Decorating a plastic storage bin

I need help and FAST! I need to make a waterproof keepsake box for DD and I am not all that crafty, but am thinking my best bet would be to somehow attach fabric to the exterior (and possibly the inside also) of a plastic storage bin. Has anyone out there ever done this? I need sugestions on how to go about doing this or if anyone has any better ideas I would so apprecaiate. My DD lost her 1wk old baby girl 2 mos. ago and wants to have a big enough tote to keep certain items and important papers in. I'd like to give this to her for Mother's Day ... Thanks in advance ... Oh, how sad but what a great idea! I am sorry. We lost an 11 month old nephew and I know how hard it is for a family to take. It must be waterproof? Does she live in water? I vote for an acid free keepsake box or something that may fit inside a plain waterproof box.

I haven't used the bins that you mention, but I imagine that they would work fine. I use milk crates. I've had great luck with covering the tuber in sulfur and placing them in plastic grocery bags that are loosely sealed. (This method is described at length on the forum.) Peat is not longer recommended as it tends to dry the tubers.

My large worm bin is a commercial one given by the city at their workshop, and it has 2 air holes at either end. That's it, no other holes. The lid snaps closed, tight. My other bins are buckets that the likes of Dairy Queen, Williams Coffee Pub throw out, that muffin mix, whipped cream etc come in. No holes in them at all, so the lids are ajar or completely off. I haven't had any escapees or crawling on the sides, maybe a couple or so worms exploring once in a while. Having said that, I worry if people new to worming, keep their lids off to force them into their bedding. If there are a large number of worms escaping or trying to escape, there's something wrong, and they're not happy. Forcing them into undesirable conditions isn't fair. "which I've done to have the light keep them at bay despite bin conditions" That sounds mean to me.

I have two small clear (plastic) bins for some of my worms. (Clear was not my first choice -- it was all I could find when I needed to start new bins). I keep both bins in the kitchen, on top of the refrigerator. Sometimes, when I add new food to the bins, some of the food is up against the side of the plastic, and I can easily see it through the bins. It's cool, because I can easily see when that food is gone. Contrary to what I expected, using clear bins hasn't been a problem, and the worms are doing very well. They are fat, healthy, and I assume happy. I seldom see them through the clear plastic, because they are in the middle of the bin. I do sometimes see them on or at the sides of the bin when I turn the lights on in the kitchen, but they move further into the bin fairly quickly. I have noticed a LOT of worm trails in the slight condensation that forms on the sides of the bin--evidence that they do come to the sides at night when it's dark--but I haven't had any escapees. So to answer your question, I think the worms are smart enough to stay away from the edges of a clear bin, and it's been my (rather surprising) experience that the clear bins are not a problem.

"I prefer Rubbermaid also, but Sterelite seems to be the only option these days." I agree with this. I have more Sterelite ones and they're in the attic. Some have the snap over sides and some have regular lids. I had one regular lid crack along the side/top. Consider buying the snap ones if possible. Kswl - I thought my attic looked decent until I saw that. :) That's awesome!

Golddust ... From what my DD described what she would like, the idea of a decorative plastic storage tote really makes the most sense as it should be pretty protective and should prevent anything from getting damaged in normal storage ...
Jejvtr ... Thank you for those sites. I had all ready checked out the first one but I like that the second one actually has pictures. I just hope the top will still fit on it after adding the fabric ... Wish me luck !

linda, I'm so sorry for your loss; that has to be one of the most terrible things that can happen.

As for your project, maybe a bin that would fit in a wicker lidded basket or in a small decorative chest could be one solution .

Mitchdesg ... Thank you for your idea .. I am definitely going to consider this. I plan to get out looking sometime this week .. Wicker on the outside and fabric on the inside .. This is sounding like I just might be able to pull this off :o)
I'm so glad I thought to post here .. You gals really have some great ideas and I so appreciate them all .. Will let you know how I make out ... thanks again!

I have a pattern for making a fabric cover for a plastic tote. Unfortunately, I think it's gone out of print, but there are patterns out there.

Xantippe ... That is exactly what I was considering! I never gave a thought to McCall's or Simplicity .. it's been too long since I've sewn anything ... Thank you for the idea ...PS .. Those patterns sure have gone up a bit in price ... LOL!!
