Why wouldn't you be able to prep to the right of the stove? It looks like there is plenty of counter space on that diagonal.

Is this a new build? When you say done deal, what do you mean? You can change? I think I woulld. I might look at the table area too, it seems a little tight. Most people like 42" aisles, I think two of yours are 36". A couple of things to look at and make sure you're cool with.

Is this what you mean? If so, it doesn't annoy me at all - I love it! I like having a single, flat door to access the cabinet, plus I can have appliances pushed back in the corner & still have plenty of space out front for prep though I do use the peninsula a lot for my chopping etc... (this was pre-backsplash!)

I can't answer whether this set-up will bug you. Only you can do that. But if you're already worried about it, then I wouldn't dismiss your concern that this kitchen plan may not work as well as you hope it will.

And I'm sorry to say but I see more to be concerned about than what you've expressed. As already noted, the table area is tight, as are your aisles, especially because your drawing does not include counter overhangs, which are generally 1.5". That means your aisles are closer to 33", not 36" and that is tight.

Can you explain more what you mean by "done deal?" Does that mean the structure and cab/appliance lay-out has to stay as is? Or do you mean the structural plan is set but that you can make some changes to the cabinet lay-out? Even if it's the former, I encourage you to make changes now, even if that means a bit more upfront cost (new drawings) and a delay. It's cheaper and easier to correct things now than it is to try to fix them once your home is built. I think you'll also enjoy your new home and kitchen more if you're not berating yourself later with "if only..."

If you can and are willing to make some relatively minor lay-out changes, let us know. I have an idea but I'd need to know where windows are located and where doorways lead. Is that a bay in the lower right corner? Does it have only windows or is there are exterior door there?

My sister-in-law has a kitchen layout similar to the area between your sink and rangetop, except that her sink is in the diagonal cupboard. It seems to work for her. I'm wondering why the back of the cupboard is also diagonal? Is it just drawn that way and will be squared off when finished, or will the wall be diagonal as well?

I agree with lisa_a: if you have doubts now, take your time to work out the plan. You have so much space in your kitchen--I'm jealous!--you should be able to make it your dream kitchen. To give you more room around the table, you could just re-orient it 90 degrees. It seems that there could be a lot of walking between the sink/rangetop area and the frig/ovens. Is it possible to swap the table area with the frig/ovens? Or move the table down towards the rounded out area so you could fit the frig in next to the current table location? Just a thought.

Looks like a beautiful kitchen space. Just make sure it is exactly what you want.

We have a similar one to the posted pictures, just with a counter rather than sink to the right of the corner. We use that prep space in the corner regularly and it works well.

How wonderful to come home to your helpful comments!! No, this is not a new build but rather a 5-foot extension to our pokey little kitchen. This is our third attempt (unforeseen circumstances,) so I have been reading this board and thinking about the plan for a lonnngggg time. My concern, which I should have better explained, is that the dirty dishes will be placed to the left of the sink before washing, in basically the same area as the prep space. I did not originally have the corner cut off as you see it, front as well as back, but it does make sense to do this so the outside of the porch is not too tunnel-like; I don't love it, but it kind of has to stay. The kitchen has 4, count 'em, 4 doorways that are also staying. The one on the left is near the entry, (thus the cut-off corner,) the one on the lower right is to the dining area, and the two on the right lead to the family room (lower) and a small "computer room," which probably used to be a laundry room since the floor is about a foot lower than the kitchen. That room would have been great to borrow space from but because of the lowered floor and lowered ceiling, was cost prohibitive. The windows are over the sink and over the table area--no bay window as the window will be too small for this to look okay and we are trying to cut costs where possible. I now see that I erased the label on the dishwasher, which will be raised to accommodate my bad back. In the 18 inches between that and the sink is a counter so that elbows won't hit the dw and a dish drainer (horrors!) will rest on top.

By "done deal," I mean that the plans have been drawn up over several months with lots of thought by both the architect and me, and a final okay from dh and me. Because of all the constraints I'm pretty sure this is the only thing that is going to work, but I just had the last-minute panic; I guess it'll be fine.

I went back and forth about the size of the eating area. It is currently 9 feet wide, but with a 2 and a half foot microvave and cart in one corner. Seven feet is far from ideal, but I think it'll be ok. I measured and thought about it over and over and really need the extra two feet on the sink run; I can always get a smaller table. That idea of turning the table 90 degrees isn't bad--thanks!

I do know the aisles are on the narrow side, but the island size is far from set in stone so I can shorten it up. I do, however, not want the aisle next to the stove to be wider, so that I can easily pivot to the prep space I'm not going to use on the island. :) I'm not close to ordering cabs yet so thanks for the reminder about the overhang inches.

Kngwd--those pictures are exactly what I was hoping for! I know the back of my diagonal will be a bit different, but it's close enough. Lovely kitchen, cabs, granite and handles, by the way! I would have preferred a wide peninsula to an island as well, but space wouldn't allow if I wanted to keep the table--I just can't give that up either.

Turning the table 90 degrees won't solve anything unless you move it away from the wall. You won't have 7' or 84" on that wall for the table. You'll have 79.5" to 81" once you include the cab for the DW (frameless, add 1.5" for cab box, framed, add 3" for cab box, exact dimensions will depend on your cab maker's specs) and the counter overhang. That leaves you with 21" to 22.5" on each side of a 36" wide table. That is beyond tight! If you turn the table 90 degrees, you'll have less than a foot of clearance. Unless you're Lilliputian in size, I don't see how that can work.

Moving it away from the wall and butting it up, lengthwise, against the island might work, although I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be in the top left seat when the DW door is opened since there will be little room between table and open DW door.

You have a large space so it seems a shame to make do with clearances as if you have a small space. If you want our help, tell us your limitations and your needs. We might see an alternative that you haven't tried yet. It doesn't hurt to ask. Doesn't cost anything either.

Did you find the directions to imbed a photo? It's really simple. Click on the "Share" button by a photo in your photobucket account. That will open up a window. Click on the "Get link code" tab, then copy the text in the box below "HTML code for websites and blogs" and paste it in the body of your post.

Have you considered dishwasher drawers, one on each side of your sink? They would be easy on your back but they wouldn't require a raised counter and the issues with banged elbows. Plus, it would move your sink farther from the angle, which means that you should gain a bit more space between your prep area and dirty dishes on the counter to the left of the sink. I think you have - or close to it - enough room on the sink wall to do this.

Something to keep in mind when you plan your island. You're not showing the depth of a range top accurately. They extend beyond the counter edge. GE range tops are 27.5" deep, Viking is 28-1/16" deep, Dacor is 28-1/8" deep, and Wolf is 28-1/2" deep (counters are generally 25-1/2" deep). Between the range top and the island counter overhang, your 36" aisle has shrunk to 31.5" to 32.5". Rhome, one of the lay-out gurus here, has 36" between island and her range top and she finds it a good pivot distance between the two. However, I can't remember if her island's drawers open towards her range top. You don't want this space so narrow that you can't open cabinets on either side of it without door collisions.

Oops, my math was wrong. That aisle will be 30" to 31" not 36" as you show.

The corner cabinet is fine. It's the other issues that aren't.

Starting with the table and it's lack of clearance. The aisle clearance also isn't enough. I'd suggest eliminating the table and carrying the cabinets all the way around the kitchen. As shown, you don't really have room for it, even with a banquette. Move the sink down more so that you have more room between the sink and range, and make the island a bit narrower, but longer. You can probably get a few stools at the end on the right, and possibly in the main aisle if you narrow up the island. I'd also add a prep sink to the island and now your prep and cleanup don't occupy the same real estate. And use your DR for everyday eating.

I happened to see your plan, which caught my eye because the shape of your kitchen somewhat resembles my former one, which I loved. I have a compulsion to put in my 2 cents about a couple of things. I apologize for not studying your concerns in greater detail and hope that I'm not creating more problems for you with what may turn out to be unwelcome suggestions.

If this plan is not etched in stone, would you consider placing the cooktop in the island such that you'd be cooking with your back to the sink? (I'd move the island more south (away from the sink) and east (toward the right side of your drawing). I'd also move the fridge to the approximate location where you have the rangetop drawn. This way, while you're cooking at the island, you simply turn around to reach the sink, and the fridge is just a few steps to the side. Removing the fridge from its current drawn location takes it out of the traffic pattern through the kitchen. Also, a standard depth fridge there will make the corridor more narrow. I think a built-in or freestanding china hutch between the stack ovens and pantry would be a nice use of this former fridge space.

I think someone mentioned a corner sink. I would definitely stay away from one unless you're the only one who works in the kitchen. When someone is standing at a corner sink, they're essentially wedged in, and it's difficult for anyone else to get near the sink or the angled drawers or cabinets next to it. Happens everytime DH "helps" me by washing dishes as I prep.

Lisa a--plain and simple, I don't want to give up my kitchen table. I don't need room for people to walk around the table, just to slip into a seat. The current 9 feet is more than enough but perhaps I will have to go down to 8 feet, rather than 7. I tell you, since I started years ago working on this plan, this wall has always been the sticking point! In regards to the 90 degree turn, I'm wondering if it would work to butt the end of the table up against the right-hand wall, leaving enough room for people to walk around the other side to sit at two chairs on the window side, and two chairs on the open side. (I'm too tired to draw it out tonight but will try to do so tomorrow and maybe even post it in text.) I very much appreciate your reminders about clearances. Yes, I've thought of dw drawers but am not keen on them, not to mention my garbage can would have no home. As it is right now, my can gets kicked around the kitchen and is always in the way of something. I realize most people don't like the look of a raised dw very much, but I think I'm going to do it. I see the rangetop will be 27 and 1/4 inches deep--hadn't gotten around to checking that demension yet. The island will just have to keep shrinking...I haven't made enough progress to figure out drawer placements yet but I will remember not to have them open on a tight side. (Right now my sxs fridge opens into the doorway, completely blocking the way. People in the 50's and 60's used much smaller ones!)

Green Designs--Yes, we considered continuing the cabs all the way down the wall but as I said before, I just can't give up a kitchen table. I'm just not an island and stool kind of gal.

Kai--You are so thoughtful! I happily take any and all suggestions, believe me. I'm not able to put the cooktop on the island because we cook Indian food and it's very messy, with mustard seeds popping in the hot oil and going all over the place. This is also the reason we never considered making the kitchen more open. It's true that the fridge isn't in an ideal spot, but I couldn't find a home for it anywhere else.

Thank you all for hanging in there with me. I'm settling the panicky feeling today, and thinking that maybe I will just learn to chop on the island, tiny though it may end up being!

There is no point in spending all of the money to remodel your kitchen only to end up with it unusable. 24" is NOT enough room for a chair, much less to pull one in and out to get into it. Even airlines give you more room and you know how awfully tight that seating is! You need a minimum of 48" of clearance from the table edge to the nearest obstacle for actual people to get in and out of the seats. This is a MAJOR FAIL in the plan.

If your musts include having an eat in kitchen then your expansion simply MUST be larger so that you will have room to include a table.

sjerin, you seem to have misunderstood me. I'm not advocating for you to get rid of your table. I never wrote, "get rid of your table." (I'm not an island and stool kind of gal, either. I'd hate to give up my kitchen table, too.)

I am, however, cautioning you that your clearances are tight. It's one thing to get by a chair pushed in, it's another to try to move behind an occupied chair. We have 28" between the table and the back of our couch - less than NKBA recommends (36" for squeeze behind space, 44" for walk behind space). But this isn't in an aisle and there's only one person who needs to get in and out of that seat - my hubby. When he's seated, it's very difficult to move past him. I've joked that the only way I can move past him is to get up on my tippy toes and scootch my butt up over the back of the couch. And I'm not a big person. There's no way I could do that if there was a wall on that side.

I did suggest that you move the table to the center of the room as an extension of the island. Like this:

The other option is to create an L banquette bench along the top and right side walls of your space. A generously cushioned (seat and back with a sloped back, easy on the back) bench at 24" deep with the table overhanging the bench by 4" would gain you 4" of clearance to use on the non-bench side. If you reduced the bench depth to 22", you'd gain 6" of clearance between table and counter. Even so, you'd still be on the lean side since you haven't allowed for room along that wall for the cabinet to house your raised DW and for the counter overhang.

The only reason I suggested DW drawers is because you mentioned a concern about banged elbows with a raised DW and because it was a way to get you a bit more space between dirty dishes and prep area.

And you're right, fridges keep getting bigger and bigger. I was shocked when we replaced our 19 year old fridge a couple years ago.

Lisa, the island comment was directed at Greendesigns, not you. I wish I loved island seating because I think it would be easier to fit in, but I just don't, probably because of my bad back.

Fwiw, this table are is only a small niche, only for table and chairs. There is no walking around it necessary as the table butts up against the window. I couldn't even properly call it a breakfast nook, just a very small eating area. I took some pictures of it as it is now, but am having trouble getting them on to photobucket--I've done it before, but am missing something. Will have to wait for the husband to get home, sad to say. In my situation, 24 inches IS enough to get in and out of a chair, as that's what we do now on one side. I did consider moving the table to the center of the room and that is what the architect wanted to do. But I think it would bug me as we're not perfectly neat people and I'm sure chairs would not be shoved in all the way; I'd rather have the eating area on one side. That's a beautiful kitchen you posted, and huge! I'm also not a fan of banquettes. I do appreciate your comments; I just have so many likes, dislikes and personal constraints that I want to follow since I'd better love this kitchen in the end.

I'm revisiting the idea of having the raised dw right up at the sink as I found a couple of pictures and comments showing this and stating that it works fine. Thanks again for the suggestions, Lisa and Hollysprings.

Two final thoughts. Not sure if the dimensions will work, but would built-in banquettes on the north and east walls help your table seating issue?

Also, to address your main question, I think the diagonal corner will be fine. It looks like your plan shows a larger sink corner base cabinet (rather than the smaller, standard one). There are two in my U-shaped kitchen. I'm very annoyed that the sink is located in one and the cooktop in the other; otherwise, I think they provide easy and economical access to corner base cabinet storage. There's a large, double-shelved lazy Susan in the one below the cooktop. With double doors, the opening width is some 21+", good for accessing large pots. When thinking about remodeling, I can envision large corner cabinets again for food prep--they would be nice, large work surfaces. One caveat is that it's a long reach into the corners for cleaning. I'd suggest an appliance garage there. I think that it might also be a difficult reach into upper cabinets above one of these large sink base corner cabinets. That's probably why the walls, against which my upper cabinets were mounted, were built out from the corners.

I might have considered a banquette if my kids were much younger, but they are mostly out of the house now. I was over at my neighbor's yesterday and measured the width of his table area: 8 feet. So I think I'll keep it at 8. Still dithering about the counter between the sink and dw. It's so nice to hear what you think about counters and cabinets on the diagonal. I WISH I had a u-shaped kitchen, as I think that is the most efficient!
