Do You Ever Get A Craving?

The other day I was so hungry for a Twinkie! I probably haven't had one in two years. So today I went grocery shopping and guess what? I didn't buy a Twinkie. How about you any food cravings out there?

ha...No, not pregnant. So that's out of the question. Odd thing, when I was pregnant, I can't remember craving anything...not pickles nor ice cream, same old foods without anything unusual. I keep milk in the refrigerator...just in case...The craving for it was like what some people say about water...(Which I don't like)..."Nothing quenches the thirst like water'...Maybe I needed the water and got it from the milk(?)...

Yes, I think that a so-called furnace serviceman tried to con me into a new furnace one time. I had a gas furnace that had given 10 years of trouble free service, but had become unrelaible because the pilot light began to go out. I saw an ad in the newspaper from a local dealer that advertized 'free' furnace inspection. They were looking to book work suposedly where needed. it was a established dealer. I bit. I made arrangements for the inspection. The serviceman informed me that the heat exchanger probably was cracked and fan was blowing out the light. He said that my furnace was bad and needed replacing. It was true that my furnace had come from a batch in which the heat exchanger did crack in a few, but his story was suspicious. If the fan was blowing the pilot light out, the light would not have stayed lit for 2 to 3 days. I asked if there was a way to inspect the heat exchanger. I was there when he did the work and I knew he had not seen my heat exhanger - it was not visable. To see it, one had to dissemble the outer shrouding. I had looked at that possibility before and decided it was a big job and that an expert coujld do it faster than me. He said, yes, he could gain a view of the heat echanger by cutting a big hole in the outer covering. (Yeah right, cut a big hole that could ruin the furnace.) Before I permitted him tp cut open the furnace, I asked how he would close it up afterward. He mumbled something and essentially said that I could patch it. (My suspicious mind hoisted a big red flag. Either this guy did not know how to do the job, maybe was mystified, or was bent on making a big mess out of my fuenace.) I said no, I needed to think about it a bit and he went on his way. I had tried replacing the thermocuple to no effect. It seemed that the thermocouple was not getting enough heat and allowed the valve solenoid to drop out. I had tried to adjust the size of the pilot light and found that I could not make it any larger. There was an adjustment on the gas valve to set the flame size, but the flame could not be made bigger. I shut the gas off and began to search for the problem and found it. Inside the fitting that held the pilot jet was another restrictor in the form of a disk with a small hole. Its purpose was to limit the maximum size of the pilot flame. Over the years, deposits had built up nearly closed the hole. The orifice was carefully cleaned, parts reassenblied and eveything worked fine. That was over 10 years ago, and all is well to date. I concluded that the 'inspector' was either a con man or did know know his business. Anyone familar with gas furnaces should have suspected what the problem might have been.

Do you Crave Antiques?

Love the first pattern, Jan. Yes, yes and yes. I am very drawn to old pieces. I only have a few "new" pieces and they have patina. Made to look old things. I only buy vintage or antique accessories. I use family things when/where I can. Mom has told me to come go through a few drawers - can't wait. It was confirmed by an astrologist that I have an "old soul." I think that's part of the reason, if not the reason, I am drawn to things with history. I'm a big toucher when shopping antiques. I love running my hand across the top of something or picking it up for closer inspection. I often wonder who owned items before me and what it has witnessed. Imagine my horror of being raised by a furniture store family! lol I started buying old pieces at 21yo and had a few older family things in my room as a teenager. The home I was born into was 50s Danish, but I loved visiting my 90yo next door neighbor's home and was fascinated by her antiques. We moved to an English Tudor when I was 10yo and it fit my decorating personality. I like English things, but don't try to decorate in English. Def. eclectic, to fit what I am drawn to and feel good around. I love the coolness of Swedish, but would never decorate my home that way. I need warm colors/items. Texture is a must. I'm a very visual person. Could never live in a modern home (I do enjoy seeing) but would not be comfortable in one on a daily basis. Touches of French are okay, but I'm not into ornate pieces from any style.

If I say, "That's what tape recorders are for ... ", ... it sort of dates me, doesn't it? But while we run the recorder ... we listen. Even if the tapes/CDs get pitched (by apartment-dweller relatives) on our demise ... we heard them, at least a few times ... and maybe, just maybe, some others did, too. But that's impersonal - it's the personal link that matters most. I loved my Grandpa - he used to haul me around on the tractor. The other Grandpa (Mom's side) died before I was born. I remember little of my mother - and she was with me till I was past 5, then again for a short while when I was about 7. Grandma, bent over with curvature of spine, lived with us after Grandpa died, and we gave her quite a merry chase, I fear. Mom and Grandpa were great friends, Dad says, and he died shortly after, a few months after youngest son born, she went into psych. hosp. Dad planned not to speak of Grandpa's death when he went to visit ... and she took one look at him, said, "Grandpa's gone, isn't he?". Son has set the recorder going and got me talking ... a few times. Maybe it's time to do that some more. We're to be together for a couple of days this week, during and after eye surgery. Do I hear message crackling around my brain? Thanks, enjoying spring. And ... enjoy summer, too, O.K.? ole joyful

All kinds of goodies that I shouldn't eat I get a craving for like brownies etc. I never get a craving for celery. I just got a craving for lemon bars or gingerbread. I went ahead and made the gingerbread because I am the only one who likes lemon bars. DS LOVES gingerbread! With whipped cream!

POTATO CHIP - the plain ones from Utz.

Oh, I forgot - pistachios, especially the salt-n-pepper flavored.

Once in a great while I will crave something sweet, but not often. I usually indulge myself with a small bag of candy, eat it fast then no more for a couple of months. I do buy biscotti or cookies to dunk, but that doesn't seem to make me gain weight. So I have something like that almost every day.

Decided to have a couple of plain cookies with milk, instead ... then remembered that it's time for my water pill (for swelling legs) ... so it's no eating for a while.

ole joyful, you sound like my husband. He keeps a stash of Little Debbies at his business and has been known to have Little Debbie for lunch! He shouldn't be eating so much sweets, but he does. He goes to the Dollar Store and stocks up, with many boxes of them. We have a dinner someplace, he won't eat much of the main meal, saying he can't eat much anymore, but will load his plate with dessert. He isn't over weight though. The kids can't believe he eats so much dessert.

I don't crave sweets. I do crave crispy fried chicken every once in awhile. When I can't stand it any more I go to KFC buffet and get my fill, usually a few pieces and I am good for quite awhile then.
