Oh Kat WA...You beat me to it. I was going to suggest the very same thing. Really, I was! LOL

Well....my son says it's coming from the monitor..but the monitor has no speakers, so I'm really befuzzled now!

Kat? You here? Until Kat shows up...

Is there a bee hive in the speaker? Look carefully!! LOL!!!

A friend had this trouble as well, it was interference from her cell phone but I think they told her it could be a cordless phone or even a tv. Do you have a television on the same circuit, they checked that for hers. I forget the reason, it was a year or so ago, something about the speakers not be encoded or some such term. I bet Raven will know what the trouble is!

Ours does that now & then. Son says it's the router. Beats me!

Mine does that too and my speakers in my car. I don't know what causes it but it's not a ghost...HEEHEE!

do you have a cell phone near the pc if so move it away that will definetely cause that problem, I forget some times and set my purse with my cell phone in it on my desk and that starts happening. some cordless phones or other cordless devices can do it too if they are too close by.

Speakers for computers have special magnetic shielding so it does not mess with the monitor and electronics which is why it is not advised to use any other type of speaker with your pc.

you can also try unplugging and plugging into a different outlet or in the same one, sometimes for some reason weird things happen and unplugging and re plugging can help/

I noticed that when I turn on my TV my computer comes out of hibernation.

Does your monitor have speakers?

Are you sure that everything is fully off when you hear this sound? If your gear is plugged into a power strip, turn that off too. Does the sound stop with the power strip off. It should be. If the sound comes back when you turn the power strip on, this is a clue - something is leaking or not fully off.

Is your computer really off, or merely hibernating?

Another source for this sound would be the speaker system. If you have external speakers that has its own power supply, it is possible for sound to get through with everything off except for power supplied to the speaker's power supply. Supposedly, the speakers and their amplifiers are off, but these days, that on-off switch may not be a mechanical one, but an electronic one and it could be letting some power pulses through. The sound may be either 60 or 120 hz. It may sound a bit buzzy rather than a clean, pure tone sine wave.

And yes, this should not be.

The other possibility is that the speakers do not have an off feature. In this case, they are on when its power supply is plugged in. What you would hear then is the ripple of the power supply. The power supply takes AC (alternating current) voltage and trnasforms it to DC (direct current). However, this is big job and it is near impossible to filter out all ripple. In the absence of s sound signal, the speakers will hum a little. With sound signal present, the hum is still there but not noticable.

Another test: With stuff off and if the speakers are humming, turn the volume control (on the speaker system) up and down. If the speaker noise also goes up and down, they are not off, but are powered up.
