IPE deck problem

I installed IPE boards (5/4x6") on my deck face screwing(and countersunk) into pressure treated joists (2 8x2.5" SS trimhead screws/board each crossing)

The boards seem to have come loose and make a loud creaking noise when I walk on the deck--worst on very hot sunny days.

Any ideas to fix this?

Use regular SS deck screws not trim head, the movement of the deck boards is pulling the screw and extending the hole making the board loose. Trim screw are NOT for decking, they are for trim!

I just washed my deck with the Penofin step 2 cleaner. Very satisfied with it. It even got rid of the end sealer wax stains (with the addition of simple green but I don't think it was necessary). I plan on using the Penofin hardwood sealer. It wasn't easy though since I scrubbed the surface with a deck scrubber brush really well. Can't you get Penofin online somewhere if it's not available locally?

Steve, Thanks for the reply, but I am amazed that some stain or finish will not hold up under snow. It is not the whole deck that deteriorates only patches or areas. In those areas, as I had mentioned, predominately along the joist lines, the wood turns very light and you can not just re-apply the stain. You must sand those areas down to bare wood in order for the stain to take again. There again I believe that this is due to the EB-TY biscuit fasteners at the joists, allowing moisture in along the deck board edges and getting under the stain. I had thought that after enough applications the wood would have been conditioned along the edges to not show this effect. I have no issue with staining the deck twice a year, but to have to essentially strip off the old stain and start from scratch each spring is too excessive. I am not looking for a sealer, I am only looking to maintain the IPE color. That is why I originally went with the Cabot's since it is a penetrating oil. If no one in snow country has any experience with some stain working, then I will just have to let the deck go silver and sacrifice that great IPE color.

What do you define a 'scratch' as? All materials are going to scratch to some extent. All decks will have some scratches on them...you're using a material that will have things drug across it, dropped on it, run across it...it's a floor. What does your hardwood floor look like if you don't sweep it regularly? And do you have a carpet under the table? And that's inside! I've seen all kinds of decks and for all of the reasons I've thought of, Ipe is a clear winner. There are many more reasons that Ipe is better than TT or any other composite. If you don't want to SEE the scratches, find some composite of a muddy color and you won't see it as much. I guess it's all what your primary concerns are.

These were trimhead DECK screws. I had heard they were commonly used for IPE.

I can tell you without asking, you drilled the pilot hole into the joist. When pilot drilling Ipe, it is very important to only drill through the IPE, not into the joist at all.

The reason for this is that IPE needs a pilot hole the same size as the screw threads. Smaller pilot hole will break off the screw in IPE, so the pilot hole is oversized.

In the pine or fir joist, the pilot hole is bad, especially since it is oversized. The screw threads do not have enough meat left to grab hold of. The screw will drive into the PT joist wothout any pilot hole. The screw, driven into the virgin PT softwood without a pilot hole, is going to hold much better.

pilot holes drilled using standard countersink bit designed for screw(smartbit). If pilot hole entered PT board, it would be very short distance.

That may not have been good enough. The key is to set the depth of the pilot drill to the exact thickness of the decking, so the pilot hole does not drill into the joist at all.

An issue with the PT Joists, is the joists shrink as they dry out. A screw that is set flush with the surface will protrude from the surface as the joist shrinks from drying. The result is the screw seems to have loosened, or pulled out from the hole. In my experience, this is more often the joists shrinking and expanding from the seasons, rather than the screw actually pulling loose. Try tightening the screws with a hand driver. If they're too tight to turn by hand, then the joist shrinkage is likely the culprit, and not the pilot holes.

To tighten the screws back down, you'll need a heavy person and a small block of wood for them to step on, to concentrate the load as necessary.
