24 inch oven, should I have larger cabinet built?

My oven is only 24 inches wide, but it's not very old and I want to keep it. My cabinet maker never said anything about the width when he took measurements, but when I went to purchase a trim kit for a built in microwave they told me I can't get them in 24 inches. Sure enough, almost no one makes 24 inch ovens anymore. Major investment is going in to custom cabinets, so I'm wondering if I should have him make the cabinet larger and get a custom trim made for my small oven? Should I go with 27 inch or 30 inch? Why does everyone need such a big oven??

contact Micro-Trim in Cali. They'll make you anything you need.

If your cabinet maker is "making" your cabinets then they are "custom". It doesn't really matter if they are 24", 30" or 60 CM. If it were me I'd have him make a cabinet for a 30" oven and trim it out to fit your 24". This will give you /someone else more options. 27" ovens are dying a slow death.

"Need" has nothing to do with it!

I feel confident that 24" appliances will be highly promoted in the future.

You can have a 24" trim piece made out of stainless steel. That is easy.

plllog, that's a good point about the two units needing to fit well in the same cabinet space. Does anyone know which one is typically installed first, cooktop or oven? lee676, I did look at some Smeg oven units and they looked really nice, but it was still too pricey for us. Tinyhomebuilder, thanks for the heads up on the bluestar range and for giving us a hint of the price, all the websites we looked at said to call for price =) Whle I know it makes more sense to get a good range unit rather than spreading out the cost over what might be considered lesser cooktop/oven units, In our case it was a priority that we get a cooktop. Mostly its for the aesthetics (we are trying to do a stainless countertop with an integrated sink and a cooktop would work very nicely with that setup) but also I'm a messy cook, and one of my pet peeves is food crumbs falling into the crack between the countertop and the range. I'd also like to mention that I personnally almost never cook with an oven, and was considering not having a wall oven but just going with the breville countertop smart oven. However, my husband who never cooks has promised to get more into cooking once we finish the remodel, and the one time he cooked, he roasted a duck (thanks Mark Bitman), so now he's convinced we need an oven. Anyways, I'm willing to get the oven on the off chance that he'll keep his word and get into cooking =) plus the house will be hard to resell without any accomodation for an oven.

Hey Fori and All, I just ordered 2 Fisher Paykel 24" ovens and they're supposed to be here on Monday! They were $1599 each. I was looking at the Fagor one...sure is cute, but I couldn't find it locally and I decided it was too much of a gamble service wise. The price is tough to beat though! :-) As soon as I have my ovens I will post pictures for those of us who are space challenged in the oven department. I'm not sure what would look good next to a five star range...thinking maybe the DeLonghi like you said. It seems that a lot of the 24" ones are somewhat eurostyled with a sleek modern look...which fits into my 1950's modern house very nicely. I'm having some custom metalwork done as well as cabinet carpentry once the ovens are here...so it'll be a week or two til I have a completed install. I can't wait to see them...little scary ordering an appliance sight unseen. Pizza parties here we come :-) Anne

Outlets close to the floor are great for stuff that gets plugged in and stays plugged in like table lamps and stuff on nightstands. In addition to that, who wants to look at a bunch of outlets and a cords hanging down in their line of sight all the time? The other side of the coin is what a pain it would be to bend down to plug in a kitchen appliance, for example every time. It is obviously only a thought exercise, but if kitchens did not have outlets above counters, they'd be installed high next to those counters anyway. We have 120V outlets for washers and gas dryers mounted high and for plugging in irons in laundry rooms. We're kind of stuck for things like the vacuum cleaner because the outlets anywhere but the above examples are for lamps and whatnot. A vacuum cleaner outlet in every room might be a slick idea. Maybe that is why my wife does not like to clean. She certainly does not like to bend over placing her head and shoulders near the floor. In laboratory situations, the original construction most often has wall outlets for coolers and large, floor-located equipment low. The electricians always want to add them low as well. I make a point to ask for the box about 4 feet off the floor. It is not so much so it is easy to reach. It means that after we plug em in and start to roll them toward the wall, the wheels don't get hung up on the cord as easily or at all.

I probably wouldn't go smaller than 30" on the induction cooktop. My first apartment after college had a narrow gas range. It was either 27" or 24". Yes, if you have to, you can cook on it; and I did for eight years. But pots easily get crowded out. Frequently, you can only use two of the diagonal hobs. Unless I was really squeezed for space in my kitchen remodel, I'd sacrifice the extra 6" of cabinet space and get the standard-sized cooktop. On the other hand, a 24" wall oven is perfectly functional. I love our new Miele CSO. Most useful appliance ever. And the limited space has yet to be a problem. It has plenty of capacity, unless you regularly cater large crowds ... and honestly, in that case you'd probably still be better off with more ovens rather than bigger ovens. We still have the oven in our 30" range, but I don't really anticipate using it much at all. The 24" CSO has more useful features, is easy to keep clean, has sufficient capacity, heats up super fast, and is more convenient to access at countertop level, rather than below the stove.

If you have the space, I would definitely plan for the future...30" ovens are the most common and will probably be around for the long haul....not so sure about 27".

If nothing else, it will help w/resale. To be honest, if I was buying, a 24" oven would be a big negative unless I knew I could easily replace it with a 30"...i.e., if the cabinet is sized for a 24" oven it would be pretty close to a deal breaker for me unless I planned to redo the kitchen. But, if it was in a 30" cabinet, I would probably be OK with it, knowing that I could switch it out. (Even 27" would be a negative to me.)

For you, though, what if the 24" oven dies? You probably won't be able to easily get another one in that size...

Besides, a 30" cabinet will fit a 24", 27", or 30" oven...so it gives you greater flexibility overall.

This is assuming you're in the USA. I don't know about Europe or even Canada.

I'm in the same boat, exactly. I'm having my cabinet maker do a 30" cabinet that will accomodate all three sizes, so I can use my nearly new 24" a little while longer, and save $$ on the redo.
In this economy we might see less 36" and above sales in cooktops and ranges, but I can't imagine a shift back to anything smaller than 30".
Why do you need to accomodate a 30"? We are a family of 3, and I don't bake a lot, so my 24" has not made me curse daily, except when I am baking cookies and would like to put two pans of dough in there.
It preheats real fast, and has lots of great features I like. But, at holiday time it was a real shame. I did all of the cooking myself and with one microwave, and an oven that will accomodate only one 9 x 13" pyrex dish, it was awful.
Dinner was late because of all the pre-cooked food I had to heat up. Some things just have to be reheated in an oven, not a microwave. I heated the Spinach Madeleine in the microwave and my son wondered where the crusty top was. If you have a convection microwave it might not be as much of an issue, but I don't.

Great input. I guess I won't feel bad about asking the cabinetmaker to make this change. Actually, I'm a little surprised he didn't suggest it before he did the drawings. I see Kitchenaid does still make the 24 inch size, but I would hate to be held hostage on a future decision by the cabinet size. Then again, I'm not sure if I want to sacrifice 6 inches of cabinet space for the life of my current oven so I may go with a 27 inch cabinet. I can always put in a double oven next time around, since it's easier to modify cabinet height than width.
