I remember seriously considering Ultracraft before we decided on IKEA. The Ultracraft (Dynasty, Destiny or something like that, it was 4 years ago) was to be $17k for cabs alone and we could have had IKEA Abstrakt for approx $7,500, fully assembled and installed or Applad for under $7k also fully assembled and installed. We almost went with the Abstrakt, but did not like that there was a seam along each door edge. The Applad had less sharp edges and did not have the visible seam, so, at a lower price, it was an easy decision, lol. When we saw them in person, we never went back to UC. I do remember liking Ultracraft more than the other similar cab lines and had researched their quality and price. If one does not get IKEA cabs, they are the next on the list IMHO.

We had gotten quotes for Ultracraft from a local kitchen place (one that does high volume) and from HD & Lowes. All were in the $17k range for cabs alone. I got quotes from other places for Ultracraft (and similar cabs), and one high end place had them for $35k, uninstalled. We wanted slab front white cabs with almost all drawers and with soft close features. We also wanted tall pantry pullouts for 2 cabs and a 3rd which ended up with a wall oven, but originally had another tall pullout planned. We do not have any corner cabs in our plan because I wanted to design without them. We have a total of 18 cabs in our kitchen.

If you like the Miton and the price is right, what's the problem with the three-month wait? Use that time to do whatever else needs to be done in your kitchen, and to live your life.

BTW, have you posted your layout? Since you're getting new cabs and spending a chunk of change, it couldn't hurt to see whether anyone suggests any brilliant ideas.

look at this blog. I came across it the other day. Scroll down to their kitchen pictures.. They used Amaro line from Pacific Crest, which is a modestly priced semi custom cabinets. I looked at the line. I have seen the cabinets installed in another modern home. I thought they looked pretty good. I have never seen matte-white installed, however.

In modern kitchens, I prefer the metal drawer look that you get with Blum Tandembox or Ikea Blum Metabox equivalent over typical American wood drawer boxes. They (Tandembox) are usually a significant upgrade for cabinet companies because they don't do them often.

I have Ultracraft in a maple slab door. They are 3 years old now, but still look great. No dings or dents, and the drawers still slide & close perfectly. I would buy them again.

Take a look at Neff from Canada and Alno from Germany. Both companies are fabulous. But, I do think they may be on the upper end of the scale.

archnista - why don't you get a few quotes from local cabinet makers? What you are looking for isn't that complex, they just have to have experience applying the paint properly - ask for examples of other similar work they have done. They may also outsource the painting, which is fine. I have white matte slab doors, was no problem for my cabinet maker. High gloss would have been possible too. Custom cabinets will be more expensive than IKEA (and better quality probably), but I bet you can get the amount you need in your price range. No harm in asking.

I had a person from here ask me about where to find innexpensive high quality cabinets a few weeks ago. I told her bridgewood was what she should do. She sent me her list of cabinets and I could have done her kitchen for $14,000. She said starmark was $25,000. Post your needed sizes on this and I will post a quote here for it in full overlay frameless cabines all plywood construction, dovetail drawers, soft close on the doors and drawers, the cabinets will be slab doors with edgebanding in black or white. You can even spec your exact color from Benjamin Moore. I bet I can do your list for your budget or lesss any where in the country. 4 weeks plus shipping for the lead time.

What about Wellmann (a divisiion of Alno I think) or Impuls. I think a few of the Canadian companies do this look but I'm not sure which ones do it best.

I don't think 3 months is a long wait for cabinets you love. I waited just over 2 months for Crystal Cabinet to make mine, so yours are somewhat speedy considering the country of origin! Weigh out how many years you will love them, against how long they take to arrive.

Have have you looked at St. Charles cabinetry? I think they have a great modern look and beautiful colors to pick from.

If you have a Holiday dealer in your area, you have to check out their Cucina di Festa series. They offer high gloss as well as some crazy solid surface doors with renewable surfaces. They also have VERY inexpensive laminate slab cabinets that are extremely affordable.

They have the following type doorstyles:
Rigid Thermofoil
Parapan (very high end!!!)
Laminates
Acrilux (very shimmery...pearlescent finish in high gloss...available in many colors).

Depending on what market your in, don't be surprised in the dealer in your area is not that familiar with this line. I carry the line and have yet to sell one. I have quoted it out once for a friend that likes ultra modern, but he hasn't bought yet.

Henrybuilt is another option; apparently they launched a less expensive line in 2009.

I just dont want to wait for 3 months for just the cabinets. I am moving out of state in late June and this will be my secondary home, so I'd like for the renovation to be near complete. I figured I could find something compariable but at a less lead time.

Henrybuilt Viola Park is not as cheap as you think they are. You can actually go on their web site and do the estimate using their software. It did not save me that much. I ended up getting Henrybuilt. They are BOTH made to order and are about 12 weeks lead time.

Any cabinets that are made to order will take 8 to 12 weeks.

3 months from Italy doesn't sound bad to me

Ultracraft Destiny or Vision will fit the bill perfectly.It will be expensive if you try going out to a local dealer. I have a UltraCraft dealership and export to Asia. Are you kidding me? I want modern high gloss doors too, but ALL of these cabinets are CRAP!!! They are all particleboard and MDF! No offense, but that is EXACTLY what Ikea is! At least Ikea prices it's cabinets at a rate that matches the lifetime they will last: 5-7 years.

I LOVE St. Charles, but I imagine they cost well over $50,000. Anyone know for sure?

I really want vintage metal cabs, but they just do not fit my kitchen. That's why I'm trying to go Mid-Mod in WOOD - NOT PARTICLEBOARD!

The Ultracraft cost $17,000 a few years ago? Ikea costs $7,000 today for the same thing. Granted, their sizes suck (none of the turquoise glass doors I want fit my kitchen).

For $17,000 you can buy wood cabinets from PA and order custom high-gloss doors from another company and still probably have the carcasses custom painted. After seeing these prices for particleboard, those plywood cabinets are actually looking like a bargain (though NOTHING compares to the solid wood cabs in my original kitchen).

And all this "Green" marketing is B.S.! Particle board and MDF do not last - MDF disintegrates in water! Wood lasts. Having to dump and replace your kitchen every few years is as far from "green" as you can get! Nevermind all the toxic resins and glues used to make particleboard and MDF.

FYI: If you truly want to go modern and are willing to pay $2,000 a cabinet (what these "lower end" ones average), then do yourself a favor and go with solid stainless steel - they'll last forever. It's mostly custom (outdoor kitchens), but many offer interior options with colorful non-stainless doors.
St. Charles is powdercoated steel (you cannot paint / powdercoat stainless).

Personally, because I know the costs of the raw materials and I can build, do everything myself, I know that ALL cabinets are a major rip-off - the cheap ones are CRAP and not worth the money / time to install something that won't last, and the high-end ones have exhorbitant markups (mostly sales/ design, less actual manufacturing) built-in that is well into the hundreds per hour. The only reason I don't want to build my own cabinets is because I don't have a dedicated woodshop and I've never worked with Blum glides (very technical) and I actually want my cabinets to function and last at least 50 years. Therefore I am looking into having my bases truly CUSTOM (to my exact specs) built and I'll probably build the uppers myself.

For example, I need a custom 14-15" deep base 4-drawer cab for my dishes that is 24" wide and 39" high with 12" Blum Blumotion undermount full-extension soft-close glides, solid 3/4" maple dovetailed drawer sides, 1/2" plywood drawer bottoms. The 4 drawer boxes ((3)-8"hx21"wx12"d", (1)-3"hx21"wx12"d) should cost no more than $230-300 (that's high - I'm trying to find a boxmaker willing to do dovetails and the 1/2" bottoms).
3 solid maple (not plywood) 10" x 24" slab drawer fronts should cost about $60, and one 5" x 24" maple slab front should cost about $15.
Then I need the cabinet made - I want 3/4" plywood sides and solid face frames - the material alone should cost no more than $100-150 (prices keep going up every time I check). That would be $405-525 materials cost - that includes the labor to make the drawer boxes with attached glides and thedrawer fronts. To that I'd add $200 for the labor to build the simple cabinet carcass and install the pre-made drawers and pre-made drawer fronts. That would be $100 per hour. (A real cabinet maker can make a 15"x24"x39" cabinet in an hour easily, then installing / aligning the drawers should take another hour. If it takes longer than that for a professional, they are a joke (read woodweb - many of them do face-frames in 10 minutes). Total MAX for a top-of-the-line ALL WOOD cabinet like this should be no more than $625-750.

Then paint and hardware - that I'll do myself - .75 Liters of Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant high gloss $30 and primer $35. Plus sandpaper / brushes (have those) = $75. 4 Mid-Mod knobs ~ $40.

All-in-all, the cabinet should come in well less than $1,000. Heck, at that rate, based on savings compared to the cabinets listed here, I can buy a good paint sprayer.

Even if this was a full-depth 24" cabinet it would only cost about $150 more in materials (longer glides, longer cab sides and deeper drawer boxes - all other dimensions would be the same). It actually costs a lot more per square foot to build a small cabinet like I need, but I have no choice.
