Returning an Ebay item

I bought an item thru Ebay last week. I need to return it.

It came with a 14 day money back guarantee (-20% restocking).

The seller has a 100% positive feedback for 49268 transactions.

But it says I need an RMA number to do a return. I requested

one this morning. And got back an email this afternoon

telling me I had to send the request to a gmail address

outside of ebay. Ebay had this little note in the email:

Do not respond to the sender if this message requests that

you complete the transaction outside of eBay. This type of

offer is against eBay policy, may be fraudulent, and is not

covered by buyer protection programs.

I responded anyway but I wonder if that was a good idea.

Here is the entire exchange:

Did the emails come to you thru ebay?
If I remember correctly, ebay has that do not reply message to all problems in returns.
Just make sure, when you return the item you return it to where ever it was shipped from and do expect to have to pay for the shipping to return it and also expect NOT to be reimbursed for the shipping of the item. I'm sure you will only be reimbursed for your purchase price.

I'm not sure what exactly you are concerned about, but if you aren't sure, I'd ask in the help/chat section on ebay or even have them call you to discuss.

You may not necessarily be instructed to send the item back to the same place it shipped from. If you are dealing with a larger company, they sometimes have return warehouse locations. Since you will probably have to pay the shipping and restocking fee, just make sure it's still financially best for you to return it.

If the seller has indicated s/he will take a return with a 20% restocking fee, you should be fine. Don't expect him to waive the fee - he is out a sale, plus fees. Send another letter to the seller (should be through the seller's link on eBay so eBay has a record of the exchange) after shipping the hinges back- preferably UPS. UPS will send the tracking number to your and the seller's email addresses through Quantum View- ask for this service. The letter should contain the tracking number for the shipment. It should also contain a statement to the effect that you would like notification when the sales amount of X minus the 20% restocking fee as agreed-upon has been credited to your PayPal/Visa, however you paid it. Also that you appreciate his time, sorry the sale did not work and that you hope to do business with him another time. Always check the box that sends the email to your OWN email address as well- and save all correspondence. If you haven't heard from the seller about 3 days after the package has been delivered, send a pleasant email through eBay again to the effect that you've been notified of delivery and would appreciate credit to your PayPal account within 3 days. Most sellers will have posted credit by then. I'm assuming your DH checked the seller's history and feedback and it's good?

Hi, I purchased a Hotel Collection down comforter from Macy's and then the exact same item from Ebay. The one that arrived from Ebay is nice, but not as nice as the original from Macy's. The tag is the same its just a different lot number. The feel is not as soft, and the cover is not as bright a white. Hm. Do you think it is a fake? If its not a fake, would it be wrong to take the ebay one back to Macy's and keep the Macy's one? I think so, because I am thinking there was something wrong with the one I got from Ebay that it was not as bright and soft. Or could it be that Hotel improved the comforter in 2010 and its an old one? The ebay was supposed to be NWT. My son noticed right away the difference. I am going to try and return the ebay one to the ebay seller.

I wouldn't even count this past week as a working week. She could easily be on vacation and I doubt she expected you to return personalized material so quickly via priority mail. (Why did you pay extra for priority -that may actually be holding up your credit - she may have been planning on issuing you shipping credit too but when you sent it back a priority she may not know how much or what amount is fair to credit you). Was the "priority" shipping charge substantial? Sellers send out stuff priority because buyers are waiting for it; but for returns that aren't seasonal, and especially those that are personalized, using priority is probably just a waste. I believe all that priority does is speed up the shipping time for an extra cost. Anyway, I'd give it until Tues or Wed and then follow up if she doesn't respond by then. You may want to note that you expect to pay the shipping charges especailly considering the product really wasn't really incorrect or grossly misrepresented per se.

It's worth a try to return it. It was ~$31.
Restocking fee will be ~$6. It costs $3 to ship it.
So if I get $20 back it will be worth it.

Yeah, it's worth the return. Good Luck. I'm pretty sure it will work out ok since they have an ok rep.

But, I wouldn't rule out asking ebay if you have any questions about procedures, etc..
