Grits Pie

3/4 cup water

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup quick-cooking grits

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

3/4 cups sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

3 large eggs, slightly beaten

1/4 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 (9-inch) frozen pie shell, thawed

Sweetened whipped cream and strawberries, optional

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

In a small saucepan, bring the water and salt to a boil. Add the grits and cook for 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the butter and cook for 1 additional minute. Set aside and cool slightly.

In a small bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Slowly stir into the cooled grits. Pour into the pie shell and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until set. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream and strawberries as a garnish, if desired.

I used to love sugar and butter on my grits as a child. Think this will be delicious!

Well it looks good and the recipe sounds good, but I've never had sugar on grits before. Are you going to make it? If you do and like it, then I'll try it :-)

Beez, I seriously love everything. I am sure I will like grits, the list of things I won't eat is pretty limited (unfortunately!). They are after all, another butter delivery mechanism! I may have to plan a trip to visit you and the mill someday. How funny the potter is from Maine. I don't recognize the signature on the bottom but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. It is a beautifully made piece. The towel/mitt set is like sunshine in the kitchen -- so welcome after last week when we got nearly 30" of snow! Funny you should mention the Thai/Asian thread. last night I had difficulty reaching escape velocity at the office, so the hubs met me for dinner at our favorite Thai place and we enjoyed the Kao Soi noodle bowl I wrote about. It reinforced my need to be able to make that dish at home, it is so delicious. Thanks again, Beez! That package really made my day.

How can I stop grit from shooting out of my flue pipe?

Has anyone inspected the chimney ? Muffler tape will work but the thing is it was never intended to wrap furnace pipes because furnace pipes do not normally spill out grit. Are your flue pipes galvanized ? If kept up a 20 year old furnace is not old. They actually made a good furnace in those days. i wouldn't blame the furnace just yet. there might be something else causing this. I've seen one insident that is very rare might not be your problem but i was with my journeyman on a call. White grit was on the flue pipes. took us 8 months to figure it out. The basement was very damp. Very hard ground water in the area. As the moist air condensed on the flue pipes it left behind the calcium from the water. The flue pipe turned white. you don't say where the furnuce is located. If the grit collects underneath i'd think, Moisture ? It's a stab in the dark. See what your oil guy says. Oh yah. You might not want to do this but taste it. Is it chalky ? If it is chalky it's calcium. Actually if you can write your name in it it is calcium. As i said before see what your oil guy says. After all he is the one you are paying.

Paula Deen prepared it today :o) It was a rerun, but I've never seen it.

And when I did a search, there were other recipe sites, but the recipe was basically the same.

It's on my to try list.

I've always liked grits put into a loaf pan chilled and sliced then fried in butter like French toast.

wildchild, Paula Deen makes a grits toast that looks and sounds wonderful. She serves it topped with shrimp, etc.

Type in a search, if interested, for shrimp and grits toast and it will come up. Or just grits toast.

I love grits and I eat it with sugar sprinkles sometimes. I make a cheese grits soufflÃ¯Â¿Â½ that is a beautiful dish and taste wonderful. I know I would like that pie.

And man oh man I love me some shrimp and grits.

Im gonna try it. Hubby is from the south....im not but i eat grits. Love them with butter n brown sugar so i bet ill love this pie. Im on vaca now though...hope i can find this post when i get home.

Well, here's the spoil sport.

I grew up eating grits with salt, pepper and butter, or with sausage, or fried eggs, or like WC said, but never with sugar.

That would be like putting sugar in cornbread. :Sue

I grew up eating grits and rice with sugar and butter.

Now I don't eat regular rice.

I eat my grits with no butter, and with only salt and pepper.

I like my grits with sugar and butter but DH likes his with salt and pepper.

That looks like a typical Chess type pie with grits added.

funny you shoudl post this...have grits sitting on counter from this am breakfast. had them with brown sugar a pat of butter...
