qotd....??? What do you like or dislike about your sewing space?
Comments (13)I was about 55 before I finally had my own sewing room!!! The up side is that it has 2 windows so it is bright and sunny. The down side is that it has 2 windows and it is bright and sunny lol!!!!! It is about 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house and I have black out curtains to try and reduce the heat in the hot and humid southern summer (and a ceiling fan!). I can look out my window and see my rose garden, one gorgeous pink and yellow bush has about 30 blooms on it right now. I had probs growing roses in Florida and they love this Georgia climate. It is small and I would love to have the whole garage to myself, but I can open the door and listen to the TV, and I can close the door when it is in a mess (always!). Comments (38)I have small children at home, so I cannot yet justify spending money on a fancy machine, but you can bet it's on my wish list, or my "some day" list. Lol* Right now I have several machines I use regularly...I recently purchased a featherweight and it's my favorite for straight piecing. It's also portable which is a plus, and really cute to look at. For sewing curves or anything a little more involved than piecing, I use a Simplicity Quilter's Classic, which was a very affordable machine, under $200, and it has a lot of features the more expensive machines have. My only gripe is the feed is kind of wimpy so I don't use it for anything other than quilting. If I have to do some heavy duty mending I use my featherweight or an old sturdy Singer I have in the house. My next step up would probably be to a Viking Husqvarna or a Baby Lock...although I think really, while a lot of people are devoted to their brands, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands. I just like those two because they are slightly more affordable upscale machines. :) Good luck! Loved reading everyone's posts here!...See MoreWhat lighting do you use in your sewing room?
Comments (9)Before you spend a lot of money on an Ott light be aware that you pay a lot for the name. Check out your local lighting shop and ask what they have which is similar to Ott lights. You can probably get a similar lamp for 1/5 the price. I purchased a bulb replacement for my Ott light at our lighting shop and could not tell the difference in the colour which Ott lights advertise as best. Also, check out Costco. I personally rarely use my floor stand Ott light (purchased for $25 at Costco) as I have a halogen lamp in my sewing room as well as rather poor overhead light with a fan. I also have the small Ott task light ($10 Costco) which I use constantly focused somewhere or other on my machine or on handwork I am doing....See Moredo you sell what you sew???
Comments (11)Kathi, never fails to amaze me how many people share your opinion of alterations/repairs. After Home Ec./4-H my formal training was in the shop of a tailor (4+ yrs.). I was taught well by someone who buttered his bread fixing/altering garments... and what I learned to love about that aspect of the trade was the VARIETY... . Sure, there were hems, sleeves, waist adj's., zipper replacements, but there were also pocket replacements, relines, lapel modifications, and countless "simple" mending jobs. Occasionally the addition of a hand-worked boutonniere! It was never "boring"! Interestingly, I feel no such excitment when it comes to Bridal work. I loathe it! and rarely deign to accept it. Give me straight alterations/repairs any day of the week; I've endured one too many brides late for app'ts. and have little time/patience for the "do I look fat in this?" routine. I feel a similar loathing when it comes to working on furs. The fur industry is fascinating from a technical aspect, but I've never quite been able to get past the philosophical aversion I have to the industry as a whole... (that's why I never bothered to buy the machinery when the occasion presented itself!). Funny how certain aspects of a trade appeal to some and repulse others! :)...See Moresandlapper_rose
