Spiral Ham

I bought one of these hams for Easter, they are pre-cut. I found them to be very dry, or maybe I just over cooked it. I think with it being pre-cut it cooks too fast.

Those hams are already cooked, all you want to do is heat it up. Maybe you cooked it way too much?

Absolutely - do NOT cook it. Barely heat it or you will be very disappointed in how dry it is.

We went to the TJ's in Louisville yesterday. They still have a full display case of the uncured hams. Since I now know they don't always stock them, we bought two to freeze. You might want to call your local TJ to see if they still have them. They really are delicious. Sandra

I would put the ham in at 180 degrees,,,,,and get the ham out of the refrig as soon as you pop your head off the pillow in the morning! As for the greenbeans...unless they are very young, they sometimes get hard steaming. I would boil them for about 4 to 5 minutes.....then drain. I would use my pasta pot because you are going to need about 3 pounds of green beans. Then while they are cooking, and the ham is resting and you are dressing the salad and making coffee and pouring drinks and....and...melt some butter in a big fry pan....about 1/4 pound with about 3 or 4 oz slivered almonds, and after draining the greenbeans toss them in the frypan over low heat with the butter and almonds....You can keep them hot that way. I wouldn't attempt to keep the mac and cheese hot...it will absorb a LOT of the sauce....it will absorb a lot even in the refrig over night so make it extra saucy. Linda C

Yes, the Costco ham is salty. All cured ham is salty. Different processes are used for different 'cures'. (many methods) (-I appear to be invisible. I posted above how to desalt a ham.) Some are lest sensitive to the salt, some love it. The sugar coating mixes balance the salt making it appear less salty but that does not remove it, just masks it. Directions will be on your package of spiral ham. From a company in Quebec(lafleur) that has been in the ham business for over a 100yrs has this on their web page... "Before cooking Since ham is often salty, it's best to desalt it before cooking or, for cooked ham, before eating. Desalting ham In a large saucepan, cover the ham with water. Bring to a boil. Let stand for 20 minutes, then drain. If the ham is very salty, repeat the process." -another recommended method, if your ham came out to salty, especially for left-over slices for breakfast, is to put slices in a zip-lock with with some milk and soak a few hours or over-night. Milk will draw out some of the salts. (-i use that method for desalting the final rinse of salt fish.) The Cooks bone-in sounds delish and bone-in is preferred in our home. Less likely to dry out. DH loves it but tends to over-eat so we do a leg of lamb. His choice.

First read the directions that come with the ham. These hams can be wet cured or dry cured and the directions that come with the ham are specific to it. Most often you put the cut side down and wrap tightly with foil. Some of the hams come in foil packaging that you can re-heat them in. The hams are delicious served as they are and cold. However if you are having a sit down dinner and have prepared other hot side dishes - just follow the directions that come with the ham.

The Honey Baked Ham we bought says not to heat it at all. And that is why--it will dry out. So I am going back to the whole, bone-in ham.

We discussed spiral hams at our Easter dinner and by cutting the ham the juices drain out. My Sister said if you bake a bone in ham you need to let it sit awhile before you slice it, so the juices are set in. they had all tried a spiral ham and said they were to dry.

I never liked them. Bought a Honeybaked Ham once and threw it out. Not because of the dryness but the taste.

Baking and carving a ham is so easy. Sauces can be done on the side for those who want them.
I just want thin sliced ham on my plate with a side of HOT freshly made mustard.

I don't care for them either. Slow baked, bone in, ham here with hot chinese mustard on the side.

I like the regular hams, but the spiral is good if you are having a party (I could never slice it thin like that). Mine didn't dry out. I heated it (at 200 I think) in a bag and then uncovered it for only the last 15 minutes or so.

My Spiral never turns out dry. I heat mine in my large Presto Oven with the lid on. Doesn't take long either.

I've had several spiral hams from Honey Baked Ham company. Wrap in foil and put the oven on low, under 250, and they come out very nice. Never dry.

Every time I do a spiral cut I wrap it in foil. Dry ones are always just put in a pan in the oven. With all the surface area open, of course it's going to dry out.
