Returning an Ebay item

I bought an item thru Ebay last week. I need to return it.

It came with a 14 day money back guarantee (-20% restocking).

The seller has a 100% positive feedback for 49268 transactions.

But it says I need an RMA number to do a return. I requested

one this morning. And got back an email this afternoon

telling me I had to send the request to a gmail address

outside of ebay. Ebay had this little note in the email:

Do not respond to the sender if this message requests that

you complete the transaction outside of eBay. This type of

offer is against eBay policy, may be fraudulent, and is not

covered by buyer protection programs.

I responded anyway but I wonder if that was a good idea.

Here is the entire exchange:

I need an RMA number for this item: #251022246509

I also need the address to return it to.

Payment by PayPal on 3/24/2012

I received this item on 3/29/2012

My Full Name

My Street Address

My City, State, Zip

This bass bridge will not work with my bass.

Thanks.

Did the emails come to you thru ebay?
If I remember correctly, ebay has that do not reply message to all problems in returns.
Just make sure, when you return the item you return it to where ever it was shipped from and do expect to have to pay for the shipping to return it and also expect NOT to be reimbursed for the shipping of the item. I'm sure you will only be reimbursed for your purchase price.
Good luck

I'm not sure what exactly you are concerned about, but if you aren't sure, I'd ask in the help/chat section on ebay or even have them call you to discuss.

You may not necessarily be instructed to send the item back to the same place it shipped from. If you are dealing with a larger company, they sometimes have return warehouse locations. Since you will probably have to pay the shipping and restocking fee, just make sure it's still financially best for you to return it.

That is a very fine quality cloth.....worth hundreds in the right venue.....which is NOT ebay. That panel, I believe is not crochet but drawn work of a very fine quality. Make sure it's clean....wrap it in acid free paper ( actually roll it) and save it for another generation....unless you can get your price.....which should be well over $200. I have never seen linens of that quality offered on ebay....you need to find a collector....or keep it. Linda C

nosoccermom, that's kind of a tough one. If the item is unique and you can't buy it elsewhere, you could try contacting the seller and asking for a Buy It Now price. (You're sure it's not that they are just relisting an identical item, right?) Hard to know how they will react but I don't see what it could hurt. I would write the request carefully so they can't really tell if you're accusing them of shill bidding or not; if they think you are going to report them, they'll probably just block you immediately and move on. How is the rest of their feedback? Sometimes you can look at the detailed feedback other buyers have left to figure out if the seller is above board, or not well behaved. If they react negatively (or if you find bad things in their feedback) and you decide it's a lost cause, then I'd probably contact eBay and report the practice. As far as I know eBay still does not look kindly on this practice at all. However, I don't think there is really a way to force the seller to act like he should (to make sure you can buy the item.)

I feel your pain! This happens to me not just on e-bay, but Craigslist as well. On Craigslist, I will never forget the lovely, LOVELY nightstands that I didn't get to in time. Fabulous curves, vintage paint-- beautiful. They were easily worth (well, by e-bay standards) over $400 for the set . . .they just needed a few touchups. They went for $25 for the PAIR. I was e-mailing the seller (I could not drive over immediately with my 3 children in tow), asking if I could just PayPal her the money right away if she'd hold them. By the evening, they were gone. A gorgeous antique oak dresser . . .it had the most beautiful detailing on the mirror I have ever seen. It was $75. I called the seller the same day it was listed, but he said he had already promised it to someone else. Now, I think in the future, I have to offer more (I did that once with my rug) and they might hold it. I could have easily offered double the asking prices on those items and have gotten off cheap. On e-bay, I saw this lithograph that was very large, in an antique frame, about 100 years old. It was a haunting image. I loved it. Now, I don't like to drive up the price, so I don't bid early, but I had my snip software ready to go. It was selling for a mere $19. GUESS WHAT???? About 2 hours before it was going to close, the seller ended the sale early . . .I guess he saw he was going to lose on it, and that was that. I e-mailed him and he said he was going to relist, but it never happened. So, even with the snipe set up, you can lose! Sometimes it's dangerous . . .

Red, I didn't see your response. Yes it seems a lot of people do like the Priority shipments. I just don't need to pay more to have things here fast. Shipping fees are a drag as it is! I bought from the UK quite a bit a few years ago and they would always ship air, understandably I guess because of the slowness otherwise, and the possibility of things getting lost in a winding transit. But, it was quite a bit more expensive, so I'd go parcel post most of the time. Usually didn't take all that long. Added to insuring items, it just really adds up. And when you haven't even seen the item firsthand, well, it's just a lot of money on extras. Yes, it does look like some of her buyers have noticed the post on the package is quite a bit lower than what they were charged. So she may have thought I was questioning her too. Well, I have no control over her packaging and handling charges, but can request slow mail and no insurance! :) And dang! I did manage to get old. I'm not sure when that happened!

It's worth a try to return it. It was ~$31.
Restocking fee will be ~$6. It costs $3 to ship it.
So if I get $20 back it will be worth it.

Yeah, it's worth the return. Good Luck. I'm pretty sure it will work out ok since they have an ok rep.

But, I wouldn't rule out asking ebay if you have any questions about procedures, etc..
