Update on my dog

Not much of an update. She is not deathly ill, but she is slowly failing. I called the vet on Friday to ask if she should be seen, and since she is still eating some, drinking, peeing and pooing, they said they weren't concerned. But now, she is eating less, and less enthusiastically when she does eat. She's not coming for extra treats, which is NOT like her. She does not want to do anything, and she needs help on the stairs. She's just not as alert and "involved" as she was, and even less than last week.

So I called and got her in today. They examined her and took her temp. Everything seemed normal. They took blood, but their machine was not working properly. So they said they can tell she doesn't have an infection, but that the part that they have to send away, the "chemical composition" part, whatever that is, is the most important part. So they said they will call me in the morning with results.

For tonight, they gave me some pain medication to give to Tosha, and some liquid diet food with electrolytes. I just hope they discover some minor little problem that is easily fixed.

susan--sorry to hear this...if it helps, every time I worried something bad was wrong with our lab mix I found out it was some little thing or nothing they could find and he bounced back in a day or two.

ours has been droopy acting too and I thought maybe the season changing has something to do with it...he does have allergies.

I'm so sorry. How long has this been going on. Dory wasn't feeling well, sounds kind of like this, they fiugred it was kennel cough.... it took a week and she was back to herself. I hope they find something easy!

My 6 year old husky/shepherd mix tore her CCL (it is called a canine cruciate ligament in dogs, not ACL like a human) on January 5th, 2015. We opted for conservative care versus surgical after I extensively researched all options. Even with surgery, they have up to 40% chance of having arthritis in the stifle (knee joint). That is about the same as the odds of having it without surgery. Also, surgery so restricts their movement that often, up to 30-40% of dogs have the same injury happen to the other leg. I found that number to be much less with conservative care. She is just over 8 weeks out and walks on four legs fine at a slow speed. We never crated her, just restricted her movement. No jumping or running. (she had a setback once when some idiot let her out of her pole barn and she ran a bit....set us back a bit, but not much). She walks up to 15 minutes at a time on all four legs with her A-Trac Brace which I bought for her. Almost full pressure on injured leg. We walk her with the brace 1 time per day and give her 3 other walks without out it for about 5 minutes each. When she speeds up she does life the leg UNLESS she is on a mission (smells a rabbit or something along those lines). I know it will take many more months before she will full on using the leg 100% of the time and from here on out, we will restrict her running unless she is wearing the brace. But I guess the point I am making is that you can heal them without surgery. My vet is very impressed at the healing she has had. In fact he suggested surgery right away and I told him I was going to try the conservative treatment. He checked her at 4 weeks and was astonished at her level of healing. She was on pain meds for a couple weeks and also Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) which she is still on, along with a supplement. I also give her organic bone broth with each meal (known to help with joints) and she gets lots of natural healing including Reiki energy healing and work with stones and crystals. She is doing wonderful. I know it is a long process and I am willing to work through it for her benefit.

My 6 yr old dachshund began bleeding from her mouth so we took her to the vet who initially diagnosed her as gums bleeding as her teeth were due for cleaning along with an abscess. She continued to bleed some from her mouth thru the night and on the following day she was brought in for teeth cleaning. On the day following her teeth cleaning, we again noticed blood at her mouth and now in her urine. She was drinking some water and she ate a little but then vomited some blood so once again we brought her in to the Vet and was advised that she likely had been poisoned or had an autoimmune disease and that we ahould bring her immediately to LSU Veterinary Hospital. Got there, stabilized her and diagnosed her with ITP and kept her in ICU overnight. Less than 12 hrs later, received a call that she died as her bleeding could not be controlled. This occurred over a 4 day period.

Well I don't know what to tell you other than it sounds like the crate that was used was either not sturdy enough or not assembled properly. I have an adopted dog that used to get very anxious when I would leave. To this day he often curls up by the door that I walk out of and waits there the whole time by the door until I come back but not always. Before he demonstrated he could be trusted alone in the house he had to stay in his crate. I made the crate a very rewarding place to be because he got Kongs stuffed with peanut butter, slices of bread and other goodies to work on while I was away. Fun fun fun. And it involves chewing so he'd calm down. Then by the time the Kongs are cleaned out he's wiped out and in need of a nap. The crate should be used frequently before you actually have to leave the dog alone. Feeding the dog in the crate and giving him treats for going in there teaches the dog that being in the crate is a reward and not a punishment. It should never be a punishment. Dogs do not know what cages are. They see wire or chainlink like walls of their safe little cave. But humans know what cages are and have preconceived notions about cages being cruel. If this is the case, decorate the room that the crate is in with happy doggie related decorations so that there is a feeling of happiness that overwhelms any wire cage crulety feeling the dog owner may have. This is solely for the owner. After a while he graduated to bedroom and had freedom to the entire bedroom. Then eventually the whole house. Then it just becomes up to the dog. The first night I gave my older boy rights to the whole house and an open crate, he wandered around for about 30 minutes then guess where he decided to sleep.... He went back in the crate all on his own decision. These things take time. After a while the dog will start to figure out that the human is coming back. Setting up a routine helps.

Thanks everyone! To answer a few questions - she does come to her name. She did that almost immediately for some reason. I think she is very smart. She watches our other 2 dogs and I can see her trying to do what they do. She'll run to me when I come in the door like they do and her little nub wags! But she won't let me pet her like they do. She is a toy poodle. We haven't braved a bath yet. She's definitely due and we need to trim her nails. That is going to be an ordeal I'm sure. At night when I have to pick her up to put her in her pen, she is running away from me less and less. I point to the bedroom and she usually runs right in. Then I have to wait for her to stop backing up and sit down and I'll pick her up then. A few times recently she has turned to look at me and make eye contact! Baby steps! But it is awesome to see all the progress she continues to make.

She's been sick for about 10 or 11 days. She was at the same degree of sickness for the first 8 days, but now I see her getting worse.

Susan, I'm so sorry to hear Tosha isn't feeling well. How old is she? Sure hope she gets to feeling better soon.

She just turned 8. I appreciate your comments and thoughts. It's just weird and frustrating because there's no obvious reason for her to feel the way she seems to be feeling.

My heart goes out to you and Tosha. I hope they find out what is wrong soon. She is a young dog still and not having energy sure is a worry.

I hope she feels better soon. Maybe she's hurt her back a little and it's throwing her off in other ways? My brother's chi was acting really bad and it turned out she had wrenched her neck somehow. Some R&R and pain pills and she was lots better in just a couple of days.

I'm glad you got her in, Susan. Hopefully they'll figure this out!

Waiting for an up date. We all know how devastating it is to go through this. You feel so helpless because your loved one cannot tell you what is wrong. Eight is still so young. Hope this passes quickly.

It is pure hell to watch a loved pet get ill. And 8 seems so young to me. I know different breeds all have different life spans, but 8? You are in my thoughts Susan. We have 5 dogs ourselves. Not to mention the 8 cats. It just kills me when one of them is sick. Let us know what the vet says. Until then, fingers and toes crossed that it is indeed something very minor.
