Melamine vs Baltic Birch Boxes?

Met with the cabinet maker again today. There are 2 routes we can go. Boxes made of melamine (we can have maple colour instead of white), or construction of baltic birch.

All drawers will be 7ply plywood regardless of box construction.

All the doors are solid wood.

Price upgrade for the birch is about $2000.00 more.

He says the integrity of the melamine is just as strong as the birch. The birch just make for a classier look inside.

He is not pushing the upgrade at all, in fact he feels the melamine is just fine.

I'm the one wrestling with wanting the upgrade because it does look nicer, however I really do need to trim some $$$ to keep on budget (OK, make that a little nearer to the budget I've already gone over).

Every photo I have seen of finished kitchens he has completed the client has chosen to go with the baltic birch so I don't have any melamine interiors to compare for the finished product.

How much of an issue is the interior beyond the initial look? Once the cabinets are filled with kitchen stuff do you stop 'seeing' the interior as distinct and separate?
