I never wore them but I loved the hairstyles of the '40's. I was a little girl then. My Mother wore a poodle cut when I was still home. I had my first perm when I was one year old! My aunt owned a beauty shop.

I hated the poodle cut. Hated it, hated it, hated it!! That's because when I was sent to convent school after my mom died (I was nine), the nuns cut off my hair and gave me a perm. I still cringe at the thought.

I do, however, have fond feelings for this one (shown 13 years later). I would wear it again if I weren't so old.

Alisande, is that a picture of you? Or is it a picture of a model with the haircut you like? You are absolutely beautiful, your eyes are so pretty. Isn't the flip comming back in? I see alot of teenagers wearing a modern version of the flip and I think it is so becoming.

My favorite hairstyle is the gypsy, or shag.

My favorite style was Farah Fawcett's look. Unfortunately, my hair just didn't have the "character" to achieve it. My DDIL had the hair for it, and wore it with great panache.

Dorothy Hamill's "wedge" worked well, and was flattering, until no cheap (emphasize CHEAP) haircutters around here remembered how to do it. No, I don't go to "stylists."

Anyone here remember "the page boy" and since I graduated high school in the late 60's....I loved the "bell"...It was kinda like a page boy with ends turned under but rollers were also placed sideways from the center of your head in the back....to the front leaving it poofy and slightly turned sideways when brushed....

I agree, the flip is pretty classic. Not like the "big hair" of the 1980s, for instance.

I wore my hair long and straight for a long time. I also pulled it up in a french twist and wore it in a way that I just pulled up the top and sides and wrapped them around my hand to make sort of a loose bun. I liked long hair...was easy to take care of. Sometimes wish I had never cut it and could wear long braids now. I wore braids when I was a kid...didn't cut my hair until I was almost 14.

Alisande, I, too, think you are very beautiful, and I have seen various pictures of you that you have posted over time. You remain beautiful - not "too old" - for any style that you would like to wear.

How many of you remember the actress Joey Heatherton? She had a really sexy ,short,somewhat shag style hairdo. I loved that" do " Yes the french twist..that was my hairstyle of choice when I married.

I remember Joey Heatherton. So cute! I'd actually like that haircut now. Sort of. Well, maybe not exactly. But with her face, she could pull anything off.

I had the horrible home perms as a child, a pixie, the bubble and the flip before finally going long and straight. In my 30's I went temporarily insane and went short. Fought my hair every single day. Somehow regained my sanity, found a hairdresser who knows what "just a trim" means and went back to long and straight. AHHH freedom. Real wash and wear at last. I will never go back. Unless it falls out I will have long hair when I'm 90.

My favorite was the heavily feathered style...can't remember if it was right before or right after "the Farrah"!

I do remember Joey Heatherton and thought she was so pretty! She had on a summer TV series with her Dad at one time. And I remember she was once married to a football player (back in the 60s?) who was involved in a big scandal, and they divorced. I don't remember details, I was just a kid.
I've often wondered whatever happened to Joey. Is she still alive? About 10 years ago, the tabloids ran pictures of her, and she was shockingly thin and anorexic.

My hair rarely will take a perm. Three times in my life has one lasted more than a week. I have thick, fine hair and the haircuts that worked best for me were the shag and the Farrah cut, which was almost just a longer version of the shag.

My first "style" was the Florence Henderson "Shag".

Loved the Farrah style but didn't have the fullness she had.

I always loved the French Twist too. It looked so elegant. But by the time my hair got long enough, it was out of style. My Mom always kept my hair short throughout childhood. I guess with my type of frizzy curly hair it was easier to deal with. My sister had long straight hair though and how I envied her. She use to get perms and I had mine straightened. LOL

I've always had thick hair, so you can imagine what I looked like at ten after my mother gave me a Toni Home Permanent. (Think 'bush'.)

I wore a French twist with soft waves over the ears until I was a mother; it was too time-consuming to rat and put up. I really liked the Hammill wedge. Right now I'm searching for a style that's better than what I have: all-one-length, chin-length, blown dry and turned under. It's too flat on top for one thing!

IMO Joey H. doesn't hold a candle to our own alisande!

The pageboy and the french twist,and who could forget the Ponytail?? So quick and easy.

I liked the Shag, especially the way Jane Fonda looked in Klute. Also liked the two 60's classic looks-the flip and page boy, both looked great on longish hair. Now I'm too old to wear those styles, I mostly wear my hair about shoulder length, with bangs, layered, and tapered around my face. My hair is light brown, fine and thin.

My favorite is still the Farra Fawcett long shag

I had a Dorothy Hammill wedge for a while. I shampooed and blow-dried my hair every morning. It took about 45 minutes. Not for me. Now I'm a wash-and-go-gal.

My first real hair cut was the Dorothy Hammill. I liked it but I started getting mistaken for a boy! I would try it again though if it came back in style (I definitely would not be mistaken for a boy now - a man in drag maybe but not a boy.)

I remember in the 70s I wanted a perm like my older sisters and others who had long loose curls and I came out looking exactly like Little Orphan Annie. Thank God I have no pictures of it.

I remember the beehive, Linda. I also remember having one done at a salon for a semi-formal......and I remember the urban legend (although we didn't call them that in those days) about spiders breeding in the beehive hairdo. That story tended to make one's scalp itch. :-)

I had the 'joey Heatherton" shag then, it worked great for me, and I still have it! Probably will have it when I go into assisted living. LOL~ seriously!

A french twist is not in the past. I still do it and get lots of compliments! (Go back and see photo of me & my daughter) I have long french twist comb that I use. I have worn my hair up most of my adult life. I also wear hairpieces since I have "cat hair" (fine fine fine).

Yes, I remember the Breck Girls. I also remember the Miss Rheingold. Do you have to be from New York to remember that annual beauty contest? It was BIG. One writer said, "To call the Miss Rheingold contest huge was like saying Mother Theresa was thoughtful." LOL

Minnie Lucy On I Love Lucy would be a classic example of the 50's poodle cut.

In the 80's the poodle cut was longer,fuller and and framed the face with tightly permed hair.

That's not how I remember the poodle cut. Mine was much shorter than Lucille Ball's hairdo, although I can see why hers was named after a poodle. Maybe the nuns didn't do mine right.

I believe the 'poodle' you are describing went on to become known as the 'low fro' in the 70s-80's.

I have never had a perm or colored my hair. As a child I had pigtails and I wore them on my daughter. I still think that's a cute look. In HS I had a very long and high pony tail and then got a pixie. I had the Mia Farrow really short cut and for a brief time ,the shag. But I went with a blunt cut after that and for decades I have kept that style. It used to be real long and gradually got shorter but it's still longer in front than the back..the classic bob. But with humidity I have corkscrew curls which I hate so I have to blow dry. I have not been to a beauty shop in 30 years.
