i'm sitting here with HGTV on and find i am strangely attracted to the holmes on homes guy. and of course chico from candice's show...

Hon, I'm a stranger on a web board, and I agree with you - you need to get a hobby. (And by virtue of the fact that I took the time to write a response seems to be an indication that I need to get a hobby, as well. :) )

Oh, I love him, I wish I could get him to fix up my house. He was on DIY Network last year, which is where I found him. Definitely a keeper.

He's capable, competent, smart, kind, and handy with power tools. What's not to like.

Thanks for the advice, barnhardt. Isn't 100% humidity an unavoidable constant with the sealed plastic bag method? That's what I'm currently doing, but I need to change something obviously. From my perspective, which admittedly is marginal, there aren't any special/purchased "must haves," because I've successfully rooted at least one fig once without anything special, and I'm content to work from there, no matter how much easier any purchases could make things. I'm basically just doing this as a hobby, so I don't have to achieve any particular level of efficiency, and I get more satisfaction out of optimizing the use of what I've got even than achieving dramatically better results by spending even just a little extra money. I got to wondering, though, if I'm not going to buy special materials if I wouldn't be better off just rooting cuttings in the ground somehow. I was thinking maybe I could even find a way to stick them diagonally so that their roots would be inside a cold frame that would warm up during the day but the exposed tips would be exposed to the colder outside air.

When I read Veggie Chica's original Q I thought of some ideas we got at a veggie conference on selling herbs, perrenial and annual. We grow many herbs to sell as cut bunches and Basil always tops the list in our area, whether it is sweet or one of the lemons,limes,cinnimon,licorice,opal,red...well you get the picture. But pesto recipes are a great sales booster for basil and I always situate the basil (and cilantro) next to our tomato display because people need to be reminded of the association of the two. But when it comes to the other herbs, we had moderate sales of potted herbs until we took it to a new level in offering mixed herb "SIX PACKS". Six different basils= "PESTO PACK". Combine other herbs to make the "SEASONING PACK", "FRAGRANCE PACK", "MEDICINAL PACK", FLAVOR PACK", "TEA PACK", etc. Start your herbs separately and at different times to allow the packs to all look uniform when you combine them to create the six packs. For instance, dill and cilantro grow much faster than ..... Rosemary, Lavender and Thyme are slow growers. You will be amazed at the increased sales, especially in areas where people associate six packs with beverages.

Thanks ronbre, for all your thoughts, there are some good ones in there! I love my house, but there are some things that were not well thought out by us, but that was because we were living in a FEMA trailer and wanted out of it in a hurry, so we found this houseplan and built it pretty much as is from the plan. The back door and the breakfast nook and the fireplace could have used some tweaking in where they were placed, but we were in such a hurry we didn't catch that. Weren't even in the house 2 years, when we got hit by another hurricane, and flooded with 3 ft of water, so again, we were in a hurry to get it fixed and get back "home" rather than living somewhere temporarily. I have always wanted a fireplace with a mantel to decorate, and so I think it needs to be a focal point, but obviously the big tv is also a focal point. My recliners are both actually a chestnut colored leather, one is just darker than the other, as we didn't decide we wanted two when we purchased the first one, therefore they are obviously from different dye lots. =( Again, my mistake, that's what I get for being in a hurry! But I definitely want to add more seating in this room, not just move around the chairs that I have now. I need a conversation area and so that is why I am thinking two club style chairs for either side of the entertainment center or adding a loveseat. Then I could make the reading nook like you are talking about by the window!!! The ceilings are great to look at and to have "mood lighting"(DH calls it nude lighting in the bedroom...ha) but it also makes me think things have to be centered off of the ceiling, like the entertainment center or our bed for example. You answered one question about the art with the red in it. I figured it was too big for that wall, but just wanted to see what others thought. It would only have about an inch clearance around it. I am also looking for some kind of chest or demilune table for that little wall. Trying to make that DH landing spot for keys, wallet etc, instead of the bar in the kitchen. The nightstands in the bedroom are the same height, the lamp on the left is a little shorter than the one on the right, I just thought they probably shouldn't be taller than the headboard of the bed. It's not real easy to reach the lamp to turn it off from bed. I need a console/buffet, more seating, coffee table, end table, lamps, rug, artwork, drapes. Accessories, I'll worry about later. I just want to get my big pieces set first. I have "hurricane fatigue" and just want this done and pray that we will have a quiet season this year, so we can actually relax and actually enjoy our home.

I took some classes way back when with a girl who taught classes in her garage. Learned allot of tips and techniques from her and a good foundation about shading and highlights. Then she moved away and the rest I have just learned on my own from books and a couple of videos. Wish I would have found another small class, but it was really hard time wise back then since I was a supervisor at a bank and working lots of hours. Still have lots of old pattern books. Have liked lots of different styles. Do you remember Donna Spiegel, and Juliet Martin. My instructor liked them, so those were some of the first books I bought. Painted quite a few items from them--still do once in awhile. Painted lots of Lori Holt, Cheri Saffoite, Karen Stone, Myra Mahey. Now I like Renee Mullins, Laurie Speltz, Nancy Wood, and several others. I really enjoy doing Donna Dewberry's One Stroke too. So far, I've gotten pretty good at the roses and leaves. Still need to practice and learn allot more. She sure generated allot of interest in painting--and I'm all in favor of that! I paint for pleasure and don't really sell my items. Use them mostly for myself or as gifts--once in awhile someone will ask to buy a piece, and I will sell it much lower than a gift shop would. All of our local shops have pretty much gone out of business. So sad because I used to love going in them and soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying all the painted samples. Like Anj, I will probably always enjoy painting. Just love finding a pattern, cutting my wood piece and then painting it. Later I look at it and can hardly believe I actually did it! Such a good feeling. I miss all the painting magazines too--only a few good ones left. Since I like the easier patterns, I only subscribe to Painting and Quick & Easy Painting. Will sometimes buy a Tole World or other painting magazine if I see one that has projects that don't look too difficult. Scrapbooking came along and most turned their attention to that. However now some are combining both. Everyone tells me that the imports made it hard for the painters to make any profit, so allot of them gave up. I sure hope we will see a comeback--just have to wait and see. We are sure glad to have everyone join in here. It keeps me motivated when I see pics of everyone's projects. So much fun to sign in here and find messages waiting and someone with new ideas to share. Fun to be able to encourage the new painter too. Glad we all found each other. Luvs

Too bad he reminds me of a relative or maybe that's why I find Holmes attractive. There's that comfortable side to him.

Okay, I get the Mike Holmes appeal, but watching his show scares me to death! All those unfortunate souls who have been ripped off by contractors, et al.
After watching one kitchen episode, I told my DH I had a burning desire to kiss our GC's feet and beg him never, ever to leave us (because he's definitely a keeper -- though without the Holmes-appeal!)

I kinda like the Mike Holmes guy. I like to joke about what it would be like to be married to him. Can you imagine him overseeing the rest of your life? Giving insight tips on how yes, you've done a competent job on baking the chicken but that THIS would be a superior job.

LOL. He appeals in his go for it attitude and I think I'd want to kill him about 15 minutes after I met him.

Our painter was a kindly older fellow, but he really had me at "I'm in love with Benjamin Moore Aura paint. It's the best! And this pale terra cotta will be just right with the deep russet of the walls. Come see!"

Although it would be heavenly to be married to a man who "could do all that home stuff," I've decided that if I ever marry again, I'm holding out for a chef/chiropractor. And I mean not one or the other, I'm talkin BOTH!

My hubby loves that Holmes guy...not in the same way as Kate the OP though. He just loves to listen to him say stuff like "this is crap" when talking about the other contractors as he's fixing their messes. He adores that show. The quality of workmanship just makes him misty. :)

I WANT CABLE!! Norm is nice and everything but not so much to look at. And the Aussie guy with the accent. Um. No. don't want to hear that every morning and every night. Tommy. Maybe. And the carpenter one. He'd do. Then there's Johnson and Johnson. They do things I might attempt. But my heart belongs to my carpenter who made my impossible kitchen possible and did it in a month. And he makes housecalls!

we're actually making progress and i returned from our spring break "vacation" (i use the term lightly since most of you can understand that the words "break" and "vacation" mean absolutely NOTHING to a sahm) to find door jams and actual DOORS on hinges AND laundry room tile installed! i approved the samples of our hardwood floors today and we are (are you ready? sitting down?) SCHEDULED FOR CABINET INSTALL at the end of THIS month!

omg. i'm hyperventilating.
i wish one of those HGTV show hosts would show up at my door, send me away for a week (just ME) and have it all done upon my return. THAT is one sexy dream!

Woo hoo, cabinet install!!! I swear that the day that those went in I was practically jumping up and down! But then they put in the counters and I have been jittery to get in my kitchen ever since.

Hood installers come tomorrow...they are a mess and not quite reliable, so I am crossing my fingers. They are the one vendor my GC is umcomfortable with that I hired.

Keep going! I think that the cable shows actually twist our minds. They make it seem like really amazingly cute guys are going to come in and get our job done in about 2 weeks. It's the fast motion film that shows the kitchen finished in 30 minutes--I swear it's twisted my expectations!

and if that weren't bad enough, i change the channel and a REALLY hot chef from the UK picks me up in a supermarket, takes me home and cooks dinner ...and G*d only knows what else. hmmm. ...sigh.
