Yes, there was a piece in the NYTimes in the last week or so about the gardens themselves; more specifically, about the woman who has been rebuilding them for the last 15 years. Great story!

What a gorgeous and cheerful home it is. The exterior looks much like Ina Gardner's house in the Hamptons.

Hi everyone, I am a artificial rock contractor (pool and spa) and an expert with specialty concrete mixes - specifically vermiculite which is also commonly known as "pool base". I have read through this thread and there are a few things I wanted to offer some clarity for: 1) The reason that you should pre-water the vermiculite is becasue vermiculite is incredibly absorbant. If you do not pre-water it will leech water from your concrete depriving it of moisture and likely leading to hairline cracking and crazing if the surface layers. The mix itself can still be "dry" as someone eluded above that concrete that is too wet becomes weak. This is extremely true. Pre-watered vermiculite is much easier to proportion and regulate the water in the mix. 2) Soap in concrete mixes is an "air entrainer" as discussed in a post above however soap has long since been used as an ingredient in vermiculite concrete mixes for different reasons. Vemiculite concrete is very sticky and can be difficult to trowel. Adding a tiny bit of soap, like dish soap, makes the concrete smoother and less inclined to cling to the tools. 3) It was posted above that concrete for construction does not get adjusted for water content. This is not true. Concrete is and can be adjusted on the fly in almost every mixing condition to account for changing conditions, heat, direct sunlight, concrete consistency, slump etc. There is a point past which you should not hydrate the mix but before that it is no problem at all to adjust slump. Every single mix through a mixer gets individually watered. Ready mix concrete will ask you if you are happy with the slump of the mix when they arrive to your site and will wet it up if you want them to. 4) Use water reducer to achieve desired placement slump without compromising the strength of the concrete. A tiny bit too much water equals a substantial loss of finished strength. 5) The best release agent for silicone is wax based release agents. In most cases if you are not sure what to use you should use wax based. I hope this info helps some of you out. Yes, the comment about throwing away the pan really cracked me up. As I read the thread I kept wondering how a quick dip in boiling oil was worse than a smash with a rock or shoe. Lots of people used to just use a jar of water for pests and let them drown. This seems rather humane to me. Well except for throwing them at the boys..lol. I didn't respond on that thread either. Your restraint is noticed. Smiles. They probably don't like the parasitic wasps either. Hmmm... wonder if any of them would pick the wasp eggs off and then 'release' the worms to the 'wild'.

Oh Buehl, I have just spent 10 minutes getting all examples into this post to illustrate how many ways I have tried to link into GW from photobucket....Then the thing jumped to the main kitchen page and all my text is gone. This happens a lot to me. Other things that happen are that when I am adding a "link" into the "link" button below, it does not insert the link into the text where my cursor is set. I will try again. When I use the pasting of the photobucket "share link" into the text, like I did before in old GW, they are just text and not hot linked (green). When I link them to the link button below, the link is hot. In addition, when I copy the Photobucket "share link(s)" ("email&IM"; "Direct"; "HTML"; and "URL") into the "link" option below, it auto copies into the upper box of the "Link" option as well as the intended spot for the link in the bottom box. I have to "control"+A to highlight the text in the upper spot so I can delete it, and type in my title to my link. There seems to be a lot going on that isn't working with my Mac OS and Houzz. And there are others. I save all plastic bags and give them to my sister to crochet mats for the homeless. She can use any that's he can cut loops out of including toilet paper ones if you open the ends instead of tearing down the side. I takes 5 or 600 bags to make one mat. she can also use dry cleaning bags, .like I said it would be any cylindrical bags. The mats are 6 ft long and 2 1/2 feet wide and have a carrying handle and loops to hold them together when they carry them. I save bread bags. I use those for all kinds of things. I guess o got that from my DM. I have just started using worn out socks for rags. My DH goes through socks fast. I use single slippers for on my Swiffer. I saved the bottom part of my old litter box and cleaned it up really good and use that for soaking clothes in OXy CLean. I also save twisty ties. I have some of those nut jars too. Mine had fruit in them at the restaurants I cooked at. Here is the big one. I save almost all of the glass jars that I get. I use them for canning. If they have the rubber inside of the lid they work. I like the small ones, so if I want to give something to somebody They don't have to return the jar. I always make pickled beets and give some away. I boil the lids just like I would Kerr or Ball lids and fill the jars and screw them on tight. I had one jar that wouldn't work once because the lid wouldn't tighten. It just kept turning. I just made sure I used that one first. then I threw it away. I also put other things in them

I would recommend watching the original documentary if you ever get the chance. You see the house after it was cleaned out, but Little Edie still dumps Wonderbread into a hole in the wall and a racoon comes out a grabs it. Not an easy movie to watch but interesting.

Palimpsest, I have two documentaries here, Grey Gardens and The Beales of Grey Gardens. I hope to get around to watching them this weekend.

Grey Gardens was made in 1976. Is this the original documentary? The second one, The Beales of Grey Gardens is a follow-up by the same people who did the other documentary which was made in 2006.

About the house. Hmm. Not sure if I like it. I realise it's near the ocean but it's too "beachy" instead of a farmhouse.

And I can't imagine a man wanting to sleep in that girlie girl master bedroom, even though it's beautiful!

well, that was disapointing and rather shocking, first, the poor trees in the first photo, then vertical stripes with all the vertical stair rails feel so caged, florals and chaise lounges at the fireplace feel more like a mortuary than an enjoyable restful place, and what is flourishing in the garden? I feel more depressed seeing the few after photos than I did watching all the befores???

A couple years ago, some of the frequent posters at GW on the antique rose forum had the opportunity to visit there along with touring other gardens in the Hamptons, etc., including Martha Stewart's.

I post these with respect for the beauty and style the Edie's loved and lived. Their minds adapted when they saw no choise. Creativte and imagination never faded for them, the small tunnel from their view was how they survived. Many would have been lost to sea, but not these great ladies. When times got bad, to sing and dance, they drifted further to keep their dream alive, as best they could. I love these lonely left behind ladies... and Eva for lovingly and tenderly preserving their beauty.

Some of the pictures from the post above are from the documentary and how they envisioned the home when "times were good".

I love everything associated with Grey Gardens, but I have a lot of love for Little Edie.

divastyle, thanks for the Getty images, I love seeing more and more. In my search, I have seen beautiful newer photos of the garden and must take back my comments above, the lady gardener that has taken over has done amazing work. I can not change my impression of the house interior tho, I think they completely ruined, destroyed and removed all the life and character it had. It is a wonderful ocean home and should have been respectfully restored as promised.
