Off topic: Tornado

My sister in Lakeland called me yesterday and told me a tornado was coming. I said thanks, now I'll now the instant before I die why. About 5 minutes later, suddenly it got almost pitch black, I heard the wind howling, the electricity went off, I looked out the bedroom window and all the trees, even the big huge ones, were bent halfway to the ground and twirling around and around like a child's top that's about ready to topple over. Suddenly I thought about my Uncle Robert who lives in WV where the wind never blows over 10 mph, and that if he had been here and seen that he would've probably had to run in and change his undies. I said a very bad word, I grabbed my cellphone and ran and hid in the closet for about 2 minutes. When I heard all the racket die down and emerged, I realized that the phone wouldn't have done me any good if something had happened because it doesn't work in the house anyway. Funny how the mind works at times like that. I get real excited when I see a tornado in the distance, but when it's right on top of me I get a little afeared for myself!

Those are scary. I hadn't heard of any tornadoes lately, just lots of storms and snow in the east. This weather is something else.

Hi Karyn and Gill, yes its so sad to see that on t.v. and I can visualize it in my mind where it all is. When I went back in 93' all the same area under water. An un-real sight to see. I haven't been able to reach one of my first cousins, I stay in touch with her e-mail. Am going to try and reach my aunt again today. I have to feel that most are ok..guess the massive tornados accross Kansas, they carry heavy rain, is a path of weather storms there that go accross Missouri and on up to probably Iowa. Yes, too many devistating storms now, Gill you had one too..Yes Karyn we are in drought conditions here, and look at all that water that will not go down, too much saturation. Am going to try again today to reach my aunt..I have a huge family back there, my mom was from a family of 14, most are gone, but I have lots of cousins, few aunts and uncles. Floods make such a mess, everything must be sterilized, top soil is ruined, toxic conditions too. I am going back to St. Joseph next year, is my high shcool renunion, don't tell anyone, my 50th!. My plumaria expert says that blossom booster or anything with such a high middle number is useless. In fact some of the threads by Al will agree. I use "Dynamite" 13 13 13...Even numbers right across the board. In fact most plants don't like such a high middle number, because your throwing the abilty off for the whole plant to be healthy, even the colors of the leaves by forcing flowers on your plants when you don't have to. How come plumies flower from the ground outdoors withou someone throwing so much middle number on them? In the ground, they are getting an even amount of nutriets to sustain over look, vigour, and health. I will send you an excert of why the middle number is useless. The "dynamite" has worked wonders for me. It is slow release along with micro nutrients and a well balanced fert. Just some excerts... "Whatever nutrients are available in excess, will be absorbed by the plant to a certain degree, and in some cases, this may lead to toxicity or even symptoms of shortages of other nutrients as toxicity levels block a plant's ability to take up other nutrients. Too much nitrogen will lead to excessive foliage production and less flowering. Too much potassium or phosphorus will not lead to ill effect, but will show up as a deficiency of other nutrients as it blocks uptake". "What about the "Bloom Booster" fertilizers you might ask? To induce more prolific flowering, a reduced N supply will have more and better effect than the high P bloom formulas. When N is reduced, it slows vegetative growth without reducing photosynthesis. Since vegetative growth is limited by a lack of N, and the photosynthetic machinery continues to turn out food, it leaves an expendable surplus for the plant to spend on flowers and fruit". "The fact that different species of plants grow in different types of soil where they are naturally found, does not mean that one needs more of a certain nutrient than the other. It just means that the plants have developed strategies to adapt to certain conditions, like excesses and deficiencies of particular nutrients.." "Most greenhouse operations will follow pretty closely to a 2-1-2 ratio of the primary macro-nutrients on most greenhouse crops with minor deviations based on tissue analysis and the effect of the growing medium. Most post-greenhouse fertilization will follow fairly closely to a 3-1-2 ratio, with some deviation. Again, this very closely mimics the range of the primary macros found in plant tissues". Thank you so much for letting us know, Patricia. I love the talented Mr. Peacock! :o) I might be mistaken, but I believe Ms. Edna was in her 70s when they met, bumblebeez. I've read in interviews that she was a much beloved mentor & friend. He's said that he found comfort in caring for her in her later age. She passed away a couple of years ago at the age of 89.

I'm so sorry to here about the direction you're headed... it's not an easy path to follow. BTDT. Please remember to take care of yourself too. One thing for your DH's soothies. My DH could only have liquids but had a dairy allergy. Grainlady suggested adding Great Lakes Gelatine - Collagen Hydolysate to his fruit or meat smoothies to add protein and needed amino acids... in the green colored can. I got it thru' Amazon from whichever vendor was cheapest because it's not inexpensive.... about $18 a big can... which lasts for awhile. My best wishes for you this holiday season. Kate

OMG I'm glad you are alright. I was in one once and it's really scary. I was dumb and didn't know what was happening till it was gone but it was scary seeing black skies all of a sudden and things blowing around the skies. Being so dumb almost got me killed. People should think ahead and have a plan. Phone won't do good even with signal. Police already know, trust me.

Glad you are OK!! I was also in one once - never expected to ever be lying in a ditch on top of my infant trying to protect him. I was fine before & during the whole thing, but once it was all over I was shaking like a leaf & crying! I don't ever want to be in the situation again.
Toolgranny, GREAT advice! ALWAYS have a plan.

Weird, but we actually had a conversation about tornado safety on the way to school this morning! The boys brought it up & told me where they go at home in case of a tornado warning. I made certain they know where to go when they are at MY house too! Let's pray this crazy weather doesn't stay on thro the spring!!

Glad you're ok, Rita. We got a ton of rain and wind but no damage. The worst part was a little southeast of us. I felt sorry for that lady who was in her car when the gas station canopy fell and landed on her car. The roof was crushed to the steering wheel and she had to be cut out of her vehicle.

The strong wind and lightning were pretty intense last night, and we got a little over 2" of rain, but it wasn't bad enough here for us to be frightened. We were watchful though! I had just moved back to Orlando in 1998 when we had some very bad tornadoes all around us. I still think of February as Tornado Month.

Lots of rain and wind in Winter Garden, too, but no tornados! I heard on the news that some houses in Groveland were damaged by the wind.

Rita, I was born in Lakeland and lived there until I got married. What area is your sister in?

I use to lived in IL where tornados are part of the spring sky. Not fun at all. Glad you're okay.
Been thru a few of them myself, very humbling experience.

You sound so cool with it. I would still be shakeing. I am so glad you are OK. I don't think of Tornados this time of year but know they have been happening. Here in the snow country we have other problems but woundn't trade with yours. I agree that you need a plan but sometimes the notice is pretty short. Take care. Jayne

Thanks to all for your relief that I'm OK. Donna, my sister lives on a ranch in a rural area East of 39 and North of Knights Griffin Rd. (near Kathleen). In fact, she and her beloved are members of the Kathleen Historical Society. I walked the property as much as I could navigate yesterday, mainly to see if there was any damage to the fence line. We have cleared this 5 acre plot minimally so it's tricky with all the fallen branches and underbrush. Amazingly, I found only one of the hundreds of trees on the property that was snapped in two, it's a widow-maker because it's still hanging and will be dangerous to get all the way down. Pretty big pine. There was one area that I couldn't get to way in the back to check the fence line due to all the fallen branches, my husband will have to check that out when he gets the chance. After what I witnessed, it's unbelievable what contortions huge trees can take without being broken down.

That is amazing that there wasn't more damage from your description! And, I too am glad to hear you weren't hurt. We also have a large fenced in farm, and frequently have trees taking down our fending. Most of it is barbed wire, so it is a fairly easy fix. At least our horses like to stay close to the barn, so they don't venture far when the fence is broken.

I hope things settle down and your power was quickly restored.
