (retro, vintage, traditional, etc.) at this point. Do I want calm and soothing, or bright and funky? For each room, I take an index card, write down all useful measurements, and a shopping list. I staple any paint chips or fabric samples to the back, and keep them all in a baggie in my purse. That way, when I'm out shopping, I have all of my info with me. I buy a lot of things for our home second hand, so it's not like buying from a catalog or online, where I can just bookmark things and buy them whenever. Having those cards with measurements and swatches with me wherever I go has saved me from buying things that wouldn't work, and has also allowed me to snag some great bargains. Each room also gets an index card with a to-do list. I write down everything that needs to be done, floor to ceiling. For example, one room I'm working on now, I have everything listed from "caulk the window" to "paint bookshelf white." Those cards I keep in a small plastic bin on the kitchen counter. For the to-do list cards, when I have spare time, I can just flip through them, and pick a chore that matches what time I have available.

I admit it, I'm a techno-twinkie. I love the gadgets and the toys. I am addicted to the iPhone and thrilled there are getting to be more applications for quilting.

I'm like Mary--lucky if I remember to 1. take the phone and 2. turn it on. I use it so infrequently that when it rings it takes me a few seconds to process what it is and that it's mine.

Everytime I answer it I hear my husband, "Where are you?" What is it, a tracking device?

I-phone?Cell Phone? I hardly ever use my land phone! Oh, well some of us were born without a phone in our ear. I am from the "lost generation". LOL Jayne

I see your words, but I don't understand... not have your phone on you at all times?!?!? LOL! I am the opposite apparently. But very little of it is about the phone - mostly it's about all the things you use your computer for. And it fits in your pocket!

Before I had the iPhone, I had several devices: a work cell that rings a dozen times a day at least including weekends, my personal cell phone, a digital camera, an iPod for checking email, listening to music and audible books, chatting on forums, contacts, etc. Plus I would spend a couple hours a day at the computer on forums, email, and projects (both for home and work). Now it's down to one device that does everything - phone, computer, camera, project management, games, email, music, books (audible books and text too). It's all here. I even turned off my alarm clock because it does that too! And tracks my Weight Watcher points, AND has the TV schedule, movie times, GPS maps...

When I think of all the stuff I hauled around for business travel, including a laptop that was never as light as these old bones wanted it to be, I can hardly believe I can now do all of that from my 'phone'. It's enough to make me giddy! I'll still carry my briefcase but now it will be full of hand applique work for the BOM project! Ha!

I'm so glad I stopped by to see that recommendation!

Unfortunately, I use an iPod Touch that doesn't have the camera. I'll have to use a separate camera to take the pix and then download the library. A bit of work to look forward to but, still, what a marvelous resource to be able to carry around with me!

Have you discovered BlockTool ? For $4 you can carry around a resource for scaling up or down 100 traditional blocks.

I also just discovered 2 free apps when your post sent me searching for other things I'd been unaware of. QuiltFab2.0 computes borders. And QuiltRef computes blocks set on point.

I have a cell phone I use for emergencies and it stays in my purse.
It seems every time I have needed to use it the battery was going dead LOL!!!!
I have one sis that stays on her cell phone and carries it with her every where she goes. She calls my cell and by the time I get it out of my purse it has stopped ringing. My other sis gave hers to her son.
My degree is technical but I have gotten burned out on all of the gadgets. I would give up the TV before I would my computer though LOL!!!!!!!!

Not a techno-twinkie, but I am a Mac owner - I use a Mac mini and a MacBook Pro, so my question to our resident techno-twinkie is do these apps work on Apple computers?
I should probably know the answer to this question, but I do not and my MacBook Pro would probably sew for me, if I knew how to let it~lol.

I would take years for me to photograph all of my stash. Much easier to just continue to pin notes to things as I put them away.
I'm another one that carries a cellphone more as a tracking device than for actual usage. My grown kids can't believe I don't know how to use my cellphone for anything more than a portable land line. Honestly I'd just as soon shop without the darn thing. Shopping is my time to unwind and get away from EVERYONE. DH claims I either leave it home or forget to charge it because on some level I don't want to stay connected! Well Duh!!!

I didn't have Block Tool but now I do! Thanks! What a great way to alter the size of blocks. I've never seen so many size options.

I have quiltfab and quiltref and use them all the time. When I was doing the hand quilting on my wallhanging before the holidays I used the stitch length diagram constantly to compare against and keep consistent.

I just upgraded from the Touch (w/out camera) to the Phone - it was an early birthday present. It was a refurb purchased from at&t and very reasonably priced. It looks brand new and like it's never been out of the box before I got it. Even more than the camera, I like the map feature. When I was quilt shop hopping yesterday, we had trouble finding one of the new stores. I was able to look them up, click on the location link, and POP! There was a map, with a little moving dot for me and a dot for the store. I didn't even have to call them for directions. I guess I should have known it had that ability but I hadn't used it before. So cool!

I don't know if apps will work on your computer. DH is Mac and I'm PC. I do know that using iTunes you can download audible books, podcasts, etc and play them on the computer, but I don't know about utility apps. Interesting question!

DH just wandered in and I asked him about the apps - he says they have different operating systems and ipod apps will not work on the Mac. Sorry.

I'm probably not supposed to say this here, but since we're talking about it: I have a perfectly good 16MB iTouch with tons of apps already loaded on that I was planning on listing on ebay now that I have the iPhone. If anyone is interested in it, send me an email!

Yeah! How cool is it to have Block Tool available all the time?

I have it as a small book sort of thing. Got that years ago. But what are the chances I'd have it with me when I want it if I'm not at home. Meanwhile, the app is always with me. Gotta love it!

I look forward to getting an iPhone one day but we're not on AT&T (lousy coverage where we are) and we'll have to wait until Verizon or TMobile gets some future version. I have so many useful thing on my iPod (like where is the closest public rest room) but have to rely on WiFi to be able to use them. Phooey!

I got a Droid a month ago. As far as I know, there are no quilt applications, but I do agree with Kate - it is my personal computer, camera, video camera, address book, and oh, by the way it is a phone too!

My DH also has a Droid - he does not use it to its capacity, but it does have many apps and he loves it.

I have to say that I have had a lot of fun reading this thread. I feel like I am from a different universe. I had a cell phone given to us once and ended up giving it a way. I do have a MP3 player to use at the Y!!I agree with Rosa I would be lost without the puter. Jayne

This is real: in the past hour while sitting in my comfy chair in the family room with a cat sitting on my lap I've done all of the following on the iPhone.

Â bought 2 cute jackets on sale at Coldwater Creek
Â took a call from my nephew about a job offer he got today
Â googled the company he got the offer from
Â looked up the tv schedule for tonight
Â set a reminder for the 1st new episode of Lost
Â looked up the recipe for nicoise salad (I said it called for black olives, DH sai it didn't)
Â showed DH a picture I took today of an end table at a thrift shop
Â added a couple more words to a crossword puzzle

Amazing, right? If it came with a flying car or a personal jet pack it would be perfect!

I'd have to have a mega magnifying glass to use my cell phone like a computer, although my kids and grandkids do. DD gave me a new one and I can barely make out the letters on the buttons to text. I don't use it much anyway....DH calls to find me in the store.....I call him to let him know someone wants to talk to him on the landline. lol
