Do you have a favorite old movie?

DH and I are big movie fans, and we love a lot of the old classics. One of my favorites is Notorious with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. I thought it might be fun to start a thread seeing which classic movies other people like.

I used to love "Mr Peabody and the Mermaid" It was on all the time when I was a kid. I even have a VHS copy of it.

Ya mean my fav Junk Do-Dads besides glass for totems and flowers? LOL I especially like funky style things that are handmade. Must take a pic of one of my latest treasures to show. The day I found a large coffee can full of chandy crystals for only $2. was a memorable day! No one but a dedicated YS/crafter/junker could understand that thrill. Other than that my list IS a mile long. I like anything that could be described as architectural, bling, antique, vintage, concrete, rock, or repurposed. Does that cover pretty much any ol' thing I might find cheap at a yard sale? Or sometimes not so cheap at a thrift or antique shop? I've also recently found a little old table for $2 and a very junky bench for $1.50 for my garden or garden house. They need help and I probably overpaid even at those low prices. My DH just shakes his head when I buy things like this. He thinks they're trash and he may be right. But I like them and know they can be reno'd.

My favorite B&W movie is The Women, directed by George Cukor, 1939. Oklahoma, as I recall, was in color. I tried to watch it recently, since I had recorded it on DVR, but 30 minutes of it was all I could bear. I'm not a fan of musicals, however, except really off-beat ones like Help!. GWTW was in color also. Other B&W movies I like include Night of the Iguana, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Suddenly Last Summer, The Rose Tattoo, Hunchback of Notre Dame (with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lolabrigida), Bringing up Baby, The Day The Earth Stood Still, It Came From Outer Space, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Citizen Kane. These probably aren't your taste, but they are old and B&W! In L.A., any movie that is more than 10 years old is considered old. Lars

Have you had old home movies tranfered to DVD?

I work in TV/film, and frankly, I think Costco will do a better job than a local camera store, simply because they do more transfers. If you live in LA or NYC or SF, there are professional post-production facilities that can do it, as well. DVD won't last forever, so do preserve the actual film as well. I'm going to throw out one because I love Scotland. It's an oldie called, "I Know Where I'm Going" which is a precursor to another great one, "Local Hero." Another Scottish one, "Dear Frankie." Some others--Outsourced, Hector's Search for Happiness, The Whole Wide World, French Kiss, and of course, Dirty Dancing. I also liked the Addams Family Values movie, which has a fantastic summer camp parody. Since summer means road trips to me, some others are "The Electric Horseman" and "Smoke Signals" and "Harry and Tonto." And the all time "fun day" movie is "Roman Holiday." Maybe "Starman" for another road trip kind of movie. or how about "If It's Tuesday it Must Be Belgium" which is an oldie but a classic. I love old movies so YMMV. I suppose maybe "A River Runs Through It" but that one is sad. "The River Why" is a good scenery movie if you like fishing, but my SO thought it was boring. Apparently James Duncan, the author of the novel, didn't like it either and sued to have his name disassociated with it. The book is great if you like water and fish. Speaking of so so movies with good scenery, my dad loves "The Proposal." I think he has a mild crush on Sandra Bullock. Don't we all!

Great choices here - I just purchased a big-screen. I'm gonna start watching these. I love movies and that's why I got the TV. After reading these I know I don't have just one favorite - I love everyone on these lists. Bestlawn - you got most of mine!! Great thread - thanks for starting.

I am hoping this qualifies as a classic, but the original Parent Trap is still an all time favorite of mine. I watch it at least twice a year. Almost any of the original Disney movies work for me. Still a big kid I guess.
